I worked for the canadian government and giant defense corporations (Lockheed) - good luck trying to raise red flags. Too many milking the mess.

Was on this project https://globalnews.ca/news/9526233/military-helicopter-crash-cyclone-software-bill/ the the stuff I saw on that project incredible. Tried to raise red flags impossible.

Was on this project https://nationalpost.com/opinion/ottawas-latest-it-project-ballooning-by-billions yikes the stuff I saw on that project, tried to raise red flags. I had to leave but many milked it silly. I could have as well, but I have integrity and morals/ethics plus standards.

Was at this large national police force for close to a decade the stuff I saw there and raised red flags about incredible https://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/national/rcmp-horribly-broken/article17997461/
The guy running this sat a few desks away https://www.vice.com/en/article/the-rcmp-surveilled-thousands-of-innocent-canadians-for-a-decade/ and our boss caught up in this scandal https://ottawacitizen.com/news/local-news/covert-rcmp-unit-hardly-a-secret-witness-tells-disciplinary-hearing and I had two bosses die in one year TomK in this article was my boss https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/ottawa/canada-training-centre-kemptville-rcmp-asbestos-mould-1.5378334 Huge law suit against them but that takes decades to resolve https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/new-brunswick/rcmp-class-action-lawsuit-certified-greenwood-gray-harassment-bullying-1.6597472
The stuff I have seen incredible.

And the OAG (auditor general) toxic mess that is. Trying to raise red flags about the mess is impossible. Needs a complete clean up and rebuild.

We made the decision to move here, Zihuatanejo, 8 years ago, permanently. Bought a house, not a condo, settled in and applied for Mexican citizenship when we could. We now hold dual citizenship, USA and Mexico. We are very happy with our decision.

Yes, we still can vote in the US and do.

I think the USA is in massive debt though https://www.visualcapitalist.com/97-trillion-of-global-debt-in-2023/ (Canada 3 trillion in debt) not sure how its going to get out of that mess. small is good simple is smart sort of living again? time will tell I guess.
As we (Canada included) go from one extreme to the next.
Government spending is very screwy, who spends it all in a year then asks for more? Auditing is even more screwy, I worked auditing for the government it was a toxic mess I had to leave (took pay cut and demotion just to protect my mental health, health over wealth any day). They were taking the money to fix things and spent it on salary dollars the ombuds person said in my exit interview. Trying to raise red flags was impossible in there. Need early audits, independent small firms doing audits continuously and automated audits. But, that ain't happening any time soon. Mess builds the empires seen that many of times over in my 24yrs gov 10 years working for giant corporations (ie lockheed) Trying to raise red flags is a very hard thing to do. Career limiting move.

Ok 35 trillion!

WHO SPECIFICALLY does the USA owe?

Any and all investors who purchased United States Treasury Bonds, Treasury Notes, and Treasury Bills. These are debt obligations of the United States Treasury. Investors around the world purchase these investments because they have always had every reason to believe that the United States would honor its debts. The 14th Amendment to the United States Constitution states that, "The validity of the public debt of the United States, authorized by law, including debts incurred for payment of pensions and bounties for services in suppressing insurrection or rebellion, shall not be questioned."

Some legal experts have argued that this means that whether or not the United States Congress authorizes an increase in the debt ceiling, the U.S. must still pay its debts. Others have claimed that this is a dubious interpretation. The U.S. Supreme Court has not ruled on this issue.

Of course, along comes a sick, cruel, corrupt *Dictator Wannabe who believes he can wish away the United States debt. The result of the U.S. defaulting on its debt would be similar to a few dozen thermonuclear devices simultaneously detonating in the major financial centers around the world. Just gotta' love the chaos. The one redeeming consolation is that the ^Basement Dwelling MAGA would be taken down with the rest of us.

