Mexican fútbol fans enjoyed an exciting semifinal game Sunday night of the Mexican league between Cruz Azul and América, with América eking out a win 4-3 in the final moments of the game thanks to a penalty kick. Monterrey and América will play their final match on Thursday Dec. 12, Día de Guadalupe, at 8 P.M. Just to make Dec. 12 even more interesting. Here in downtown Zihuatanejo shouts of ¡GOOOOOOOL! could be heard all over town each time one of the teams scored. Unlike U.S. football, these athletes play non-stop for 45 minutes, take a 15-minute break, then play another 45 minutes of non-stop action. No interruptions for commercials every few minutes, no stopping the clock every few seconds, no time outs, no silly and quite tiresome game clock nonsense, and no thousands of convoluted and confusing rules. And unlike U.S. football, in which the players neither touch the ball with their feet nor play with an actual ball, they actually use their feet to move an actual ROUND ball. Imagine that! :stirpot:

Our mild weather with refreshing nights and sunny days continues. A shame there seemed to hardly be any visitors around today. That should all change this coming weekend when the region should start filling up with tens of thousands of visitors who will be crowding our beaches, streets and restaurants until January 9th or so. Expect it to be crowded and loud with lots of spontaneous fireworks during the nights. We're still getting people who normally would go to Acapulco but can't because of the lack of available lodgings due to the damage from hurricanes Otis and John, so it's likely not only to be more crowded but also much louder than normal. Oh boy. :-|

A whale shark provided a surprise treat for snorkelers the other day at Playa Manzanillo. A reminder that the beach and the coastline should be protected and preserved, not privatized and developed into a skyscraper hotel with a boat pier. Another friend who was showing tourists around Zihuatanejo's bay had a wonderful surprise when they came across a humpback whale with its baby near the mouth of the bay.

[image]Speaking of whales, El Refugio de Potosí is a center for wildlife conservation and environmental education. Among its attractions, it features a fully reconstructed sperm whale skeleton (the only one in Mexico), an observation tower, a wheelchair accessible footpath for observing local flora and fauna, and a butterfly pavilion. Located near the beach on the road to Barra de Potosí. Perfect for the entire family.

Do these athletes also moonlight as soap opera actors? Lot of injury acting on that field by a bunch of girlie boys, they take it a little too far. Seen Las Águalas twice, once in Estadio Azteca and once in Pachuca. Love the passion of the fans, totally different experience than American football.

They are hoping for the referee to call a foul. Yes, it has become something of a tradition to see who earn the Oscar for the Best Imitation of an Actual Injury.

Some are pretty good, and if they can get a call in their favor while also giving their teammates a chance to catch their breath, all the better.

I have watched foot ball but cannot understand why all the whining about injuries that seemingly are nothing. These guys should play hockey where players run into each other at speeds of 30 KM per hour and stop pucks traveling between 80 and 100 KM's per hour then they would have something to whine about

While some injuries are hyped, many aren't, and it takes a while to recover when someone stomps on your achilles heel or butts your head since they aren't puss¡es and don't wear helmets and padding all over their body, only their shins.

Hockey's a "game" for masochists. Fútbol remains the most popular sport in the world. ;-)

Ha! Girlie boys! A U.S. football player collapses and has to sit out a play or two after running the length of the football field one time. These guys and gals run up and down the field like it was nothing for 45 minutes non-stop, and in Mexico City where the air is thin that's even more amazing. THAT'S an ATHLETE!

Must've been fun at Estadio Azteca. A monster of a stadium! Good for you!

Similar to the amount of punches thrown by a lightweight vs a heavyweight but they cannot stand toe to toe. In hockey they stopped this acting by calling diving penalties. I was too little for football so I played baseball and futbol, not good starting futbol season in baseball shape. I watch my taxi friend play futbol in the taxi league most trips, after 5 minutes most are pretty dead. Not an easy sport for the past their prime athletes. Can’t call them old as that would make me ancient.

Same with the older guys who play basketball at the Cancha. I don't know how they do it.
