Driving to Morelia

Hello all, looking for any fresh info on the drive/road conditions to Morelia. I Will be visiting in mid-December and always wanted to explore the area.
Also, any recommendations for a reputable, read, non-insurance scam, car rental company? Your time would be very much appreciated.
