Best place in Zihu/ Ixtapa to buy Tequilas ( Variety/Price)
Wondering where is the best place for Price on Tequilas?
Best place in Zihu/ Ixtapa to buy Tequilas ( Variety/Price)
My “go to” place to buy tequila for others is Tequila Por Favor on Cuauhtémoc in el centro. It has a wide selection of mid-priced up to expensive tequilas. This includes tequilas I have not seen outside of Mexico. Samples are offered for many of the tequilas.
For myself, I usually stock up at Soriana or Sam’s Club when the have one of the “buy 2, get one free sales”. These include the well known labels like Cuervo and Sausa. The Soriana has a wider selection than Sam’s. I’m not sure when all of the sales are, but I know there is one in November at Buen Fin. I believe there is one in July. I’m not sure if there are other predictable sale times as well.

Hello
When I used to drink tequila, I loved sausa blanco. It has a very raw distinctive taste. Not for shooting, but delicious to sip. I have since switched to mezcal and rarely drink tequilia anymore. I even order my margies with mezcal.
PS. If you insist on tequila, I found that Tequila Town in Ixtapa had a great selection of tequilas as well as a room (completely humidity controlled) with great Cuban cigars.

Tequila Por Favor, both in Zihua and Ixtapa, is a good place for more unusual tequilas not found in the US or Soriana. They have many 'additive free' tequilas and a good selection of mezcals. You can claim tequilas to be 100% blue agave as long as there is under 1% additives. That probably was ok 20 years ago, but now with concentrated sweeteners, not so much. A good site for reference is tequilamatchmaker.com. They list most of the additive free tequilas. They also list the type of extraction. The old school, brick oven method is like many mezcals still employ. It's labor and time intensive, where the agave cores or pinas are mashed and then heated to release the sugars for fermentation. The the big companies, like Diageo with Don Julio, have taken over many of the major labels. In the name of efficiency, they use basketball court sized diffusers that use high pressure steam and hydrochloric acid to release the sugars. Then, a bit of sweetener and vanilla flavoring is added to simulate longer aging in wood barrels. Not to pick on Diageo, but they own Jim Beam bourbon and reuse those barrels for several of their tequilas.
Mezcal from Guerrero is usually derived from the cupreata agave and is quite good for reasonable cost.

I always found that store to be the place to go. Not only reasonable pricing and good selection but knowledgeable staff always willing to inform you. You can actually go there for tasting sessions too for mezcal and tequila...
