We generally tip 15% at restaurants, and only in a taxi if they do something extra.

Grocery store situation is so bad currently, we use the self check.

I tip 20% everywhere in restaurants. Cab drivers only get tipped when they help with luggage.

A while ago I heard a guy from some restaurant group talking on the radio about the current situation with tipping prompts everywhere.
He explained that generally a tip is left in recognition of the good service you recieve. He said now let's imagine 2 couples going into a restaurant, sitting at 2 separate tables. One couple orders a $20 bottle of wine, the server brings it, opens & pours it. The second couple orders a $100 bottle of wine, the server brings it, opens & pours it.
So going with your 20%, the first couple leaves a $4 tip. The second couple leaves a $20 tip. Why? The service was exactly the same in each case.
He argued that basing tips on a percentage should not be done. It simply encourages inflated prices to reap bigger tips, particularly where staff is underpaid.
On another note, a friend of mine walks into a restaurant with a 15% tip to start, then depending on service, the amount can go up or down according to the experience.

Hola
Remember whatever you decide to tip, don't tip on tax. If your bill total comes to 25 dollars, but there is 5 dollar taxes added, just tip on the 20 dollars. If you want to tip 20%, hit the 18% button

Having worked in the service industry way back in the sixties for US$13.50 per day, tips really helped. I can afford leaving 20%, so that's what I do.

Minimum wages for service jobs in many parts of the US ought to be embarrassment in a civil society. Employers profiteer from the exploitation of low-paid workers. I expect that many of us have see a copy of the notice one restaurateur posted imploring customers to tip generously because the service staff couldn’t live on their wages.

Imagine, “Please pay my employees. I don’t want to.”

The other side of that coin is that when I worked as a waiter on Sanibel Island I made much more in tips each night than any restaurant could afford to pay, usually over $100 a night back in the late 70's, which was damn good money back then. So I could work 3 or 4 nights a week and go to college during the day and still make enough money to live on Sanibel Island. Could've made more as a bartender, but then I'd've had to put up with too many drunks instead of just hungry tourists.

Yes, I tip differently at expensive restaurants, but the wait staff still knows they are appreciated. Same goes at incredibly inexpensive places. Always take care of your waiter or waitress.

The service industry put me through university as well. One thing I never do is leave a tip on a debit or credit card because here in Canada, the tax man tries to make service employees pay income tax on their tips. I find this really nasty, as sometimes there are no tips at all, or sometimes a 'regular' will bring you home baking or produce from their garden. A tip, in my mimd, is a gift from the patron that they can choose to give, or not. Tax THAT, Jack!!!!
I may pay by card, but make sure I have cash to leave a tip so there is no paper trail.

Untaxed Tipping? Detriment to Workers

This is a two-edged sword.

Untaxed tip income is also not income for employment insurance purposes, workers compensation benefit purposes, and for Canada pension plan purposes. Both EI and and WCB benefits are pretty common in the seasonal and/or intermittent service industries. Having untaxed income might be a matter of short-term gain for long-term pain.

On the other hand, untaxed tips benefit employers who can pay lower wages and avoid paying their portion of premiums for EI and CPP.
