Wandering to Oaxaca in a matter of days. Well, 3 weeks. Sticking to downtown for a hotel.
Any advice on cool excursions or insights into culture or cuisine?
Always a fan of a watering hole with a proper bar that can make a proper cocktail.
Someone recommended La Cueva. Good restaurants? Mezcal memories? Titillating tapas? Live music? Bodacious bistros? Looking for the skinny. Growwwl.

You are going to visit the ruins at Monte Albán, yes?

Excellent! And have you ever tried fried crickets? They are called chapulines and are sold on every corner in Oaxaca. The local "Mexican pizza" dish called Tlayuda is not complete without a helping of chapulines.

Also, there are various artist villages in close proximity to Oaxaca that are worthy of day trips. One such village is San Martín Tilcajete. It is famous for its alebrijes which are fantastic creatures with vibrant colors. No doubt you have seen some for sale in other parts of México. However, it is unlikely you will see a greater assortment of these enchanting items anywhere else in the country.

Oaxaca is just magical!

Monte Alban is a must, visit early in the morning and check out the transportation. A hotel has the rights to the bus to and from, it's easy and inexpensive and how to do it. Tour the museum first.

If you are at all into plants, the ethnobotanic garden is right in centro behind a fabulous church turned into a museum. They give tours in English.

Other than that, stay in centro and absorb the great city!

Now we're talkin. Ethnobotany. My namesake Yando (Rios) was one of the best ayahuasca painters. Oaxaca sounds like my kinda place.

I agree with seeing Monte Alban, bring a hat and water and good walking shoes. There is a lot of stair climbing, some steps being irregular but all worth it. I went this past January and took a combi that gathered people from hotels and dropped us off and returned later maybe in 3 hrs. Your hotel can set you up. There are guided trips as well or you can pick up a guide at the entrance. The site is pretty well signed in english and I did not feel a guide was necessary, though I did have to ask a few nationals questions where there was no signage in English. If you have a Inapam card the actual entrance fee is waived.

Eating lunch at the mercado where they serve foot long tortillas with lots of meat and spice is a treat. The vendors compete to get every customer they can snag.

For a place to stay in Oaxaca I highly recommend Casa Colonial. Jane Robison, the owner, is an old friend of mine. Calle Miguel Negrete #105. Reservations @ casa-colonial.com or 951-516-5280 Centrally located and secure. Jane can recommend places to visit.

So much to do and see. There are Zapotec ruins in Mitla. On the way east from town, EL Tule, supposedly the largest or oldest tree in the world. There is also a calcified waterfall out that way and all three could be done in a day trip. There's also a town with weavers if you are into rugs or blankets. Heading south San Martin Tilcajete. The most famous and exquisite Alebrijhes are from the workshop of Jacobo and Maria Angeles. Definitely worth visiting. They talk about your physical and spirit body and the animal guides to the spirit that they carve. Santa Catarina Minas is nearby as well. Real Minero and Lalocura mezcals are located there. Both fantastic if you are into mezcal. I did an overnight trip south to San Jose del Pacifico up in the mountains. I did not partake, but magic mushrooms all over the town. Cool place with a really good Italian restaurant run by an Italian. Speaking of Italian, Mexita a ten minute cab ride from the centro is really good. The mercado Benito Juarez a few blocks south of the cathedral is worth a look - more great mezcals and nice woven bedspreads. You should go to Boulenc for lunch. On the square opposite to the cathedral and on the second floor is Tr3s 3istro. Good food, good service, good atmosphere. It's a wonderful town with many interesting museums as well.

Without digging up my old notes for place names, towns within an hour or two of Oaxaca Central specialize in green pottery, or in red pottery, or the beautiful black pottery, or in weaving, or those wonderful, weird Oaxaca wooden figurines. All have artisans displaying their skills. And don't forget the dozens of roadside stalls selling Oaxaca mezcal. The tree, El Tule, is worth seeing. There's a small church adjacent to the tree, where a wedding was taking place when we were there. The couple were fairly elderly, as were most of the guests. They came out of the church led by one of those charming, off-key small-town Mexico bands....a tuba, a trumpet, a saxophone, a drum ....... priceless!
In Oaxaca, we stayed at the budget, funky, Casa Arnel, recommended by Lonely Planet....an easy 10 or 15 minute walk from Centro.

A visit to one of the nearby villages where those colorful, whimsical, uniquely Oaxacan alebrijes are crafted is worthwhile. Behind-the-scenes tours of the workshops are available.
