Wow! How nice to experience A NORMAL DAY finally after the winter tourist season and Carnaval and Semana Santa and a SOLAR ECLIPSE. It just gets so busy here sometimes that it's a relief when finally the crowds go home, the noise level drops, all the decorations get put away (well, almost), kids are back in school, and life returns to a semblance of what is normal for us here on the Costa Grande of Guerrero. Whew!

Today was another absolutely picture-postcard-perfect day. Clear blue skies, a light breeze, calm ocean water albeit cold for locals (visitors seem not to notice). Warmer weather is expected during the rest of the week with temps expected to reach 34°C this coming Friday and Saturday.

Hardly anyone out walking on the Paseo del Pescador this Tuesday evening. Restaurants were mostly empty. A game at the basketball court was the only visible entertainment. No dancers. No musicians playing. A normal small town. But for how much longer? The mayor just gave public notice today that he wants to draw up a new city development plan even though this is his final year in office. I seriously don't think he'll be satisfied until he's drowned the town, the hills and the bay under his cement.

Plenty of good restaurants are within easy walking distance. An easy place to relax and forget about the troubles and stress of the rest of the world.

Curious as to your expressed comments of the Mayor allegedly doing wrong by the Community ends when he leaves office?

Message cut short. Will the Mayor's vision of public works end with his term??

With Hizzoner's wife expected to succeed him, sounds like Señor Concreto will still be in business.

As Ironwood mentioned, his wife is currently the mayoral candidate for the PRI, the mayor's party, as if they were a dynasty. The party responsible for most of Mexico's corruption for the past 90 years or so. Zihuatanejo is one of their last bastions in the state of Guerrero. Their party has been rotundly rejected by most of Mexico for its blatant corruption, including what we know as La Guerra Sucia in Mexico, something that hits home here in Zihuatanejo. I knew the mayor's grandfather. I respected him even though he was also considered corrupt by many locals. Times were different, different practices were more acceptable/palatable, and we have never ever lived in a perfect world. But he also accepted criticism and DID THE RIGHT THING when it mattered. Unlike his grandson. The latter whom I don't trust to be making plans for downtown Zihuatanejo's development with the community's best interests at heart. The so-called public meetings have been historically nothing but theater, and the politicians have always seemed to do what's in their own best interests.

Specters of Revolution: Peasant Guerrillas in the Cold War Mexican Countryside by ALEXANDER AVIÑA is an excellent book about La Guerra Sucia.

I've preserved some of the reality of the Guerra Sucia in one of my weblogs.
https://zihuatanejo-ixtapa.blogspot.com/ It's also a good place to read where many, but not all, of my dire predictions from many years ago have come true. Most unfortunately.
