Shrimp is not caught locally and it is not something I recommend ordering when we have so much FRESH SEAFOOD. Never mind the practices used by shrimpers that kill fish, turtles and dolphins.

We buy shrimp at the fish market on Kyoto - Pescaderia El Dorado. They normally have white shrimp from Matzalan. Flash frozen on the boat just like all the shrimp available in Miami, etc. I haven't seen pink Gulf shrimp here. That would be quite a haul cross country in a refrigerated truck.
We're 24 hours driving from the Gulf of Mexico.

Mexico Man knows his shrimp!

The two significant landing ports for shrimp in Mexico are Mazatlan and Veracruz, with the majority coming from Mazatlan. They are typically frozen on the boats.

Rob is so right that our local seafood is what should be savored when you are here, but the shrimp is good too.

Our local source for the "non local" items (a few local items too) is PKS on the way to La Noria before you get to the Pemex. Huge selection of items.

I be wrong but I think there are some large aerated ponds in the north of Playa Larga where shrimp are being raised don't kn0w if they are in salt water or fresh.

I know they raise Tilapia north of Ixtapa in the mountains. Was really surprised when Will us took up to see where a stream starts coming out of the mountain. The stream fed the tanks with the over flow of the last tank returning to the stream. Sad Will is not doing the tours any more.

There definitely are shrimp being maricultured in the San Blas area.

There are crawdads (crawfish, mud bugs) being maricultured in Lago Presa El Infiernillo on the way up the mountain to Patzcuaro.

There are oysters being seeded for pearls in San Carlos.

There are bound to be other critters being raised too.

Will took us to a restaurant on the Ixtapa bypass that you selected your live fish that they cooked for you any way you wanted- great lunch thanks to Will.

"Maricultured". Interesting word, and no doubt technically and scientifically accurate. Much more palatable than, say, "shrimp farms", or "fish farms." Kinda like Albertans wanting the avoid the phrase "tar sands", preferring the more benign "oil sands".
I've been told that some (much?) of the shrimp sold here comes from shrimp farms in the Far East....Thailand or Vietnam. And that most of the shrimp caught in the Mazatlan area is exported to Japan, where it commands much higher prices. But those could just be rumours.

I'm guessing rumours. The shrimp I've eaten in Zihua are definitely not from Asia!

Manufactured doesn't sound better than farmed,it sounds fake, not real food.

That is why I always order the local fresh octopus!!!!
