We heard some small waves crashing on the beach during the night, but everything was calm by sunrise, and the bay was again calm as glass. So pass our days of picture-postcard-perfect weather, one after another. Daily highs around 30°C, lows around 20°C. Absolutely idyllic!
Come listen to the beautiful danzón music in Playa del Artista on Friday evenings just after the sun goes down and watch the dancers. A very enjoyable way to experience some local culture that has been popular here for many decades. A taste of Old Zihuatanejo.
At Daniel's tonight there were many foreigners enjoying country & western music, several were dancing. To me it seems a stark contrast to our local culture, but I understand that folks far from home are more comfortable with their own music sometimes.
Acapulco continues to have a problem with the spread of dengue. Zihuatanejo does not. Bully for us, but poor Acapulco has suffered so much already. So glad to be right where I am!

Hermosos colores del resplandor del amanecer sobre una bahía tranquila en Zihuatanejo. Y como siempre, ahí están los pescadores.

Hola
What are the current Covid numbers? An acquaintance of ours just came down with it. She is a gringa who lives here. Hasn't been out of the country so she got it here.

It has been a non-issue here in Guerrero for months. Your Gringa friend may have gotten it from another Gringo. According to WHO, there were only 190 confirmed cases reported in all of Mexico during the 28 days prior to Jan. 7. Zero in Guerrero. So it's much more likely that foreigners are bringing it with them and infecting others.

That is imposable.

That is imposable.
Is that a combination of "improbable" and "impossible"? Or a new word entirely?

Well, son of a gun! You have to look hard, but apparently "imposable" IS a word! None of the meanings, however, appear to make sense in this context. I'm guessing a spelling error.

In British Columbia there are over 10,000 cases of the flu. Some people think it's covid. My wife and I are at the end of this flu. It'll be 3 weeks come Monday for us. It's really nasty and yes, we did a covid testing and each time negative.

Since there is no organized testing being done, and those that do self testing are not reporting test results to any health authorities, it is impossible to state the current prevalence, either in Mexico or the US with any degree of certainty. Perhaps the most reliable way to judge it in any area is the testing of sewage for the virus. In some areas of the US it seems too be increasing, but the current variant does not seem as severe.

Yup,there are a lot of irresponsible Canadians coughing away in Combis and elsewhere with no consideration of others.

I just returned from Oaxaca City via Mexico aeropuerto and many Mexicans wearing cubrebocas in Mexico y Oaxaca but not in Zihua. Lots of coughing and hacking on plane trips and susepct that masking will arise again soon.

It's here and growing, no doubt. Zihuatanejo is fortunate to have our public lives almost exclusively outdoors which keeps transmission down and mostly very low risk. Mexico (city) is having a huge wave, just like every other major city in the world. And just like almost everywhere else, the official numbers are very low because there is very little testing and formal reporting happening (including in the US). The sewage tests tell the real story. Also look at hospital capacity numbers.
Between foreigners and visitors from the city, I wouldn't ride in a combi or taxi without a mask. Both times I have caught it has been from transportation, one of those in Zihua. Anywhere else, non-issue unless you are very high risk.

Although the risk outdoors is low, I think I would mask in areas where there are groups outdoors that are largely stationary. An example would be the basketball court. We continue to mask in airports, planes until the ventilation has been on for a while, grocery shopping and in theaters. I can’t say whether it is due to our behaviors, being fully vaxxed including RSV and flu or just incredibly good luck, neither of us has had the joy of Covid RSV or influenza.

If you're fully vaccinated, do you still have to worry about getting Covid or the flu? I do sanitize the handles on carts when I go shopping, but I don't wear a mask.

No vaccine is perfect, The Cold circulating today is quite different than the original strain. The technical term is antigenic drift. that's why there have been boosters. If you are fully vaccinated your odds of catching it are much lower and your odds of serious illness are nearly non-existent. That said if you are at risk, primarily because of age or chronic respiratory issues masking in some situations does add an additional degree of protection.
Covid (and RSV and influenza) are respiratory viruses, they are spread primarily through the air and only very rarely from touch. One possible route would be someone coughing or sneezing on something, then you touching the same area and then you touching you lips or nose. Because the odds are so low we don't bother with sanitizing surfaces. Its not wrong, it just doesn't add very much protection. In terms of contracting them, sanitizing surfaces does very little. There are some bacterial and rare viral infections that are spread by touch, but as long as your skin is intact the odds are extremely low.

I am not worried about dying from it, but I can tell you that when I was sick, it was miserable, even with a less severe case thanks to vaccines. I would like to avoid that feeling as much as possible.
That said, I am not changing any travel plans over it. I just try to protect myself and have eyes wide open about the real prevalence vs the "official" numbers that don't reflect reality anymore.
