Grocery Bags!
Initially it was just a threat, but as of October 1, both Mega Soriana and Bodega Aurerra no longer provide plastic bags!!!!
What a wonderful move. We think it's a statewide move, and hope so.
When it was first announced, we gathered up all of our cloth shopping bags, and we made a Modatella run for fabric, and made 10 mesh bags (blue tulle, they are gorgeous) of varying sizes to put our produce in. It was a quick, easy, fun project.
We do the majority of our shopping in town, in places other than the "grocery stores" and are finding that many of those markets no longer provide plastic bags either. WONDERFUL!!!
This meant largely as a note to our tourists who will be joining us this winter. Either bring your own bags, or purchase the nice ones from either supermarket for just 10p.
Don't be upset that you have to buy bags, reuse them and help keep Zihuatanejo beautiful!

For those who dont live here.....
There are many BEAUTIFUL shopping bags for purchase in Z. They make great gifts when you head back home.
Grocery Bags!
Wonderful, wonderful news. Now if the US could just get 1/10 as smart!!
Grocery Bags!
That USA place is so stupid. Wonder why so many people are trying to sneak across the border and live there,

We’re in Santiago de Queretaro right now. Plastic bags are few and far between around here, but still in use in the mercado, some panaderias and for other food products. But no big bags to hold several purchases. Thank goodness!
We were recently impressed with how well Zihua and Troncones are doing with straws. We were served drinks with bamboo straws, straws make of avacado pits and others. Today in Queretaro, we got twigs as stir sticks in our jamaica!
By the way, there are a lot of fabulous restaurants here. Not necessarily expensive but definitely top notch, often gourmet.
See you all in January!
Grocery Bags!
Great news!
¡Viva Zihua!
¡Viva México!

Available at Café Caracol on the corner of our home.
These have been our shopping bags forever. They make good beach bags, too.

Our dogs even have a small one for the beach that carries their balls, water and of course, clean up bags!
Grocery Bags!
The bags that are sold at both supermarkets are a nylon/plastic that lasts a long time.
We use cloth bags for food items because we can throw them in the laundry.

1. Economic opportunity.
2. Extreme violence in their own community.
We do a lot of things very well, but we're uncommonly dumb in other ways. And too many of us are too arrogant and short-sighted to learn from others who may have a better idea.

Will this affect the baggers at the markets?
Or will you just hand them your own bags?
Grocery Bags!
We put our bags on the belt first, in front of our items and the cashier hands them to the baggers.
Remember to always tip the baggers!!
Grocery Bags!
The city of Portland, Oregon has had a no plastic bags law for several years. Bring your own or 'buy' a paper bag
