Shirt etiquette?

Was wondering what the standard is for men not wearing shirts while shopping in Centro areas. I was advised it was considered etiquette for a man to wear a shirt while shopping but in 40 years vacationing Zihuat I’ve never been told this. Felt embarrassed. Thank you.

If you're not on the beach, please don't walk around as if you were.

We live here and agree that the lack of shirts is not cool. He is shirtless on the beach and inside our compound. If he has to get something from someone at the door, he puts his shirt on.

My pet peeve, and it hasn't been bad this year. Males and especially females who go to the grocery store in a bathing suit without a cover over it. I finally started confronting them and asking them if they would go to their neighborhood store dressed like this. As they gasp, I say that this is MY neighborhood grocery store and I am insulted by their behavior.

Probably shouldn't do it, but....

Having be raised in Europe, I learned that one should always be dressed properly in public and that one never wears a hat indoors. After living in the States for 62 years, it still makes my toes curl when I go to a restaurant, and I see guys, wearing baseball caps, shoveling food into their mouths.

A hat may bother some, lack of a dinner jacket and tie may bother others. I just try not to embarrass my wife but the caps at steakhouses do drive her crazy. Things change as to what is acceptable, I certainly do not want to go back to wearing a tie at work.

I wouldn’t stress too much about it. Some places just have different standards, but if you’ve never been told before, it’s probably just a one-off. Just throw on a shirt next time, and you’ll be fine.

When I see men who don't remove their baseball caps inside magnificent cathedrals, it's difficult not to punch 'em in the face. They either don't know how disrespectful it is or they don't care.

Assuming God exists, he'd probably be displeased if you beat the crap out of someone in a church.

I think the short answer is, “Look around.”

Are 99% of people dressed similarly? You’re probably complying with etiquette. Are you one of 1% or 3% or 5%? You are probably not complying with the expected standard.

If you are naked in the mercado you are not complying with etiquette. If you are clothed at a nude beach you are not complying with etiquette.

Many years ago I worked as a gardener. A prospective client asked me, “Do you know what a weed is?”

I said “It doesn’t matter whether it is a dandelion or an orchid, if it is growing where you don’t want it, it is a weed”.

I got the work.

Don’t be a weed.

A little deodorant goes a long way too. B-)

Are you from Montana where camo hats and sunglasses on the brim are considered mandatory?

We live in La Noria, home of LOTS of fishermen and lancheros. Shirts, shoes and colorful language etiquette are different this side of the puente. It's funny to me seeing men (including my husband) put on their shirt as they're crossing the bridge (puente) heading towards the pier/parking lot. And vice-versa. Just pay attention to what others, locals are doing.