I suspect that if the US refused to,pay its debts, it would end the confidence that the US currency enjoys, resulting in a different currency taking primacy in international transactions. Trump is terrified of this, for good reason. Look at his threats regarding a BRICS currency that does not even exist.

Trump repeats tariffs threat to dissuade BRICS nations from replacing US dollar

“We are going to require a commitment from these seemingly hostile Countries that they will neither create a new BRICS Currency, nor back any other Currency to replace the mighty U.S. Dollar or, they will face 100% Tariffs," Trump said on Truth Social in a statement nearly identical to one he posted on Nov. 30.

Rather than a new BRICS currency, international traders might be attracted to the Euro.

... I call and write my Alaskan senators regularly (for all the good it does).

Calling and writing does good, especially writing and sending letters via U.S. Mail, either handwritten or typed with "wet signatures." There are a few different avenues that you can take.

Before the past week, my main theme was to remind them that they took an oath to uphold the Constitution and protect the Republic. They did not take an oath to a "Wannabe Dictator" as General Milley called him. The time has come for them to decide what is more important, their political careers or the United States Republic. The ending of the letter recalls Benjamin Frankin's famous quote in response to the question about what kind of government the new country would have: A Republic, if you can keep it.

Since the past week when Agent Orange licked Putin's foul arse and called the President of Ukraine a dictator, several Republicans have pushed back. Even The New York Post, yet another of Rupert Murdoch's Republican propaganda outlets, pushed back with the front page showing Putin and the title, "This is a dictator."

Here are five Republicans who have publicly stood up to Agent Orange on this issue:
Congressman Republican Don Bacon
Congressman Brian Fitzpatrick
Congressman Joe Wilson
Senator Roger Wicker
Senator John Kennedy

Here are five Republicans who have publicly stood up to Agent Orange on this issue:
Congressman Republican Don Bacon
Congressman Brian Fitzpatrick
Congressman Joe Wilson
Senator Roger Wicker
Senator John Kennedy

My plan is to send each one a letter via U.S. Mail thanking them.

I would hold off thanking them until they actually vote the same way. I think they're following the Collins/Murkowski playbook, publicly claiming concerns but (almost always) voting in support of the wannabe dictator and his minions.

I will write personal thank you letters to every Republican Senator who votes in favor of a successful impeachment.

You are joking, right? You can't be that naive. This is not about auditing. This is not altruism. This is a malevolent fascist entrepreneur who is vacuuming up as much sensitive, confidential data about citizens as possible for who knows what commercial purposes in the future. Most likely this data will be used for his attempts to turn TwitterX into the financial equivalent of China's WeChat, the payment application that in many parts of the country has almost entirely replaced Chinese paper and coin currency with the blessings of the Communist Party. Did you know that in China, if you jaywalk, before you reach home, your WeChat account will be debited the jaywalking fine? That is certainly what Musk wants. That is just for starters. Fascist governments want total control over their citizens.

One consolation is that the MAGA will go down with the rest of us citizens, probably much harder. You know that Agent Orange calls his MAGA supporters, "Basement Dwellers," right?

Auditing? What auditing? There has been no auditing.

Instead, there has been the indiscriminate termination of thousands and thousands of employees, not based on the duties they perform, but on the fact that they are in the first year in the position.

It is the flawed process that Musk used when he terminated all of the Tesla employees who were working on the expansion of the SuperCharger network. Then he had to go back to them, asking them to come back.

One can be wasteful and risky with one’s own business. Being wasteful and risky with public services, including safety and security services, is a whole different, and higher, level of folly.

Auditors do not fire people. They study policies and procedures and determine if they are relevant, meaningful, and complied with. In the case of financial audits, they perform tests to assess the quality and accuracy of financial statements and the robustness of a client's accounting practices. Then they make recommendations for future actions by the client's management.

It’s interesting how diverse the views are within the US. My friends and community and are very optimistic with his appointments and what he’s achieved in the last month. But that’s why we have an amazing country.

