We're long-termers and, after arriving in mid-November, have noticed there are more mosquitoes than ever before and have seen no evidence of any spraying. Anyone else noticed this? As folks who have already suffered from dengue fever, we are concerned.

I witnessed spraying for mosquitoes in Las Mesas at the end of October. I felt bad for the young man holding the gas powered sprayer disbursing who know s what. I personally think the mosquitoes since mid October both in Las Mesas and Playa Larga are less than I have seen in previous seasons. I have heard the rains were late so that maybe a factor where you are?

We are in centro (Calle Gema) where every November for the last six years, there has been spraying. Everybody we know is complaining about the increase in mosquitoes.

The last rain was three weeks ago. There isn't usually spraying by the city during the dry season, but some hotels or condos continue to do some.

We live on Playa la Ropa. We are finding that the biting bugs are normal for this time of year. We have cut our garlic caps (Similares) from 3 a day, two at night and one in the morning, to one in the evening.

We have established a NO SPRAY home that is friendly to the amazing number of critters including our pets. We do not use poison especially on them!

Dengue?? Supposedly there are four types, and once you have one, you can't get the same one again. Personally we think that if there was a blood test study done on the population here, including us, it would show that we have all had the types that are present here. It just hits some people a LOT harder than others.

Hardly any mosquitos downtown. I hate spraying toxic crap on everything. Bats, birds and dragonflies do fine unless you live near fresh standing water. Garden watering can also cause mosquitos. What part of Zihuatanejo do you live in? La Ropa ALWAYS has mosquitos. Es un gran humedal.

I'm with jaime13. Here on Calle Gema there's a house next door that has been empty and for sale for several years. Their leaf-covered 2/3 filled swimming pool must be the world's largest mosquito hatchery. A pox on their house and on their thoughtlessness.
I'll take the spray over the mosquitoes anytime.

An abandoned pool. Just what I was thinking. A public health hazard. It should be reported to the local office of Salud Pública.

Take some olive oil over and dump it into the pool. It forms a film and when the mosquitos hatch, they can'y get thru the film and die!

Hola
Very good idea. The larvae, even though they live in water, must breathe air. The thin film of oil prevents them from reaching the air and they die.

How much for a drum of olive oil?

You don't need expensive olive oil. Use the cheapest vegetable oil you can buy. But recognize it is a temporary solution. The veg oil deteriorates and has to be replaced occasionally.

You don't need nearly that much! And it doesn't have to be Olive oil! We used to have a neighbour that had a fish pond which he never maintained after the otters cleaned his fish out! I used to sneak over there in the dead of night with a cup of olive oil while my wife cheered me on. Mosquitos love my wife!

Here in our part of town, Playa la Ropa, we have been commenting on how few mosquitos there are compared to last year. I haven't noticed any spraying for mosquitos recently but sometime back in September they came through the neighborhood spraying for them.

I stayed at the south end of La Ropa in mid-November and was pleasantly surprised at how few mosquitos there seemed to be, so near to the estuary at El Manglar. I came home with 5 or so bites, a record LOW for me, and used only about 1/4 of my planned allotment of repellent wipes.

I heard very few mosquitoes in Ixtapa.....;-)

There is very regular spraying in Ixtapa, compliments of Fonatur, the federal agency that is responsible for that sort of thing. Another advantage to living "out" in Ixtapa.

Yeah, careful because they're using malathion. I've smelled it often from the local fumigadores. If you've ever worked with it you never forget the smell.

If you've had dengue then you are immune to that type of infection (there are four types). So there's something in your favor.

True, if you have been infected with one type of dengue virus, of the four types, then you have lifelong immunity to that type. Around Zihua however, there are TWO types present.

I still bet that if blood tests were done, most of us would show that we have had both of them!

If you ever have had dengue, you know you have had it. No blood test required. Believe me, it is truly a, ahhh….remarkable experience.

I managed to get an "unidentified mosquito borne illness" in PV about 15 years ago. When it hit, we both knew it was serious. I did OK with my spouse taking excellent care of me until my father died and the family refused to do the memorial service without me. They didn't believe that I had a problem.

I was met at LAX, and the first words she said was, "He was right, you shouldn't have traveled."

Thanks to excellent care in Mexico, I only ended up with encephalitis, and only fell down for 11 months. I couldn't drive for 10 months, and have few memories of that time.

If I had been in the US, the bills would have been astronomical, and I wouldn't have had the great care I had here.

Weird things, mosquito born or not, are nothing to mess with. We believe that it is VERY important to take care of yourself and use doctors as necessary. We love the doctors in Mexico.

Most importantly, if you get sick, go to the doctors where it happened. They know what is local and don't have to spend loads of time and money figuring out what you have. The same is just as true for your pets.
