:anchor:¡Feliz Día de la Marina!:anchor:
This Saturday was the day we celebrate the men and women of Mexico's navy as well as the men and women of the sea including our fishermen. It's a big yearly celebration that started off with a few dozen swimmers swimming across the bay from Playa Principal next to the pier to Las Gatas and back. Something my wife has done in her younger years. She was also the first person to hug the first swimmer to arrive this year.

This Sunday Mexico holds its day of nationwide elections. Election day in Mexico is always held on the first Sunday in June in order to facilitate voter turnout. We will be voting for local, state and national officials including a new presidente, in this case likely to be Mexico's first presidenta. Because of the elections, the state government has declared ley seca for Saturday and Sunday, meaning no alcohol will be sold in stores or restaurants. We hope people will be respectful, but my experience living in tourist destination has taught me that many tourists seem to think they need to spend as much of their vacation as highly inebriated as possible, so I expect there will be a few wild and crazy guys and gals. Ni modo.

For those of you who are Mexican citizens and who have your credencial INE, here's how to locate the casilla where you can vote. Please do. Be aware that there will be some casillas known as casillas especiales where voters who are out of their district for one reason or another can vote, but only in the national elections. A few secciones will have 2 casillas, one for residents whose names are on local voting rolls, and the special casillas for tourists. So be careful you don't get in the wrong line and then find out you can't vote locally because you went to the casilla especial. Casillas especiales are identified by having "ESPECIAL" or similar after the sección number (example: Secc. 1621 ESP 1). Check the casilla identification poster that should be hanging in view at the polling place. One of the casillas especiales is in the plaza next to the museum in downtown Zihuatanejo. There should also be one in the commercial zone of Ixtapa. I'm not sure where else. My experience as a former presidente de casilla is that most people vote early, and the rest of the day there are no lines. Here are the locations of the casillas especiales:

The horses are off!
I think we will see an eco-friendly Jewish female PhD elected in the next hours. Maybe the waste management issues in Zihua will be given higher priority.

Although certainly of a high importance, my personal wish is that somehow the Mexican government starts to chip away at the level of violence. I believe the majority of Mexican citizens agree with this endeavor. A first task would be legalize marijuana at the Federal level. It would send a strong message to Washington and the rest of those who stubbornly hold onto the tragic myth that is the War On Drugs. And before any of you throw up your hands and exclaim, "But that won't stop the cartels," please know that I agree with you. It will take decades to marginalize the cartels. Nevertheless, we have to start somewhere. You got any better ideas other than the oft-quoted GOPutin Party threat of authorizing the U.S. military to invade northern Mexico to take out the cartels?

In any event, we wish the new female Mexican Presidenta the best of luck and success in her six-year term! Viva Mexico!

They have been talking about this shift in Marijuana scheduling for the longest time. Not sure what the remaining hurdle is. Interestingly pure THC(Marinol) was Schedule III but the much less potent marijuana plant was Schedule I for the longest time. Strange. Weird shit happens when you let dumb "True Believers" like Harry Anslinger become the maniacal Josef Goebbels of anti-pot propaganda.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration will move to reclassify marijuana as a less dangerous drug, The Associated Press has learned, a historic shift to generations of American drug policy that could have wide ripple effects across the country.

Her eco friendly credentials may be seriously challenged given Obrador s love of fossil fuels over alternatives.

I won’t comment here about Mexican politics, but my left-wing interest in Canadian politics is clear.

Unfortunately, even in Canada’s left parties, there is a lot of tempering of the long term interests of workrrs with capitalists’ short term economic interests.

In British Columbia, the minister responsible for climate change was executive director of the Sierra Club B.C. from 2009 to 2013. During his tenure as a cabinet minister, BC continued to advance the development of fossil fuel LNG and to use green hydroelectric power to support the LNG industries.

I did smile though at the following.

(Xóchitl) Galvez has also hinted that that oil-rich Mexico should invest more in renewable energy, saying earlier this year: “We haven’t done it because we are dumbasses.”

Mexico has huge potential for solar electric generation of electricity making it possible to mothball terrible polluters like Petacalco.

Petacalco power station

The Petacalco power complex has had significant negative impacts on human health, marine life, fisheries and agriculture in northwestern Guerrero state.

The Petacalco plant burns an average of 7 million tons of coal per year and has been described as one of the world's worst polluters.

Its annual emissions of carbon dioxide and mercury (over 15 million tons, and 711 tons, respectively) are the highest of any power plant in Mexico. In addition, it ranks second nationally in annual emissions of nitrous oxide (228 tons) and methane (152 tons), third in nitric oxide (over 24,000 tons), and fifth in sulfur dioxide (152 tons per year). Air and water pollution traceable to the plant have created multiple negative impacts for surrounding communities, including depletion of fisheries, loss of mangrove habitat, and high concentrations of coal ash and other particulates that threaten residents' health.

A good starting point for increased use of that electricity would be to start building electric vehicle infrastructure. Imagine if CFE were mandated to put DCFC electric vehicle charging stations at every cuota booth. Imagine if Pemex were mandated to put DCFC charging in every Pemex station.

I hope my concerns about Sheinbaum are misplaced.
