Unfortunately, our local government continues more interested in benefiting its overly ambitious politicians than its citizens. Another day, another shooting in plain sight on a busy main street, and once again, the police take so long to arrive that they are less than useless. But the mayor insists that tearing up the pedestrian streets so that he can replace the pretty adoquín paving stones with his silly painted concrete cubes is more important than public security, because all he's done for the municipal police during the past 5 years is give them new uniforms and a few new trucks. Instead of professionalizing our local police force, he's mostly just poured cement, too much of it in projects of dubious if not null necessity such as the repaving of downtown's pedestrian streets. I hope none of you had to witness today's tragic event on Avenida Morelos near the Elektra store. I wish we had capable city administrators instead of greedy self-serving politicians.
Other than this extremely unfortunate event, it was another absolutely gorgeous day in Zihuatanejo. Lots of people have shown up for the long weekend, since Monday is a legal holiday. Downtown shops and restaurants were doing a good business, from what we observed, and smiling families could be seen walking the streets, the waterfront and enjoying the beaches.
The waves from the mar de fondo event provided wonderful sleeping "music" this Friday night, but by Saturday evening they seemed to have let up. A nice cool breeze was blowing in out of the sierra while we strolled to the pier and back this evening.
For those who care about such things, the ISS was visible tonight and will be visible twice Sunday evening, then again on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. Get the ISS Spotter app or check the link under the SKYWATCHER section of my LOCAL WEATHER page.

Talking about shootings in plain sight:
Around 12:45 a.m approximately in front of the noisy obnoxious bar in the Zócalo area, Primer Cuadro Centro Zihuatanejo, there was at least 6+ gun shots. Ambulance just showed up at 1:02 a.m.
As usual, I suspect the delinquent "got away with murder", par for the course here, "ni modo".

Though it is accurate, I don't care for the use of that terminology "foreigners ", either, e.g, in the way you referred to in your comment.
(the context I think your indicating is us "Foreigners" being visitors, vacationers, tourists, and the like..)
& NO Rob, it DOESN'T particularly "BOTHER ME"!
I'm 100 percent already aware of the definition, & what the term refers to,
As far as your insult against me,
I'm NOT as dumb as you apparently think I am!
This isn't a question of your accusal of "thick skin"!
I'm simply commenting, that in my own particular opinion, that the term has a hostile vibe to it, which varies, DEPENDING ON THE SITUATION IT'S USED IN!
Surely others don't have that perception, that's fine, NO problem with me.
No big deal!
btw, I was expecting that you would sift out something to bicker with me about & make a criticism against me, knew that already when I posted this.
Now then, back to the term "Extranjero"/ foreigner.....
I would prefer, especially in your posts where you usually are referring to FOREIGN vistors, for example:
Visitors from Canada (or wherever)
vacationers from the USA
Tourists from "X" wherever it is.
A bit more "Kinder & gentler" as it should / could be?
As far as "can't do anything", about many issues, that's the case, e.g. the Alacalde's cement habit.
It has been mentioned to contact the local Gobierno's Fb page, or deliver a written statement to the H. Ayuntamiento.
That said, in general, "Foreigners " intervening in Mexco's affairs isn't well accepted, and in fact prohibited in some situations.
So, I don't think it would make any difference, more specifically in CHANGING LAWS.
Then again, obviously, YES, "Extranjeros" do participate in many events as our leading Spokesperson and Mexico's Representative noted in his reply.
Though, in other situations unrelated, such as dog issues, assisting with donations to the lower income population, etc, etc,
obviously, "Foreigners" have had an impact and made a difference.

Another project no property owner I know in the area wants except apparently a realtor from California. It's a totally unnecessary project. No one asked for it, least of all the folks at Capricho del Rey whose business will be severely hurt if not closed altogether. This is one of those money-grab projects.

Maybe the owner you refer to owns her own building and has no monthly rent payments to worry about. Which would indicate she is well enough off that to lose income for several days -- or possibly weeks -- is of no real concern to her and her family. But not all merchants are in that league.
What is so irritating about this "beautification" stunt is that it is being pulled off right in the heart of the "gringo" high season, the only time of the year for many small operators to put a few pesos in the bank. And here they are facing significant income loss.
For what?

You're still misinterpreting things. I never said they weren't helping. And the community is much more than the few poor families they help. Most of us never invaded the lands we live on to gain possession of them, but that's a whole other perspective. They helped him become mayor by creating thousands of clients for him. I warned them well over a decade ago that they were being used, but some folks simply misunderstood and others got angry with me, not unlike the response I'm getting now. Excuse me if I pass on filling you in on the entire history. Much of it can be found in my blogs, linked on my home page, and much of it can also be found in old posts here and on my old Message Board Archives. The two search engines here can help. And being a mayor isn't a politician's only goal or reward for having tens of thousands of beholden voters.
Meanwhile, the damage to the city is done and continues. All those hillsides above the 70-meter mark were supposed to be set aside as our ecological zones. We were quite happy with that. Then came along unscrupulous politicians, professional squatters, and good-hearted but poorly informed people. To some folks, the appearance of doing good is more important than the actual outcome of their actions.

