La Batalla de la SobrevivenZIHa
I was heartbroken this morning to discover dead and dying baby turtles on Playa Principal. After seeing a woman photographing one at the water's edge, I followed the tracks and found the nest along with several others struggling but extremely tired and thin baby turtles. When I dug down to try to find more and help them, I discovered that the sand was so hardpacked as to almost be like cement. I spent over half an hour just trying to open up their nest to see if there were more still trying to reach the surface. It was amazing that any had been able to dig their way through the hardpacked sand. Apparently, they had been at it for days and that's why they were so wafer thin and exhausted. The reason the sand was so hard is that it was where the municipal government had stupidly allowed a beach soccer tournament to occur during turtle nesting and hatching season. I dug down to where I found the eggshells along with several bodies full of maggots of more dead baby turtles, finally calling it quits when it was obvious there were no more living baby turtles. Nothing but tragedy.
We still have an incredible amount of visitors here, and the beaches were again overflowing with families. It was the same on all the beaches. At the end of the day it was hard to walk towards the pier because there were so many people returning from the pier but walking without watching where they going. Several times I found myself having to block Lupita from the oncoming flow of people not watching where they were walking.
I find the reactions of folks walking through swooping fruit bats at night along the Paseo del Pescador to be amusing. The bats feed on the figs on the amate trees, and they swoop and dive through them over the heads of passersby. Amazingly, some visitors are so oblivious to their surroundings they don't notice them, especially folks lost in their smartphones, but others, especially young women, practically have panic attacks at the sight of them and need reassurance to continue walking along the Paseo. It's absolutely fascinating how well the bats can maneuver around the moving people with their natural radar. I love'em!