Let's see, are you happy about:

A man who claims that no vaccine has been safe and effective running the health department? (Ah, to get confirmed he had to say to the nice arse-licking Republican Senators that he believed that vaccines were, well, okay.)

A woman who idolizes dictators Putin and al-Assad and believed that Ukraine started the war? (Uh, to get confirmed she had to say to the nice arse-licking Republican Senators, "Putin started it.";) Note: My apologies. I can't seem to get rid of the winking emojis. I guess it's the ending parentheses.

A man who has for years repeatedly claimed that the FBI weaponized the department against Agent Orange and has now promised to weaponize the FBI against Agent Orange's opponents? (Luckily for him, he didn't have to take back his promise to the nice arse-licking Republican Senators.)

A hard-drinking mysoginist who has committed sexual assault to lead the Defense Department where approximately 20% of the military are women? (Luckily for him, all he had to say to the nice arse-licking Republican Senators was, "I'm not perfect.";)

Your friends and community are very optimistic with his appointments and the chaos that has been achieved in the last month? That is why we have an amazing disappearing democracy.

We didn't even mention the Real Nazi-Saluting President who was not elected or confirmed. Are you optimistic about his fascist antics?

By the way, did you notice that -- yuck, yuck, guffaw, guffaw -- the White House published a graphic with the Man Who Would Be King? I am assuming that this was in response to the above Time Magazine cover with Musk as President. Agent Orange's ego is quite fragile, if the truth be told.

Are your friends and you in love with dictatorships? If so, congratulations. You are getting your wish fulfilled.

Stephen Marche makes a similar point. He acknowledges the diversity and the inherent tensions of such diversity as important characteristics that support America. (I find it interesting that diversity, along with equity and inclusion are under attack.)

He also argues that the tension and structural aspects of the US, including the tension between state governments and federal governance, argue for another US civil war.

“A celebrated journalist takes a fiercely divided America and imagines five chilling scenarios that lead to its collapse, based on in-depth interviews with experts of all kinds.”

We're not against those principles, per se, but many people like me are against a bureaucratic superstructure called DEI that is spending hundreds of millions of dollars with "Chief Diversity Officers" at every campus or workplace and forced "Diversity Statements" where our devotion to "Diversity" is a critical part of our hiring to teach Biology or Medicine; there is nothing more illiberal than mandating a written statement in job applications and expecting a response on a certain side of the political spectrum, and it is reminiscent of McCarthy and his Witch Hunt in its lack of respect for dissenting ideology--consider the irony, given that Diversity is the goal. The 14th Amendment says "Equal Protection under the law" and when there is stigma associated with being a white heterosexual male, or any other demographic,in the process of hiring, it becomes a violation of that Amendment and is exactly why DEI, which purports to fight racism, is taking a hit in the courts. Jonathan Haidt talks about this at length, better than I can, in "The Coddling of the American Mind," not exactly a right wing gunslinger, but a sensible Centrist who got fired for his opinions on this. Kid Rock, whom I never thought I would quote, said he achieved diversity in his band by choosing the best people for the job, not at the behest of a government bureaucracy telling him who to hire.

White heterosexual males have been at the top of the heap for a very long time, and not necessarily because they were smarter or had better skills. Just look at the fact that Trump is having to appoint someone to be the new Chair of the Joint Chiefs who doesn't meet the existing requirements.

When you’re accustomed to privilege, equality feels like oppression.

You’re describing equity not equality. Equality is equal opportunity regardless of race/gender/sex orientation and the outcome being the most qualified based on merit. Equity is equal outcome by intervention not merit. I don’t know about you but I don’t care what race/gender/sex orientation my airplane pilot is as long as they’re the most qualified to fly my family safely, not because there needs to be equal outcome of pilots who fill certain race/gender/sex orientation quotas.

