combi and car rental

Is it possible to take a combi to Troncones? or to the mayan ruins near Penas I think that's the location? or is it best to rent a car, if so from where? airport the best deals? any companies to avoid?
some places to consider driving to if we rent a car for a few days. We're thinking Acapulco worth it?

Also, looking for cheap bike wheel tubes (26 inch wheels) as we've been doing some mountain biking and the thorns just love us to bits. So too the mosquitos at night as we are staying close to the forest reserve.

Any place to rent small sailboats (14ft or so)? I noticed club med has them but they want 1300mx per person which includes access to all their stuff plus a meal. But, they seem pretty booked up most days.

We have always used Pedro Moreno for transportation. He's a nice guy and speaks perfect English. 672-119-2398 or pedro.91477@gmail.com

Yes to Troncones, search this site for the details.

They are NOT Mayan ruins. No, no combi.

Acapulco is a minimum of 4 hours each way, and often the road is blocked for hours to days with protestors. Not a great place to visit at this time.

There are several bike shops in Zihuatanejo, Google them.

Club Med Ixtapa is the most kid friendly location in the chain. Think you found the only place that a sailboat can be rented. The Hobie's on la Ropa are "rented" but they go with you for the sail.

We would avoid driving in Acapulco like the plague. We drove thousands of km all over much of Mexico in 2006 and Acapulco was, by far, the worst place to drive. Couldn't wait to get out. And I learned to drive in Montreal.....not for the faint of heart.

Any places to rent scooters or motorbike around ixtapa?

There is a small shop on the alley way Hermenegildo Galeana right downtown. I only rented there once many years ago. The price was way too high and the scooter was of very low quality. In addition, the proprietor is surly and unfriendly. Pass by the place often. Won't ever do business with him again.

I have often thought of seeing how much it cost to rent a storage location for a Honda scooter. There is a Honda dealership on Avenida Jose Maria Morelos Y Pavon downtown close to the Mercardo Municipal. However, the combis will take you pretty much wherever you want to go so it just doesn't make sense.

Good luck!

That surly guy is one of my wife's oldest friends, Prieto Rodríguez. I don't believe he's still renting scooters. But he sells some good spirits and has some great stories to tell.

There is a place in Ixtapa that rents scooters. He rents them out of his restaurant across from Intercam. Same corner as the laundromat. Contact: Dan. WhatsApp: 755-127-4925. We have had friends use them twice. Reasonably priced and good condition.

thanks!

will definitely check that out as its pretty close to where we are staying. We like the combis but we also like the challenge and adventure of just going out on a scooter anyplace anytime anywhere (with limits of course).
(we did columbia on a scooter, that was a challenge esp the round-bouts)

Is it possible to take a combi to Troncones?

People who live in Troncones do it every day.

You take a micro in Zihuatanejo that has “La Union” painted on the windshield. Tell the driver you want to get off at Troncones. The micros can get very crowded. Unless you get on at the very beginning, you might be standing the whole way.

When they drop you off, cross the highway (carefully) and walk about 500 metres south on the old highway. Wait there for a combi. I did that for years until I finally bought a vehicle last year.

The last time I did it, the fare for the micro was something like M$30 and for the combi was $20.

took a few combis already to playa linda with the dog, very packed on the way back as the workers get off work. And, to playa larga with the dog catching connections in Zihua. The bus driver at playa larga wasn't going to let us on with the dog though until we showed him it could sit. Everyone ended up calling our dog a mexican perro cause it just slept the whole bus ride. Other than that we love the combis. Cost us around 15 peso to get to play linda and around 40 to get to play larga.
We're pondering taking the dog to Troncones as I'm not sure if dogs are allowed on the beach there?

we want to rent a scooter just to head out anywhere and check out some random places. Scooters are a blast. When in columbia we went everywhere on a scooter.

No problem on the beaches of Troncones with your furry family member. They only ask that you be respectful of others and that you clean up after him.

I take my dog for walks on beaches in Troncones every day.

Differentiate between combis and micros. Combis are usually a van or a VW minibus. They usually have seating around the perimeter with an open space in the centre.

A micro is like a small bus. The seats are typically in 6 to 8 rows and are very tight. They make coach class airplane seats look like first class seats. I am 5’9” and my knees are jammed. I am 170 pounds and the seats are tight. Typically the single aisle is packed with people who are standing, sometimes for 30 minutes or more, hunched over due to the low ceiling. Sometimes one of those people is me.

I would take my 11 kilogram dog on a combi. I would consider myself disrespectful if I took my dog on a crowded micro as goes between Zihuatanejo and La Union.

When we've had to take our dog on a micro we cradle him in our lap even though he's a medium-sized dog and say "hola" to the lady with her baby in her arms. ;-)

Scooters and small motorcycles

by Ironwood @, Wednesday, February 12, 2025, 02:18 (633 days ago) @ jeffc

I was amazed at the low prices for scooters and small motorcycles on sale at Soriana. 150 - 250 cc ranging in price from 20,000 to 24,000 pesos, or ballpark $1100 - $1300 US or $1400 - $1700 Canadian. They are likely all manufactured in Mexico. Quality may be a question mark, but their low price explains the proliferation of these vehicles on Zihua's roads, which increasingly look like Saigon/Ho Chi Minh City.
Back home I ride a 2007 "super scooter" 650 cc Suzuki Burgman, but a new one there runs $13,000 or more, Canadian.....and a small 50-150 cc Honda or Yamaha scooter would likely be three or four times as expensive as one of these Mexican models. We're apparently getting ripped off.

You get what you pay for. I bought a Chinese scooter called Roketa for 900 bucks once. Showed up in a big wooden crate. Kept breaking down, so I brought it to the local mechanic with a sign "We repair all scooters." Guy couldn't get it to start and gave it back to me. Three weeks later his new sign said "We repair all scooters except Chinese."

The Chinese scooters and motorcycles have made great strides with regard to reliability and longevity. Having said that, they are still miles behind the Japanese. You would never be able to make me part with my Honda Silverwing unless and until Honda finally creates an electric scooter similar to the Silverwing.

I was looking at the price of those as well at Bodega, incredible prices 24000 peso (1675.96 CAD).

We get ripped off big time in canada eh! but everyone seems to be ok with that (including the government ripping us off, the stuff I have seen inside government incredible. I worked for the OAG (along with other depts like elections ekks, ESDC big eeks on this project https://nationalpost.com/opinion/ottawas-latest-it-project-ballooning-by-billions, rcmp during these years https://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/national/rcmp-horribly-broken/article17997461/ I could write a book on it all! and I should... )
I had to leave the OAG it was too corrupt for my liking. Too many milking the mess silly. Its just another money mouth piece... )

In central and south america I think people would be up in arms if they got ripped off, from what I can tell. Good on mexico for making stuff. I heard the time to prototype something in china is weeks not months or years as per america. Good documentary https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Factory

I'm in engineering in canada, we haven't seen good engineering in years... we're all over priced pencil pushers doing not much but pushing a lotta paper around.
