This Friday morning was quite cool and refreshing for early risers in Zihuatanejo. There was also quite a spectacle in Zihuatanejo Bay as over 300 fishermen anxiously awaited the 8 o'clock pistol shot signaling the start of the XXXIX Torneo Internacional de la Pesca de Pez Vela. The bay roared to life as hundreds of marine motors all throttled up at the same time, racing out of the bay to reach good fishing areas and get their lines trolling in the water. This Saturday and Sunday mornings they'll leave at 7 o'clock.

Zihuatanejo's bay water temperature reached 28°C today before dipping back down to 27°C. Now's the best time for swimming, snorkeling and diving before the rains start. There's still a light presence of marea roja and algae blooms in the region, but it appears very mild and should dissipate soon.

The fishing tournament breathes a bit of life back into our local businesses during this slow time of year. Lots of families accompany many of the fishermen, and they visit our shops and restaurants. Every bit helps at this time of year, especially with the increasingly lower spending we've experienced by our visitors and tourists yearly since long before the pandemia due to image and promotion problems. I can only do so much, but I know many locals who are very grateful for my small contribution to our tourism industry. You and they all help keep me motivated.