If you didn't care then why vote to end that equity? Now we're back to the "good ol' days" where you have LESS QUALIFIED people getting jobs simply because of being white because you voted for a racist white nationalist, which is how the system was prior to DEI being implemented, which simply meant that historical wrongs were being righted, and unqualified retired 3-star generals weren't getting the jobs that a more qualified non-white person held. Racism is not over, but now we're back in the thick of it like we haven't seen since the 50's thanks to voters like you.

This is a such a specious statement, it hardly qualifies as an argument.

It is unlikely that the pilot is “the most qualified to fly…”. Only one pilot would be “[n\b]the most[/b] qualified”. It is unlikely that such pilot is flying you.

But every pilot who flies is qualified, just as every surgeon is qualified to perform surgery, every lawyer is qualified to practice law, etc. That because the regulatory bodies, reviled by conservatives as unnecessary, obstructive, costly bureaucrats, see to it that incapable professional do not practice.

DEI does not permit incompetents to engage in practice. It works to achieve a system in which potentially the best are not denied the opportunity to become educated, become trained, and practice simply because of their “race/gender/sex orientation”.

Presumably you want a highly qualified pilot, even if that person is a transgender person of color adhering to a religion you find abhorrent.

Are you “for diversity” or simply “not against diversity”?

Are you for women, people of color, non-cisgendered people, ethnic minority people, and others having “equal opportunity” to succeed? Or just not against that?

Do you support the idea that children from financially disadvantaged families should be able to start their day at public schools being sufficiently nourished that they can concentrate on learning?

When they get to secondary school, should women, people of color, non-cisgendered people, ethnic minority people, and others having “equal opportunity” to participate in extracurricular activities, unburdened by barriers? Should the children from financially disadvantaged families get to participate without the need to go to their after-school and weekend jobs?

If they somehow get to college, do you want only the children from wealthy families the be able to accept unpaid internships at top-tier companies, while those other students accept low-paid jobs that do not bolster their resumes, so that they can continue their educations?

If diversity had already been achieved there woukd be no need for DEI policies. The fact that these are needed is a demonstration of the failure of a society.

Are you for "World Peace" or simply not against it. Are you for Fighting World Hunger or simply not against it? Why don't you have a flagpin on your collar demonstrating your allegiance to these causes? I don't think you're truly committed to these causes. (Look up the "White Savior Complex.";)
And job applications don't need 40 gender categories, like "gender mosaic" (no, really). As Bill Maher said to Donna Brazile recently, the Left is not going to win another election unless they abandon some of the Ivory Tower woke bullshit and appeal to the Purple constituents on practical issues regarding jobs, economy and infrastructure. I don't feel the need to go online and assert myself as an "ally" of the LGBTQ or any other community in order gain social acceptance or get a job in academia, which has been dragged down by this hyper-PC nonsense. The truth is the USA is probably the most diverse country in the world, ethnically and culturally and we already had laws prohibiting denying minorities jobs before the DEI movement emerged and fizzled.

It is not about active discrimination at the ultimate stage, it is about institutionalized barriers that interfere with people even getting through the previous stages.

I wonder whether you have even studied Marxism or Maoism. I suggest that if you had, you would understand that there are likely more Flat Earthers in America than there are Marxists or Maoists.

And the idea that the corporate, capitalist media… including Disney… is somehow promoting Marxism or Maoism is beyond laughable; it is pathetic. Maybe right-wingers thing that Disney must be socialist because his father was Canadian.

I suggest that job applications should have zero gender categories, except where gender is a BFOR (a bona fide occupational requirement).

The Daily Mail? Really? I suppose you think it's the model of enlightenment.

Do you really think Disney deliberately alienates its core audience in order to push a social agenda? That's a pretty poor business model and a sad commentary on you. No. It puts out products it thinks will draw a big audience, and in that way, it's reflecting the existing culture, not trying to change it.

There's a whole 'nother world out there Yand. And it's a lot bigger and more diverse and inclusive than you think. And most people like it that way. Your efforts to stamp it out are petty and doomed to failure.