NO NO NO, you MISINTERPRETED my comment. Let's clarify--->
& NO Rob, it DOESN'T particularly "BOTHER ME"!
I'm 100 percent already aware of the definition, & what the term refers to, thanks.
As far as your insult against me, "thick skin " is an exaggeration,
though if it makes you happy, call me whatever pleases you.
I'm NOT as dumb as you apparently think I am!
I was referring to the CONTEXT that I think user victorio was referring to,
and NOT to the entire usage of the term wherever it is used.
I would prefer, especially in your posts where you usually are referring to FOREIGN vistors, for example:
Visitors from Canada (or wherever)
vacationers from the USA
Tourists from "X" wherever it is.
So, instead of saying el Paseo del Pescador was crowded with "Foreigners", I would prefer any of the terms I noted above
(visitors, vacationers, tourists), then if you wanted, indicate if those were Mexican nationals, and/or from other countries.
All I am trying to convey, that I.M.O, in the case of your International visitors you typically refer to in your posts as victorio seemed to indicate,
terminology for them that is "Kinder & gentler" description of them would be more welcoming.
"Foreigners intervening isn't well accepted? What????? They sure accepted all these charity events started by extranjeros and co-opted by el niño del cemento for his own political purposes. Again, to clarify my comment:
More specifically in CHANGING LAWS.
I'm already quite aware that as you noted,"Extranjeros" do participate in a variety of your local events,
though apparently as you noted, violations have ocurred, and your mention of "Jorgito" taking credit as being "responsible" for helping "tens of thousands of poorly informed voting citizens".
Go ahead, your turn.

Maybe I am way off here but I’m assuming these shootings are cartel related. So you expect the poorly paid and trained local police to show up and confront cartel members? Seems to me that they would just be throwing their life away. I still feel safer in Zihuatanejo than back here in California with our defunded police.

Craig, I don´t think you are "way off" in ascribing these ever-increasing shootings to "cartels," a much over-used and little understood term. But you are someways off.
All of these shootings occur for one obvious reason -- easy access to firearms, pretty much all of which come from the USA. It is nearly impossible for everyday Mexicans to buy a handgun, let alone a military-grade assault weapon, in Mexico. I mean, how many gun stores do you see around Zihua? It is Mexico´s great misfortune, in this sense, to live next door to the world´s largest weapons manufacturer and exporter.
A great many of these shootings are related to themes more mundane that a "cartel" coke deal gone bad, although money is often involved. Some are personal revenge killings, others relate perhaps to a romance gone sour. A fair number relate to politics (and we are entering election season.) A threatening sideways glance in a bar might do it. But at bottom theses killings are caused by easy access to a weapon, and the shooters sure knowledge, in a country with a broken justice system, that he can get away with it.
Is there anything America can do to help Mexico deal with this firearms plague?
Former US Ambassador to Mexico Christopher Landau had some ideas on the subject, ideas he passed on to Washington, but he found during his tenure (2019-21) that no one of either party was interested.

C'mon Papa. Haven't you heard? Guns don't kill people, people kill people. Those 'shots' that were heard? Nothing of the sort. It was someone merely pointing his finger and yelling 'bang' a couple times, whereupon some poor soul fell dead of natural causes.

Gun control in the U.S. is the same thing as California going to all electric vehicles by 2035, just a pipe dream. I will let you go disarm Chicago and see how that goes. But I’m one of those guys that gets up every morning, goes to work, takes care of his family, wears a red hat and has a locked closet full of guns and ammo. I must be a huge problem to the world.
There were plenty of guns around in the 50’s and 60’s but we didn’t have this problem. Maybe it’s a little more complex than just a gun issue but it is definitely getting worse. While you are at it can you solve the global warming issue also. It’s gotten so bad I’m afraid to go on our annual Zihuatanejo trip at the end of October, too many hurricanes at this time nowadays.

That's because you're a stable, well adjusted, mature and law-abiding citizen. But there are too many people out there who are living on the fringes of reality - angry, bitter, frustrated, often delusional, armed to the teeth with military weaponry, fueled by the propaganda of Trump, the NRA, social media, Fox and Newsmax, and extreme white-supremacist chat rooms; people who think it would be just swell to overthrow the government and slaughter little kids in classrooms.
The question is (and always has been): how do you allow responsible people like you to keep your guns and yet pass legislation to keep AR-15s away from the lunatics? Or do we just shrug our collective shoulders, figure there's nothing that can be done as the mountains of bodies pile up, and go back to watching Dancing with the Stars, knowing - and not much caring - that there will be another mass shooting coming along shortly?

I saw a huge banner in support of a candidate for local Presidente, so the current guy appears to have some opposition. Is the 4 or 6 year term, with no legal path for re-election, a thing of the past?
Does "El Cemento" plan to rip up the streets before his current term ends? You mentioned that his wife is running.....is this to get around a prohibition on re-election?
