City Folk and Mother Nature
A few years ago, I did the same with a tiny turtle hatchling. A few seconds after releasing it, a frigate bird swooped down and scooped it up. Life is hard.....
We city folk have this Disneyfied view of Mother Nature as a benevolent giver of life. The reality is that Mother Nature is a neglectful and sometimes abusive parent who doesn’t care if any individual lives or dies.
I saw an aphorism that read something like, “You are dying and the universe doesn’t care.” I take the point to be that if we want better lives for ourselves and others, it is up to each of us to create that better life. The universe doesn’t care what our lives are like.