Wow! You really do believe that, in a capitalist economy, a big corporation like Disney, beholden to shareholders hungry for profits, would deliberately alienate their audience and compromise their bottom line to push a supposedly unpopular social agenda. And that makes perfect sense to you. Just.....wow! Any board of directors with that kind of mindset would be tarred and feathered and ridden out of town. Sorry Little Guy. Vous avez tort. The evidence is overwhelming.
"Disney's Cost-Cutting Measures in 2023: Layoffs and Financial Impact. With falling stock prices, subscriber losses, film flops, and declining park attendance, Disney faced considerable financial struggles in 2023. This led to the company announcing major layoffs and cost reductions late in the year."
"Disney asks employees to fill out ‘privilege checklist’ as part of inclusion programme, leaked documents show."
"Disney dumps two DEI programs as investors pressure company to ax more woke initiatives: SEC filing"
"Disney: a billion-dollar casualty of woke"
I know people who work there, or have worked there, and they tell me recent films are, in contrast to family values entertainment of past decades, just PC checklists, with little interest in creating "art" anymore. I'm not a cheerleader for Disney, or a rabid critic, I am just stating their allegiance to "social justice" themes has hurt their profits, or compromised their storylines. Is that too painful to wrap your head around? Look at the stock chart since 2021.
Haven't you seen the backlash in the news? Take another lap in the River Nile, cowboy. Just downstream of Cairo.

Sorry Little Guy. Vous avez tort. The evidence is overwhelming.

What you consider to be “evidence” that Disney’s faltering stock prices is somehow related to it being a Marxist/Maoist front is no more than a bunch of unattributed quotes. You seem to first be believing your own rhetoric, then falling into the post hoc ergo propter hoc fallacy.

People who know more about content production than you or me rate Disney highly.

Box Office Studio Report Card: Disney’s Billion-Dollar Rebound

Disney
Grade: A
Highs: “Inside Out 2” ($1.69 billion), “Deadpool & Wolverine” ($1.33 billion), “Moana 2” ($717 million to date)
Lows: “The First Omen” ($53 million), “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” ($397 million)
Takeaways: The bigger they are, the harder they fall… the faster they rise again? After a rare, terrible year in 2023, Disney enjoyed a considerable box office rebound with not just one but three expected billion-dollar blockbusters. (“Moana 2” is projected to cross the billion-dollar mark in January.) No other studios fielded a single $1 billion release in 2024.

Stock analysts attribute a variety of factors for the Disney stock performance, none of which is Marxism, Maoism, or DEI.

Why Is Disney Stock Dropping?

While Disney’s streaming business has turned around remarkably well and is now generating operating profits, versus a peak quarterly loss of nearly $1.5 billion, its Parks segment is the latest worry.

Disney blamed everything from the Olympics and China’s sluggish economy for the slowdown, and said that while high-income customers have of late preferred to travel internationally, those falling into the lower-income bracket are financially strained due to high inflation.

Its “Inside Out 2” is not only the most successful movie at the box office this year, it's also the fourth most successful animated movie ever.

Wall Street analysts are quite bullish on Disney stock, despite its dismal price action. The stock has a consensus rating of “Strong Buy,” while its mean target price of $119.43 is almost 39% higher than yesterday’s closing prices. The stock even trades below its Street-low target price of $100, while the Street-high target price of $140 represents an upside potential of about 63%.

Not only is there no Marxism or Maoism, there isn’t even any Trotsky in there.

In a just-released SEC report, Disney has acknowledged that the woke political and social agendas contained in its creative product have cost the company dearly and drained the value of shareholder stock.

It all boils down to a lack of “consumer acceptance,” or more particularly general consumer perceptions “of our efforts to achieve certain…social goals, often differ widely and present risks to our reputation and brands.”

