Big dance this Saturday night for free at Las Salinas. Banda los Chikillos and then Mariana Seoane are scheduled to play. Should be some great music and a lot of fun.
I forgot to mention earlier that this weekend is a MEGA PUENTE, a SUPER LONG WEEKEND. It may be the only one of the year, and we have a lot of puentes. Both Friday and Monday are official days of rest across Mexico, and sure enough Friday morning there were busloads of people with their suitcases and coolers up and down Playa Principal waiting for the water taxis to begin taking people to Playa Las Gatas. This Saturday evening at 7:30 well past sunset the water taxis were still bringing people back from Las Gatas. There's supposed to be a limit as to how many people can be there at once, because frankly the overcrowding at Las Gatas as well as Isla Ixtapa is literally killing the coral, among other problems it causes.
Although they don't spend a lot of money and they tend to drink and litter too much, Lupita and I both love seeing all the people who show up for our puentes. Groups of families and friends, many who have never seen the ocean, marvel in awe at everything we locals are able to enjoy daily. It's the same here as it was for me in Florida and the Virgin Islands. Although the tourism industry causes problems for the community, I still enjoy seeing all the people marveling at and appreciating the place I call home, especially the down-home regular folk.
Whether you want to go whale watching, sportfishing, sightseeing or snorkeling, my friend Capitán Ramón Olea of the panga Oleaje offers an affordable adventure waiting to be enjoyed. Ramón knows all the local fishing and snorkeling spots as well as what else is worth seeing. His 24' covered panga doesn't offer much luxury, but his expertise in fishing and his local knowledge of our coast and its marine life is second to none! Ramón practices "catch and release" fishing when possible.

Muchos pescadores guardan sus pangas en Laguna Las Salinas. La pesca es como se gana la vida cientos de familias en Zihuatanejo, algo que no ha cambiado en muchas generaciones.

One marvelous quality about ZIH is how it appeals to &
attracts people from one end of the social and economic spectrum to the other.
