We woke to mostly cloudy skies and a nice light breeze in Zihuatanejo Bay after a light overnight rain. Though the sky looked threatening much of the day, it didn't rain until right around sunset. Temperatures seem milder with the cloud cover. The ocean was too cold for locals to swim today, though a few visitors didn't seem to notice.
But there weren't many visitors around. The streets and the beach seemed empty most of the day. This is a rough time of year for locals. A shame we have no other industry besides fickle tourism. A huge oversight (or shortsightedness) on the part of our elected officials.
Some small Portuguese Man'o'Wars have been reported in the area, so keep your eyes out in the water.
Haven't seen any turtle tracks on the downtown beach in about a month. Usually by this time of year they're arriving. I saw one nest with its dead eggs exposed where a turtle had placed them way too low on the beach and the waves washed away the sand, I believe because of the bright lights along the waterfront that disorient them. But the local office of Ecología keeps ignoring me and others when this is brought to their attention. Bummer for the sea turtles.

Be careful for what you wish for. I'm in Atlantic Beach outside of Jacksonville Florida where my wife grew up. The locals here lament that there is no more summer offseason. Every day, there are more tax refugees coming from places like New York and New Jersey. Housing prices have doubled here in the last five years, meaning it's tough to be a tradesperson, live at the beach and surf when the waves are good.

Yes, I'm an unrepentant former Floridian thankful for living there during Florida's better days before much of the state got ruined by developers and the onslaught of snowbirds moving there. I can empathize with what the locals feel. But at least there are alternative industries for them to work in, so they don't have to depend on tourism. A lesson learned in the 60's and 70's in the Sarasota-Bradenton area back when I lived there. Unfortunately, in all of Florida's city and county governments it appears their councilpersons have never met a developer whose money they didn't like. Now most all the coastal communities have to put up with overcrowded roadways year round. It was great back in the 70's!
