It saddens me to no end to see what is happening in La Ropa. The bay's coastal region from La Gaviota to Capricho del Rey is under attack by an unscrupulous mayor who owns a cement company and who has no respect for Zihuatanejo's natural environment or its natural beauty. He already paved over the piece of land between La Gaviota and El Marlín, leaving not a single patch of dirt or a blade of grass, and sadly no neighbors have stepped up to denounce the recent ongoing ecocide, and the ones who are trying to denounce it do so behind the scenes because they're afraid of reprisals from our vengeful mayor. There's already way too much cement in Zihuatanejo adding to the ambient temperature along with the loss of trees and vegetation that this mayor continues cutting down, including now the protected mangroves and other trees along this stretch of the coast. The federal agencies of SEMARNAT and PROFEPA who are responsible for policing and protecting the environment have no local offices and are understaffed in Guerrero, I would say on purpose thanks to greedy and unscrupulous politicians. The project is already covering up the beautiful sea-polished boulders and the marine life that inhabits that part of the coast. People who should be protecting this stretch of the bay's coast are disappointingly staying quiet. First the mayor gets away with essentially privatizing La Ropa and turning it into a beach where locals no longer feel welcome, then he paves part of what little shoreline remains natural just to make himself some money before his term ends this year. Disgusting!

Clouds began showing up this afternoon from the subtropical jet stream that's predicted to bring us rain this Friday and Saturday. Otherwise, it was yet another absolutely picture-postcard-perfect day in paradise with a balmy breeze and warm daytime temperatures and refreshing evenings perfect for sleeping listening to the sounds of small waves in Zihuatanejo's bay.

Don't forget to come enjoy the music and dancing in Plaza del Artista this Friday evening!

[image]Though the sea turtle "season" has been much slower than usual for this time of year, allegedly due to the effect of El Niño, whales are still inhabiting our coast as they give birth and care for their calves. I highly recommend the services of Zihuatanejo Ixtapa Charters for whale watching as well as fishing, day excursions, parties, snorkeling or just about anything else you can think of to do on the water. Well maintained yachts and equipment with experienced and helpful captains and crews.

You are right saying more concrete equals higher temperatures. Ixtapa is noticeably cooler first thing in the morning, because there´s so much original jungle/green space remaining there.

It´s an old complaint, as Joni Mitchell sang some 50 years ago: "They paved paradise and put up a parking lot."

As long as folks associate a newly paved surface with an increase in their property values, which partially explains these enthusiasms, nothing will change.

has anyone else seen some of the before and after pictures of some of the colonias that have benefitted from now having paved roads? Truly remarkable.

I know some might slam my comments, but you can find some of the photos on the Zihua Gob Face page and judge for yourselves.

Yes, quite a nice scam for the current mayor. First, as Director de Fibazi, instead of upholding the law he allowed thousands of people to steal public lands in what is supposed to be Zihuatanejo's ecological zones, then he induces their votes for his first election in exchange for first promising them title to the lands they stole, and then he gets them to vote for him a second time by putting painted cement stairways, roads and even little parks in them, all with his cement paid for by the taxpayers on no-bid public contracts. Oh, then he increases everyone's taxes by 20% to reward himself with even more no-bid public contracts for his little scam during his last year and launches his wife's political campaign so he can continue doing it for another 6 years.

I miss all the shade trees that used to cool our homes and streets and the downtown beach. I miss the original Zihuatanejo, not the faux-brick palm-tree lined phony one we are getting that looks more like Disneyland than Zihuatanejo.

yes, I first drove here in 1972 and fondly remember the endless jungle roads from Mazatalan to ACA and the large lagoon in current day las salinas. the nights were full of stars and the mornings were a soundtrack of many awakening birds. no traffic, few stores but a lot of fish and coconut.

The benefits of paving a dirt track in a "colonia" that needs it are obvious. I think what the moderator is getting at in his comments refers to the downtown "beautification" project, of tearing up a serviceable pedestrian walkway, esp. for reasons of personal financial gain. If "they" were possessed of any ecological sense at all, they would have just planted more palm trees, ¿no?
