Humpbacks in the bay yesterday
I was asked to share this, what I sent to a couple of friends:
We hit the beach with our boards about 7:45 this morning and just as we put them in the water, a humpback whale and her calf breeched a couple hundred yards out in the bay!!!! The next 2.5 hours were amazing!!!!
She was about 60 feet long and the baby 20. We completely crossed the bay with them twice, stopping and sitting several times. First time, we were maybe 20 feet apart, and the baby circled us then swam between us! Curious. Mom was always very near by, two other paddlers came out, two kayaks and a couple of boats. Everyone was really good.
When we were crossing behind them to las gatas, the baby bumped my board with it's nose!!!!!! I didn't see it, everyone else did, one woman claimed she got pictures. Didn't knock me off, but it would have been cool if it had.
We finally came in when our skin was beginning to feel like we'd had sun on us. SO EXCITING!!!

Awesome experience. It is no nice that people are learning to give them space. If they find comfort here, they are most likely going to return. Thank you for the nice posting.

Wow - that's an experience of a life time! Thank you for sharing and for respecting the beautiful creatures. I wonder what the mother cow and calf thought of their encounter with you!

The calf was obviously very curious and mom seemed to be relaxed and unconcerned.
