The Costa Grande of Guerrero awoke this Thursday to alarming news of violence between rival criminal gangs in Técpan de Galeana, the municipio just south of our neighbor Petatlán. Due to this and other circumstances, I strongly discourage anyone from traveling down the coast beyond Papanoa for the time being until things simmer down.

We didn't hardly see a cloud in the sky all day here in Zihuatanejo. Huracán Kristy, now a Cat 5, seems to have sucked them all away. It was another picture-postcard-perfect day in Zihuatanejo and the region. The waves have picked up a bit as another mar de fondo event affects our coast. Not too bad in the bay, but along the open coast they can be dangerous for inexperienced swimmers

Not sure what happened to the folks who were sifting the sand to clean it at Playa Principal. They seem to have given up after only a couple of days of working a small area in front of the museum.

I'm still seeing turtle tracks on the beach in the mornings, but many don't lay eggs, and most of the nests are barely above the waterline instead of high on the beach as they used to do before the paving over of much of the high part of the beach and the placement of bright lighting aimed at the beach under the previous mayor. Apparently a nest hatched overnight but the turtles were disoriented and roaming aimlessly on the beach exhausted instead of being able to find the ocean via the horizon, again disoriented from the bright lights. This keeps happening over and over. Not sure why the city ignores the problem.

Don't miss Antonio "Toño" Urbina Bello offering some of his music, poetry and books at the Casa de Cultura this Friday at 5PM. Toño is one of Zihuatanejo most talented poets, songwriters and writers. Entry is free.

[image]El Refugio de Potosí is a center for wildlife conservation and environmental education. Among its attractions, it features a fully reconstructed sperm whale skeleton (the only one in Mexico), an observation tower, a wheelchair accessible footpath for observing local flora and fauna, and a butterfly pavilion. Located near the beach on the road to Barra de Potosí. Perfect for the entire family.

A person I know was supposed the see a physician from Acapulco in Zihuatanejo this Monday. The appointment was cancelled because it was deemed too high risk for the physician to travel because of reported violence in both Técpan and Coyuca de Benitez.

We are coming up to the Days of the Dead, a time when many people travel to visit cemeteries where departed are buried. I wonder whether this will limit peoples’ ability to commune as usual.

It most definitely will. No matter what measures the federal government takes, the municipios have no professional police of their own, and their public security remains in the hands of people in offices hundreds of kilometers away. A recipe for failure. The events are national news, and I'm already seeing people decide not to visit Guerrero for their vacations. A damn shame, but it's the same old problem that politicians keep trying to sweep under the rug. Sheinbaum insists she's not going to have a war on the narcos, totally ignoring the terrorist organizations that they now represent thanks to decades of insufficient measures and thanks in large part to corruption.

Hmmm. We've been thinking of jumping in the car and heading down from Canada. Time to reconsider?

We had a house in Zihua, went down twice a year but never considered driving; we flew down. We had a car for a short while but sold it. Parking and traffic are a drag and we ended up using a local guy for transportation. The added benefit is that one can enjoy the views enroute. I highly recommend Pedro Moreno: pedro.91477@gmail.com or 672-119-2398. He's a nice guy, drives carefully and speaks perfect English. Another good reason to use his services: he has a daughter with a chronic medical condition, requiring regular trips to see a doctor in Morelia, which costs quite a bit.

Tecpan and Coyuca are south of Zihuatanejo, so you wouldn’t be going there to get to Zihuatanejo anyway.

Most violence in Mexico, as in Canada, is within groups, between “bad guys”, or between police and bad guys. That is not to say there is never “collateral damage” to uninvolved people, but that is minimal. In this recent violence there were no deaths of “uninvolved combatants”.

Actually there was at least one, a truck driver. No idea why they killed him. His truck was used to block one of the roads. His death was totally unnecessary and unjustifiable. But 17 of the bad guys from GNG were killed, which is fine with most folks. But it sure looks like the government was protecting the gang the GNG was coming after, Los Granaderos, since I don't believe any of them were killed, injured or arrested. The 15 people arrested were 10 Guatemalans, 1 Salvadoran and 4 Mexicans.

I read that he was missing. I didn’t read the update that his remains had been found. I wonder whether he resisted the theft of the tractor-trailer. I figure if someone is brandishing a gun, they are probably willing to use it. I can’t think of anything I own that I value more than my life.

Then again, it is possible they simply shot him before taking the semi.

Agreed, but we'd have to run the guantlet through Sonora, Sinaloa, Nayarit, Jalisco, Colima and Michoacan - each of which has their own history of violence, past and present - before getting into Guerrero, which is now reportedly competing with Guanajuato for the distinction of being Mexico's most violent state.
I realize I'm talking myself into leaving the car at home. We've driven down 8 or 9 times previously, but the violence seems far more out of control now.

I know you're not referring to the climate. We usually go via Nogales, unless we've gone via Baja and ferry to Topolobampo.

Nope!

Bad combination of Jefes being popped, opportunity to be new Jefe, and many upset with recent major bust.

Does not help the bust was close to Zih.

Finger pointing quickly becomes Finger pulling.

Worse case for the area would be if someone flipped on ACA.

The Guatas being caught is a new wrinkle unless they were armed mules.

Hopefully it cools off.