Whatever you, crotchety old Bill Maher, and a few others may think "woke" means, it simply means "considerate". Something we should all try to be. It suggests you actually care about others. It means you don't park in a handicapped zone. It means you treat others as you would want to be treated. Whatever extreme definition you and others try to give the term are YOUR hangups, not anyone who actually tries to be "woke". The opposite of "woke" is "asshole". If after 100 years of movies and cartoons that ignore gays and minorities, we suddenly have some movies and cartoons INCLUDING and even ABOUT gays and minorities, it's no big deal, but here you are all hung up on "woke". I can't believe what a scandal a few insincere people make about this. Woke ain't the problem, man.

People don’t even define “wokeness”. It seems to be used as a term to disparage anything that doesn’t support the status quo or the reactionary political forces. The users are the Humpty Dumptys of our time.

“When I use a word,’ Humpty Dumpty said in rather a scornful tone, ‘it means just what I choose it to mean — neither more nor less.’

’The question is,’ said Alice, ‘whether you can make words mean so many different things.’

It is difficult to imagine a useful critique based on a term that has no meaning except “just what I choose it to mean”.

Don’t accept what a biased report twists words to mean. Look at the SEC report itself. Disney wasn’t talking about DEI. Here is what they said.

We face risks relating to misalignment with public and consumer tastes and preferences for entertainment, travel and consumer products, which impact demand for our entertainment offerings and products and the profitability of any of our businesses.

Our businesses create entertainment, travel and consumer products whose success depends substantially on consumer tastes and preferences that change in often unpredictable ways. The success of our businesses depends on our ability to consistently create compelling content, which may be distributed, among other ways, through broadcast, cable, theaters, internet or mobile technology, and used in theme park attractions, hotels and other resort facilities and travel experiences and consumer products. Such distribution must meet the changing preferences of the broad consumer market and respond to competition from an expanding array of choices facilitated by technological developments in the delivery of content.

The success of our theme parks, resorts, cruise ships and experiences, as well as our theatrical releases, depends on demand for public or out-of-home entertainment experiences. Demand for certain out-of-home entertainment experiences, such as theater-going to watch movies, has not returned to pre-pandemic levels. In addition, many of our businesses increasingly depend on acceptance of our offerings and products by consumers outside the U.S. The success of our businesses therefore depends on our ability to successfully predict and adapt to changing consumer tastes and preferences outside as well as inside the U.S.

Moreover, we must often invest substantial amounts in content production and acquisition, acquisition of sports rights, launch of new sports-related studio programming, theme park attractions, cruise ships or hotels and other facilities or customer facing platforms before we know the extent to which these products will earn consumer acceptance, and these products may be introduced into a significantly different market or economic or social climate from the one we anticipated at the time of the investment decisions. Generally, our revenues and profitability are adversely impacted when our entertainment offerings and products, as well as our methods to make our offerings and products available to consumers, do not achieve sufficient consumer acceptance.

Further, consumers’ perceptions of our position on matters of public interest, including our efforts to achieve certain of our environmental and social goals, often differ widely and present risks to our reputation and brands. Consumer tastes and preferences impact, among other items, revenue from advertising sales (which are based in part on ratings for the programs in which advertisements air), affiliate fees, subscription fees, theatrical film receipts, the license of rights to other distributors, theme park admissions, hotel room charges and merchandise, food and beverage sales, sales of licensed consumer products or sales of our other consumer products and services.

Nothing in there about the Disneyland of Marxism and Maoism.

Rob is right - woke is just another term for common courtesy. But too many see it as an onerous burden on their natural inclination to be obnoxious jerks. And too many think common courtesy is just a quaint notion whose time has passed and certainly won't garner any 'likes' on social media. So 'woke' has to be stamped out, violently if necessary.

The dumbing down of America continues apace.

