renting beach ATV's
Numerous businesses rent ATV tours on the beach. The tours are conducted in a Turtle Sanctuary near Pantla. The tours are also undertaken at night in fast beach cars that race down the beach with giant lights. The local authorities have permitted these tours. However, the use of motor vehicles on the Beach is illegal. Federal law prohibits this activity. Only federally permitted turtle workers have permission and carry their permits. The businesses advertise in the open on the internet. A quick Google search shows many of these businesses. The local government doesn't care or they have a different motivation. DO NOT RENT FROM THESE PEOPLE. Locals and Ex-pats alike are furious with them, and and they are destroying the turtle habitat. They access the beach near Troncones through protected waterways: mangroves and private property. I assume that the tourists who rent do not know the damage they are causing, hence this message. Many of us are going to Profepa since the local government is unresponsive. The beach is for all to enjoy if you don't drive on it. Please don't be part of the problem

THANK YOU!
Unfortunately, I find that even after warning many tourists, including English-speakers, they still contract the tour. And that is one of the problems with tourism. They don't care if they destroy your community or the natural habitat as long as they have a good time and get a bang for their buck. I've lost count of how many communities and habitats I've seen tourism destroy, especially when the local government is simply complicit through its own unbridled greed. In Florida we used to say (and still do) that the city and county commissioners have never met a developer whose money they didn't like. It's proving even more so here where the equivalent of our county commissioners, los regidores, basically serve as a rubber stamp for whatever the mayor wants, as long as he shares the spoils with them.
Though the local government has no problem banning dogs and people with glass or styrofoam containers from the beach, after DECADES of repeated pleas to them regarding motorized vehicles on beaches, they continue to shirk their responsibilities, same as they do with land thieves, because they don't want to lose any potential votes or alienate people they can exploit. Since tourists don't vote in local elections, local politicians pay no attention to their complaints or needs unless they see a benefit to exploit for their own purposes.
I strongly urge you all to file denuncias with Profepa.

Hola Rob
It was nice to meet you and Lupita a few weeks ago and discuss the mosquito spraying program where people and diners were being sprayed while walking and eating their dinners ????Just curious if Profepo that you refer to has ever done anything to alleviate anyone’s concerns?

Yes, they have. I'd rather not go into specifics on local matters because it could jeopardize ongoing investigations, but Cabo Pulmo in Baja California del Sur is an excellent example of what Profepa can do. All over Mexico there are success stories where Profepa has rescued the environment as well as forced local governments to respect federal laws.

I just watched a small YouTuber followmemexico do a video of this exact ATV tour. I was thinking turtle nest’s the entire time, you must’ve watched the same thing.

I didn't need to see a video, I saw it live, up-close and personal! The worst offenders try to intimidate us when we ask them to stop. They don't care about turtle nests nor that their action is Federally prohibited.

If you took some facial pictures of these people and posted them on Zihuatanejo websites, you might get a few to think twice about it.
