Ixtapa after hurricane Rick

We had to go to Ixtapa yesterday, one week after Rick visited.

The amount of damage as compared to Zihuatanejo was mind blowing!!! We drove in on Paseo de Ixtapa and out on Paseo de los Pelicanos. The buildings on Paseo de Ixtapa appeared to be fine, but the number of trees and bushes uprooted was amazing. The road was clear, the piles of debris in the process of being picked up, but the tree damage as compared to Zihuatanejo was HUGE.

On Paseo de los Pelicanos we saw some of the biggest trees in the area down, roots 90 degrees to the earth. Hundreds of them, probably more. Walls down, roofs gone, absolutely unbelievable amounts of damage, and this was a week after the storm.

Zihuatanejo is so fortunate to be on the bay, and the winds obviously were no where near as intense as those in Ixtapa.

Yes, the damage in Ixtapa and in outlying colonias was extensive. To me, the worst of it is that so many of our huge old trees were uprooted. Hundreds of trees were lost. Damage can usually be repaired. Uprooted giants cannot.
Fonatur and others have been working every day to remove debris, but there are still large piles to be picked up. Be careful if you come here (bike, walk or drive) as there are piles blocking parts of the roads and paths. Cuidense.
