Playa La Majahua - for John

Back in the 70's and 80's Playa La Majahua was where young folks and hippies hung out.

Then in the early 1990's when Carlos Salinas de Gortari was President of Mexico his brother Guillermo set up a real estate development business and acquired the land in the small valley and beach of La Majahua, a place that I believe should've been preserved as a natural park because it was home to wildlife including deer and jaguar and parrots. But invading humans have obliterated much of the animal population. Guillermo Salinas de Gortari went to jail for corruption, and the development never happened though there are a few model homes there. When he was eventually released from jail not that many years ago I believe the land was still in his name, but I seem to recall reading somewhere that he sold his interest in the development. Not sure who owns it now. You can probably Google the details if you're interested. I continue believing it should be part of a natural preserve like El Limón even though we've killed most of the wildlife.

Beautiful pictures Rob. The area definitely has a natural beauty hiding beneath the scars of garbage and abandoned construction. I agree with you that it would be a beautiful gem in Zihuatanejo's crown if it could be connected with El Limon into a natural preserve.

Thanks for the historical information Rob, Majahua is hands down the nice beach/environment in the Zihua Ixtapa area. Creating a park there or at least really encouraging saving decent public access there, not like Ixtapa, would be a worthy goal. Too bad a fund raiser over time like Sailfest could not purchase and hold the property as a public park.

went there... great beach

would love to know more about the history of the whole area from the fishing villages through to the 70,80,90s ... to now.
