We are arriving from Canada and have always wondered what an acceptable amount would be for a tip. I exchanged cdn. for pesos at 15P per D. 15% tip would a small amount and would not want to insult the person nor do I want to come off as being flashy by way of over tipping.Just want to show my appreciation for the service.

10 to 15% is the local custom.

I'm told that Mexican visitors rarely tip. I normally tip 20%; cab drivers only if they help unload. Recently, one actually voluntarily carried my groceries upstairs! I tripled the fare.

While I understand the local custom and appreciate concerns about gringos over tipping, the past couple of years have been extraordinarily difficult. While we were there just after Thanksgiving, I was more generous than normal and plan to continue when we return in February. I think it’s a great way to support the local economy as those tips get spent at local businesses.

For what it is worth, I always tip at least 25% to 30% and sometimes more. I personally hand the tip to the mesero/a and tell them how much I appreciate their help and how much I love their city. I sure hope that no one considers it an insult. They work incredibly hard and have always treated me and anyone I have gone with very well. (There was one exception which proves the rule.)

Typical Californian mentality. That's what screwed up the Baha destinations. Curtious actions and respect go a long way and don't upset the economy. Ever see a taxi bypass a local mother and her 2 children to pick up a couple of gringos instead. We happened to be the gringo couple and it pissed off the taxi driver when I held the door open and insisted that the mother and her children take the taxi.

While I appreciate the sentiment, my behaviour is different. I consider it appropriate as a guest to adopt the practices of those whom I visit. If I am staying at a friend’s home, I eat when they eat and eat what they eat. When travelling I try to replicate local practices, including tipping.

Where I Iive in Canada, tipping is typically 15% at restaurants and 10% for take out. Tipping a taxi driver is a common practice for the basic service of a taxi.

I have to make an adjustment to the 20-25% that I understand is common in the USA. I make an adjustment to 10-15% at restaurants in the Zihuatanejo area and tipping a taxi driver for additional services or unusual circumstances.

Tipping at this level helps me to make donations to local “good works”, typically SPAZ in Zihuatanejo, SPAT in Troncones, to support funding for a spay-and-neuter clinic in Troncones, and to support a cat rescue operation there.

So if I understand you, you are saying that typical Godless, Pinko, Bleeding-heart, "What-you-do-unto-the-least-of-your-brethren-you-do-to-your-Savoir" LIBERAL Californians are very generous. Thank you for your compliment.

I fail to understand how the generosity of some could be blamed for the rudeness of others. However, I applaud you for insisting on courteous behavior from the taxista grosero.

(Point of information: I am actually based mostly in Rosarito which is one of the Baja destinations that was ruined by us according to your analysis. I tend to disagree. Rosarito is actually quite nice but it ain't Zihuatanejo.)

Hasn't it always been that one of the precepts of God-fearing, Flag-waving, Tough-love, Baby-eating CONSERVATIVES was that millionaires and billionaires and trillionaires could do whatever they wanted with their money, including spiriting it away from the taxman courtesy of Republican tax laws, taking space tours, and tipping overly generously to compensate for their avarice?

Mr. Ghost, I will do whatever I damn well please with my money. My handle isn't "Padrino" for nothing.

P.S. The words are spelled "Baja" and "Courteous."

Initially, I struggled with this and was somewhat afraid of insulting the locals. "Pinche Gringo is looking down on us! Who does he think he is?" At first, I justified it by telling myself that my culture tips 20% to 25% so I should, too. In fact, I will tip 20% to 25% of what the price would be in the U.S.

However, upon seeing the faces of some individuals which just beamed gratitude, I was hooked. I tip generously when I travel to Mexico. One hotel contacted me afterward and said that the maid wanted to thank me for the tip. She used it to buy some school clothes for her child. You just don't know how you will help a person.

Apologies to any who believe this is a bad practice.

Most europeans tip only on rare occasions, excellent service, as restaurant staff wages are regular wages, and not subpar as they can be in North America (more exactly US/Canada).
Tipping in Japan is an INSULT.
As I heard, to be confirmed, people visiting from Mexico City are not big tippers.:-(
We often saw people (whoever they were…) over tipping bartenders in all inclusives to be sure to get priority when requesting drinks, personally I really don’t like this attitude (and BTW I’m not saying in any mean that you are acting this way).
Just mentioning that’s hard to differentiate between someone over tipping to get something back (better service, priority over others, etc) or just wanting to be kind and generous to local staff.
We mostly stay in the 10-15-20% range, with some exceptions on outstanding services as some local staff may deliver, quite often in fact :-D
