We lost our dear long-time friend Isabel Fortuna this morning who passed away at her home in Ixtapa. She did it her way and lived the life she wanted.
I first met Izzy here with her then-husband Jim back in 1974. We spent a lot of time together, including when her boys Eric and Scott came to visit. For a while she was our neighbor in La Ropa. Spent many nights back then with her and Jim and other friends dancing to Temptations, Kool & The Gang and lots of other good music at Bill & Eileen's place on Juan N. Álvarez street near where Garrobo's is. She was a good friend of my mother's, and they looked after each other as the years went by. She was one of the original Gringas de La Ropa, and later one of the original Owenettes. Somewhere I've got some old photos of us all celebrating and dancing at Owen's back in '89. Izzy was a hoot, and she had many good stories to tell.
I don't have any other details at this moment. I'll post them when I find anything out.

Heaven just received a new bright star.
Isabel (Hostess extraordinaire of Coconuts) is loved by scores of scores of people including myself and my beautiful wife, Carmen.
Keep smiling, Isabel, it's only a dream.

We always remember her gracious, welcome on our first visit back around the turn of the century. When we peeked inside Coconuts we tried to beat a hasty retreat as we were wearing beach shorts and tourist tops; but she quickly encouraged us to come in and feel comfortable. It’s remained one of our favorite places in Zihuatanejo, only missing her at the door. She was like Lupita in being someone I wish I could be more like.
