Registering Scooter

I have the opportunity to buy a scooter from a friend. He is the first owner and bought it in Zihua. Is it possible to register it (so I can get a legal plate - there is already one on it)? How to you (or can you) get insurance. Any insight would be helpful as I make my decision. I'm from US and my friend is Canadian. I stay in a house owned by family member in Zihua.

It's easy if you are either a permanent or temporary resident. You need the original bill of sale (fractura) a copy of your residency card, a copy of the tarjeta de transito and a copy of a CFE bill showing your address. Pay by credit card.

Insurance is easy, most commonly used is Qualitas. It can likely all be done on line, they have an office across from the end of the Soriana parking lot, and one somewhere in Ixtapa.

Drivers are pretty crazy in Mexico, so we sold our car in Zihua. I would never ride a scooter or a motorcycle down there.

You have to be always on the defensive, no matter what. However, I have found that most drivers are far more courteous with scooters than they are with other cars.

Of course, it only takes one Yahoo ...

That's a great question and one that is relevant to me.
If I may ask what is the brand and engine size?
And if you are willing can you give approximate price you will pay?
Scooters are a way of life here in Thailand and much of Asia.
I own an old small engine Honda Click- I think it's a 110 cc.
And have rented several others.
Yes- of course you have to drive ULTRA defensively.
And even with that I have been in 4 motorbike accidents- none of which were of course my fault!

And of course here- hardly anyone has insurance much less drivers license.
And helmets are legally required but barely enforced.
Police may stop you and fine you the cost of a helmet.

Good luck

Getting a driver's license in Zihua was easy. No knowledge or driving test, just an application fee.

Are we to assume that they wanted you to surrender your U.S. or Canadian license?

No. All they wanted was money; 50 Pesos, if I remember correctly.
