The state of Guerrero's health officials confirm 15 currently active cases of Covid-19 in Zihuatanejo, 1 in Atoyac, 1 in Coyuca de Benítez, 211 in Acapulco, and 288 in the entire state. And it's the weekend.
Lots of families showed up this weekend before things get too expensive for them as rates all go up over the holidays. So be mindful there will be crowds this weekend.
We already have taxi drivers gouging their riders. One asshole tried to charge us $120 from the commercial zone of Ixtapa to downtown Zihuatanejo, a ride that only costs $85, and when I called him on it he said $100 was okay. I wasn't in the mood to argue but I should have. The fare is $85 and all I had to do was say "vamos a hablar con tu oficina" and he would've caved. He didn't appear too be impressed enough that we were locals to honor the rates we locals all know are THE rates. Hate that when that happens, but fuggem.
Americans from Tierra del Fuego to the Northern Territories have their hopes on Argentina as the last American team in the World Cup. For anglophiles, too bad England had a bad day. But for a missed penalty kick! Ouch!
Sunday night will be the actual high point of the celebrations of Guadalupe in Zihuatanejo (and the rest of Mexico). The last of the pilgrims will be arriving, and being a Sunday, it'll be even busier than usual with all the tourists in town. Should be fun! Food stalls and attractions will be set up in the street beside the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora Guadalupe. Most of the children will be in their traditional Mexican clothing. Please ask parents before taking photos of their kids. ¿Me das permiso para tomar una foto?
Around 11:00 or so most Mexicans will be tuned in to Canal de las Estrellas to see many of Mexico's most iconic and popular singers dedicate a song to Guadalupe's image in the Basílica in Tepeyác built in her "honor" by the Catholic church who like to try to claim her (and Guadalupanos will politely accept their charity). The tribute culminates in everyone singing Las Mañanitas to Guadalupe. By then I recommend you all be indoors or at least under a solid roof because fireworks and gunshots traditionally erupt at midnight all across Zihuatanejo and most of Mexico. Enjoy!
Cat lovers will be in heaven at Casa Kitty in Troncones, across the street from and with access to the facilities of Casa Ki. As if being anywhere in Troncones weren't already close enough to being in heaven.

With all the baitfish in the bay lately, the seabirds are loving it. I've rarely seen this many patos buzos swimming in the same place as I did this morning.
