CafeZIHto de Altura
Thursday morning Lupita and I found ourselves climbing out from under TWO sheets to keep us warm during the night. It must've gotten down to around 18°C overnight, and it's predicted to be the same tonight and possibly down to 16°C overnight during the coming weekend. But the sun quickly warms things up, and this Thursday was another sunny day with a light breeze and fair seas. A perfect place to be for beachgoers seeking to get some sun and relax at the beach.
I was surprised at some of the racist and hateful remarks directed at me yesterday on social media by a few Troncones folks for my trying-to-be-helpful suggestion that a boombox car show planned for the end of March might not be good for local tourism. I won't be recommending any businesses of Roberto Rosas, that's for damn sure. I was quite surprised at the blatant anti-gringo racist backlash from him and a very few other locals there who probably should be more grateful for the current high-caliber of tourists along with part- and full-time residents they get from north of the border. When they've had those car shows here in Zihuatanejo, it has always resulted in a parade through downtown with about 20 cars circulating over and over with their stereo's so loud they set off alarms and even break windows. Something that shouldn't be allowed in downtown Zihuatanejo unless it's an actual scheduled parade, and even then the sound needs to be moderated so as not to cause permanent injury to others. It occurred to me that visitors to Troncones might not appreciate the noise either.
Election season officially begins this March 1st, so politicians cannot distribute any social assistance with few exceptions until after the election on June 2nd. It's also when the campaigns get under way, so expect lots of propaganda and blaring megaphones from passing cars from now until then. Locally we elect a new mayor, and nationally a new president.
Café Caracol has moved caddycorner across the street from its location on the ground floor of our former home to one of the locals on our new home. They now have a large upstairs terrace where folks can enjoy delicious fresh coffee from Atoyac. Come have a cup of fresh brewed coffee and enjoy watching downtown Zihuatanejo wake up and come to life.
Don't forget to come to Plaza del Artista around sunset on Friday evening to enjoy the music and dance of danzón. Always a lovely experience.
