¡Muy Feliz Día de la Independencia Mexicana! :vivamexico:

I'm happy to report that my cynical prediction of Zihuatanejo being overrun by drunks with fireworks this weekend didn't pan out. Barely heard any fireworks or cuetes at all. Not that there weren't any drunks. They were throwing beer cans at each other (with beer still in them) on Playa Principal this morning, and as usual the beach was a wreck from their nightlong borrachera. I felt bad for the barrenderos who didn't know what to do with them so they took a well-timed coffee break.

The military and the charros looked great in today's parade. Lots of children dressed up as Héroes de la Independencia Mexicana filled in the spaces between the military and the charros, accompanied by their family members who are a parade unto themselves. Cute as they are, they always remind me how overpopulated we've become.

The predicted rain never showed up. It barely sprinkled for a brief spell, and that was it for us in downtown Zihuatanejo. So at least the roads weren't wet as inebriated drivers tried to get wherever they were going. As usual, a contingent of boombox cars passed by in parade fashion late last night, all playing different "songs" at full blast with no problem at all from the absent police forces.

Even more tourists finally showed up, but not many with money to spend on anything except lodging, food and drinks. The waterfront restaurants were never very busy except for La Porteña, which is always busy. Though the line of cars was long leaving Zihuatanejo for the Autopista Siglo XXI this afternoon, I suspect many students won't be in classes this Tuesday like they should be.

Our weather remains absolutely picture-postcard-perfect! A bit warm with the humidity, but nothing a hammock in the shade with the ocean breeze and a cool refreshment couldn't remedy.

Un charro demuestra su talento con la riata frente al templete del alcalde durante el desfile para honrar el Día de la Independencia Mexicana. Los charros siempre son la parte más esperada de los desfiles locales.

We heard very few this year. Nothing like previous years. A huge relief for our dog and us.
