President-elect Donald Trump on Monday promised massive hikes in tariffs on goods coming from Mexico, Canada and China starting on the first day of his administration, a policy that could sharply increase costs for American businesses and consumers.
The move, Trump said, will be in retaliation for illegal immigration and “crime and drugs” coming across the border.
“On January 20th, as one of my many first Executive Orders, I will sign all necessary documents to charge Mexico and Canada a 25% Tariff on ALL products coming into the United States, and its ridiculous Open Borders,” Trump posted on his Truth Social platform. “This Tariff will remain in effect until such time as Drugs, in particular Fentanyl, and all Illegal Aliens stop this Invasion of our Country!”

In other words, “l am incompetent at controlling the US border, so I will punish Americans by increasing the prices of what they buy, until leaders who are more capable than I am do something I am incompetent at doing.”
I have two “aside” comments.
This is to apply to “ALL products” coming into the United States.
1. I wonder how Trump intends to put a 25% tariff on fentanyl coming into the US.
2. I wonder what the Canadian Trump promoters in oil-producing Alberta and auto industry Ontario think about 25% tariffs.

Not sure about the Canadian Auto Industry, but with the Conservatives nationally at 43% (+-4%) and Liberals at 23% (+-3%), I'm pretty sure people in the energy in industry in Sask. and Alta. are more concerned with the new production cap recently put on by the liberals and also just trying to hang on until hopefully, Canada has a government who respects Canadian oil. Then they will worry about the tariffs. I might be wrong, but I have a feeling that is how they feel. I hope this helps your question.

There is no “production cap”. Period.
Canada has emissions reductions plans for various sectors.
2030 Emissions Reduction Plan – Sector-by-sector overview
The petroleum industry argued against a production cap. It said it could reduce GHG emissions through more efficient production, through reducing methane leaked, through technology including carbon capture and storage. The federal government said “OK. No production caps. Reduce emissions your way.
Now the industry is saying it cannot achieve the emissions cap based on how it said it could. The federal government is saying the emissions cap stands.
The petroleum industry is saying it would choose to reduce emissions by reducing production rather than any other way.
The only “production cap” is the one the industry chooses.

I'm sorry, I thought you were wondering what people thought working in the Petroleum industry who would have supported Trump instead of Harris, not just what you thought. My mistake. People in the industry think that a reduction in emissions is just like a production cap by the way. Of course they may be wrong, but I would bet that it is how they are thinking. Since you appeared to be wondering. Have a nice day.

Just so people realize the absolute stupidity and absurdity of the Insurrectionist's tariffs threat, Mexico is the USA's biggest trading partner, surpassing China and Canada last year. One of the benefits of T-Mec has been employing people and reducing the pressure for undocumented immigration from Mexico. It isn't Mexico's fault that the USA empowers a violent black market of organized criminals or that it supplies them with firearms to carry out their violent attacks in Mexico. It isn't Mexico's fault that tens of millions of U.S. citizens want to use stupidly banned recreational substances, creating a multi-billion dollar a year market. So the threat of raising tariffs is already causing prices to rise in the USA, surprising cult followers, as are the extremely poor choices the Insurrectionist is naming as heads of the military and other important U.S. institutions. But Putin and other U.S. adversaries are tickled pink to see the Insurrectionist weakening the USA.

If the promises of mass deportation and massive tariffs are realized, we will all be poorer across the globe. Inflation will rise dramatically and not fewer but more migrants will attempt the perilous crossing into the United States as their economies suffer disproportionately. I have always been very optimistic about the future of the United States, the "shining city on the hill" as Ronald Reagan called us. Now, I have never been more fearful. Rob is correct. Putin and Xi are laughing out loud.

Oh high and mighty wise one, illuminate us so that I and others with my failings might not remain so ignorant. Forgive us lowly born who don't see the wisdom of supporting the policies of the Insurrectionist and, what is it, the 8-time bankrupted inheritor of daddy's silver spoon. You have the floor.

I am not one that normally gets into these frays, in all this tarrif stuff I have never seen a reference to electricity. There are still negotiations going on with the Columbia River treaty but from what I have read most of the power generated goes south to the west coast. As most the power projects in Quebec an Labrador feed the US east coast. Would that not be a 25% increase in the market dependant electricity produced? We are in for interesting times.

After several of Canada's provincial premiers embarrassed themselves by running around like headless chickens, wringing their hands at the prospect of Trump's tariffs, they all got together with the Prime Minister to plan strategy. Hopefully, cooler heads prevailed. Part of the game plan unfolded today, when Trudeau went to Mar-a-Lago for dinner with Herr Trump. Hopefully,Trudeau didn't go cap-in-hand.
Not surprising, Alberta's thuggish premier has announced she intends to attend Trump's inauguration.
