:microbe: Guerrero's health officials confirm 50 currently active cases of Covid-19 in Zihuatanejo, 3 in Petatlán, 1 in Técpan, 1 in Atoyac, 2 in Benito Juárez, 1 in Coyuca de Benítez, 81 in Acapulco, and 217 in the entire state.

:bone: Zihuatanejo was named "Pueblo Mágico" this Monday afternoon, though I can't imagine what criteria were used. We used to be a Pueblo Mágico naturally, but then along came the politicians who allowed and promoted land invasions and the loss of our hillsides to both rich and poor, and with their painted cement and faux brick streets and sidewalks, and down went the tall iconic and majestic old trees that gave Zihuatanejo its magic feel, so frankly it doesn't much feel like the magical Zihuatanejo I used to know. This reeks of politics and not based on the same criteria used to consider places like Pátzcuaro and Taxco "Pueblos Mágicos". I expect the mayor will milk this for all he can get politically but that it won't enhance our tourism, thus my comment about politics. Especially considering that Fonatur will turn Ixtapa over to Zihuatanejo's municipal government at the end of this year. Twenty years ago this designation might've had a positive impact, but I just don't see it as a meaningful designation now, just a meaningless simulation. Does anyone think I'm being too cynical?

:cloudwithlightningandrain: Sunday evening and Monday afternoon we received delicious rains that cooled temps down considerably, though the evening events were cancelled at the Cancha Municipal. Unfortunately, as with every single rain I've witnessed for the past 34 years, tons of garbage washed into the bay and onto our beaches. Amazing that for decades one city administration after another takes no serious measures to solve this problem. To the contrary, for the past 23 years each city government has settled more people on our hillsides to be their political clients.

You would not like what myself and many other people think.

Maybe, just maybe the Zihuatanejo government will be able to better focus on the management of Ixtapa tourism and leave Zihua's remaining natural beauty alone. Maybe. Lets hope they realize that they have two different markets and that kept separated in style and management is to the benefit of one another.

I agree. Zihuatanejo was fine the way it was. Palm trees and beautiful beaches are what brings us down.
The colorful signs and the concrete do nothing but distract from the natural beauty.

Some of the residents who live on the top of a hill which previously had no pavement are thankful for now having an easier method to transport goods to their residences.

Except the plan that was working for Zihuatanejo, the one that guaranteed a better future for our children, was the one with NO DEVELOPMENT above the Cota 70. Unfortunately the plan was abandoned and modified by unscrupulous and corrupt politicians. So the taxpaying residents at the bottom of the hills, who rightfully expected PUBLIC SECURITY and other improved services for their taxes, instead watched their taxes spent on accommodating people who basically stole land that wasn't for sale and negotiated with crooked politicians to get title to that land, along with eventual roads and services at inflated costs, in exchange for their votes.

Our beloved Pueblo Mágico is pulling a disappearing act.

That seems to be the growing consensus.

Lupita was on the original committee to get Zihuatanejo designated as a Pueblo Mágico, but that was a couple of decades ago when Bolivar Navarrete was a mayoral candidate and Lupita was his suplente, before todo-incluido had devastated Ixtapa's shopping centers, before Zihuatanejo lost its hillsides to invaders and investors, and we still had the Regata de Río Balsas in our bay. It was a very different community then.

Although rarely commented about, the same could be said about Troncones as it has seen its fair share of development and lost of nature.

Reliable sources are talking about even greater development in the Troncones area in the next 5 years.

Yes, greedy slimebag politicians and arquitectos trying to launder their ill-gotten money are spending it on condo developments. But Troncones has no one but themselves to blame. They wanted their roads paved and they got their wish. They wanted publicity and they got their wish. They wanted to sell their lands to foreigners and they got their wish. It'll soon start to resemble Malibu South.

Moral of the story? Careful what you wish for. But hey, all the folks who made their money selling it all are getting old and won't have to suffer watching the coming depredation and degradation.
