Taxi's

After the catalytic converter on our car clogged, we realized that we needed to do some maintenance. So, for about three weeks, we didn't have a car much. Think mechanic, transmission shop, electro mechanic, exhaust shop, body shop. We used to use combi's all the time and taxi's too.

Many people recommend a particular driver. We decided to just flag a taxi as needed, at the grocery store, in front of our house, in town. Just random drivers, never the same one twice. We probably had 15 taxi rides.

Every single taxi was very clean inside and out. Every driver at least greeted us and spoke a little. Some cars didn't seem to be completely solid, but all got us to where we were going very safely. A couple had AC, didn't charge extra, but most didn't. GET THIS: Every single taxi charged us correctly!!!! No one said they didn't have change, everything was perfect!!!!

The combi's are great. Very inexpensive and still, when you get on everyone speaks. All ages, everyone. What a great thing!! We rode several different routes, all were good.

So, visitors, don't hesitate to take either type of vehicle, or feel that you need to wait for a particular driver. They were all very good.

Love this little tale of positivity. Do things out of your comfort zone, meet new people. Spread those pesos around!

Good info! Gracias. That's what happens when you become a Mexican citizen. It's like ¡MAGIA!

I just love using the combi's. You get to practice your horrible Spanish. After the, "Buenas tardes," I will say, "Me encanta su ciudad. Es un paraíso!" Some will smile and respond and strike up a conversation. Others will look at me with that, "Uh, oh. Another crazy gringo," look and maybe eek out a meek, "Gracias." It's always an adventure!

We have never had a car in Zihua. Public transportation is so inexpensive and reliable that we've never felt the need!

We had a car in Zihua for a time, but leaving it parked for many months was not good for it, so we sold it. For a while we used cabs and public transportation until we met taxi driver Pedro Moreno. We live here full time, and a car is a necessity when you have three large dogs that have to have at least annual vet visits. It is also a luxury we enjoy having.

I have found during this time of year when fares are slow the price always seems to be correct. This is not the case December through April.

This is even more true going between Ixtapa and Z.

You are correct Midalake.Also, the better you Spanish, the closer to correct the fare will be.

Good story, thanks for sharing it. We have been without a car for nearly 3 years now. We have found the combi's and taxis to work very well for us, and even know taxi drivers who are comfortable allowing us to take our pets to the vet when needed. While I have my issues with the way many of the taxi drivers behave (i.e. not following official rates and using illegal tactics to prevent people from using their preferred and legal airport transportation) the system overall works very well for getting around the local area.
