Zihuatanejo awoke to another refreshingly cool morning without a cloud in the sky. The day quickly warmed up into another summer-like picture-postcard-perfect day, but the ocean water temperature continues dropping, reaching a chilly 26.9°C, cool enough to keep most locals out of the water. Still no snow in our forecast.

We were unable to enjoy our evening walk to the pier due once again to another pay-to-attend SailFest event. Not the fault of the event organizers. A shame the municipal government can't get this right. The pier is not a private event hall, and the alternative access for strollers, boat workers and folks returning from Las Gatas around the back of the offices of the Capitanía del Puerto with its strong stench of urine and feces is insulting to everyone, especially our visitors. While it is certainly a wonderful musical event, the municipal government can't keep treating locals and tourists like second class citizens and not expect criticism. Again, not criticizing the event organizers. They're busting their humps and doing a super-human job, and they deserve our praise.

Not sure if you all have heard by now, but Pizza Hut just opened in Zihuatanejo. I have nothing against them, but not many of us are thrilled to see corporate-owned fast-food franchises open up here, especially when we already have so many delicious local pizza restaurants. They'll be lucky if they can stay in business.

Thursday is Pozole day! For those of you who partake, ¡buen provecho!

We haven't been seeing many sea turtles laying eggs this year. Possibly an effect of El Niño. I saw one nest hatch earlier this week, and one nest laid last week, and that's been about it for the whole month of February on Playa Principal. Nothing like a normal turtle nesting season.

The Feria de Primavera (Spring Fair) returns to Barra de Potosí next Tuesday, February 27 from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, so mark your calendar! There will be arts, crafts, clothing, food and music. All for a wonderful cause: the community of Barra de Potosí!

From an attendee’s point of view the pier is an excellent venue for events. It’s outside with a great view, soft breeze blowing, stars overhead . While it impacts some folks somewhat I doubt the folks returning from Las Gatas are bothered too much and locals are well informed when these events happen and are able to adjust accordingly. I think the good outweighs the bad. Just my humble opinion.

Once upon a time they used ropes and simply routed people along the side of the pier, not into stinky land. Why not again?

But locals weren't informed. We came across several quite elderly people we know who take their evening strolls with younger family members who were on their way to the pier when we told them the situation. Like us, they prefer not to take the stench-filled route on the collapsing walkway behind the port captain's building. As for the tourists, what a terrible image they were left with of our community.
