Puente para Día de la RevoluZIHón
After enjoying a refreshing night for sleeping with the soft music of the waves in Zihuatanejo's bay, we awoke to a cielo brumoso this Thursday morning. The breeze kicked in later in the morning and helped keep everyone comfortable. But by the end of the day the breeze died and it looks like we're in for a stuffy night.
But all the forecasts coincide that by next Tuesday we are likely to see some significant rains from a tropical disturbance. Good thing, because the seasonal dry period of 2025 is forecast to be severe since we hardly got any rain this year. The one good storm we had this year isn't enough to keep our aquifers charged enough for our current population, much less a population expected to continue growing as the entire coast seems to be getting overdeveloped without any real thought for water supply, wastewater treatment or the future. I've seen this movie before. So go easy on the water, please.
The tourists arrived early for the long weekend for Día de la Revolución Mexicana as we celebrate the unfinished revolución that began in 1910. Downtown was bustling this Thursday morning as throngs of visitors apparently arrived a day early. The official day of rest this year is Monday even though the actual day of observance is Wednesday the 20th. There will be a parade downtown at 8:00 A.M. either next Monday or Wednesday morning. I'll have to confirm that as soon as it's announced.
Tucked away on the northern side of Marina Ixtapa in a very peaceful and secure part of Ixtapa are some extremely comfortably condos. Ixtapa Paqus Properties offers luxurious vacation rental properties in an exclusive residential area with panoramic ocean views and access to pools, beach club, tennis and golf.

Thank you Robb for reminding us all how serious the water situation is in the Zihua area. Capaz said yesterday that they expect to be only able to deliver water under normal circumstances until February or March. Only the Rio Ixtapa had any significant aquifer recharging this season of the sources Capaz uses.

I keep suggesting to the municipal government that they do what Sanibel Island, Florida did in the 70's when it faced a very similar situation, and their local government instituted a moratorium against the construction of new multiple-dwelling developments such as condos and hotels until it could get its infrastructure up to speed. A huge success for the island. Here we seem to be going entirely in the opposite direction for reasons of ignorance, avarice and political gain. A damn shame. It'll cost much more to fix later than it would to upgrade now.

Thank you for the new Trump descriptor: Avarice.

Water scarcity
It is alarming to me how few people seem to be paying attention to the water situation in Zihuatanejo. There seems to be no campaign for water conservation or efforts to increase storage of the water we do get from rains. Thank you for highlighting it Rob.

Water scarcity
Definitely time to start publicly discussing water conservation measures like reducing vehicle washing and refilling private pools.

Water scarcity
Perhaps it's time for a desalination plant.

Reducing vehicle washing? I’m not opposed to that, but I have two observations.
1. Elsewhere where there are issues of water scarcity, car washes are required to recycle the water they use. That could save a lot of water.
2, Even more importantly grass lawns ought to be prohibited. I live in Troncones. Some of the properties here and in La Majahua have expansive lawns. I could wash my camioneta every day for two months with the water poured on some of those lawns in a day.
I don’t have to “name names”. Just look at Google Earth to see the swaths of green.
Water scarcity
Consider it preaching to the choir>
Water scarcity
I have often thought of a desalination plant but the energy costs are huge. Zihua would need the resources to build a huge solar farm to power that. Then there is the more obvious option of building a damn on one of the more consistent rivers that flow down from the mountains. Both require serious capital investment.

We've heard, over the years, that Zihua's "pipa" water comes from Pantla. It would be interesting to know if it comes from a river, or from an aquafer.
Water scarcity
I occasionally haul my own from a noria in Cocoyol. Several different pipa companies haul from there. Car Wash Ixtapa hauls from Agua Correra . there are many different aquifers being heavily used.
Water scarcity - AWG
Perhaps it's time for a desalination plant.
I keep hoping for “affordable” AWG (atmospheric water generation) even if I had to stretch my money as I did for my PHEV here in Mexico.
There is a lot of water in the air here. I feel it every morning and evening when I go for my walks.
It’s just a matter of extracting it from the air affordably.