Take a look at Woke Mama Jerelyn Luther (the Shrieking Student) shouting into the face of her preceptor at Yale University at 100 decibels. He's white and he's male and he "just doesn't get it." There's nothing remotely "courteous" about this crowd, who act more like characters out of Children of the Corn than Ivy League scholars. Academic campuses have swung way to the left in America, introducing new jargon like microaggression, cis-male, intersectionality, "safe spaces,"introducing a stifling climate to the extent that many right-leaning faculty or conservative speakers (Heather MacDonald at Claremont comes to mind, or Peter Boghossian harassed and getting dirt clods thrown at him for conducting a survey, or author Jonathan Haidt getting in trouble at Yale for not giving in to DEI mandates, or the Conservative Activist punched in the face at Berkeley by Greenberg) getting bullied are hiring bodyguards, or resigning. And anyone who doesn't speak the special language, Orwellian Newspeak, is doomed in a DEI-fueled climate that encourages minorities to identify as the Oppressed. This is not a movement, it's an intolerant cult that is harmful to learning to the extent that it is distinctly illiberal, misguided and oppressive. I'm Left of Center, or Left-leaning centrist, but this is the tail wagging the dog and some the most intolerant people I have ever witnessed. If this type of behavior is "courtesy" we're in trouble.

You're confusing rudeness and poor manners for something it isn't. WTF happened to common sense? How can anyone see rudeness or ill manners and mistake it for wokeness? Because Faux News or some TV personality says it is? Time to grow, learn and move on. Ill-mannered kids, divisive politicians, and out-of-touch TV personalities don't get to define wokeness.

I am saying that Wokeness is widely and unnecessarily intolerant. Jerry Seinfeld says he can't tell his favorite joke about a gay French king anymore due to hate mail, and it's not coming from the Right. Something that no one would have thought twice about 30 years ago. Many other artists have complained too about an intolerant left-wing vibe, often referred to as Woke, that limits their free expression.
You're conveniently twisting wokeness to mean "courtesy." In fact, the first time I heard that. This has nothing to do with Fox news.

I'm not twisting anything. Jane Fonda said basically the same thing I did when she received her SAG award a few days ago. I believe she called it "decency".

I've never been a fan of Seinfeld. Never watched an episode. I have no idea if he's funny. But cancel culture is not wokeness. Intolerance is not wokeness, it's the exact opposite. Awareness = wokeness. It isn't a lifestyle or a philosophy. No one is expected to live or die by its definition. It is NOT something one imposes on another, as you seem to be interpreting it here.

I don’t know that joke. But I do know many jokes from 30, 40, 50 years ago that might have been funny at the time. As we learned how hurtful humour can be when it involves laughing at others, particularly disadvantaged others, we have come to understand that it is not funny to laugh at others. I am embarrassed now at some things I used to think were funny.

When I tell stories now that I think are humourous, they are about myself. I hurt no one, and I have many reasons to laugh at myself. ;-)

True, but it goes further. Good humor requires seeing angles and thinking outside the box in unusual and surprising ways. Liberals are usually raised in an environment where unconventional thinking is deemed healthy and encouraged - out-of-the-box thinking that leads to a good sense of humor; conservatives generally are programmed to walk a narrow conformist line in many ways - to do otherwise is a threat to social order - which can stifle their creativity and sense of humor. Their ability to draw inside the lines is probably a good reason why conservatives do well in business while more liberals work the comedy clubs.

As the parent of young children I think you’re missing the point. Consenting adults should do whatever they want but elementary school kids don’t need to be asked what gender they are by public school teachers who can’t define what a woman is. “Common sense” and “normal” you would think would be obvious but in our current society it is not. Liberal and woke folks with good intentions somehow think it’s courteous to allow men to compete in women’s sports and that it’s somehow beneficial for adult men to dress up as women and read pornography to small children. Very strange times! For some, this demonized maga slogan is just a return to normal in many of these extreme cultural oddities.

Oh c'mon Dude. You don't really think drag queens read porn to small children, do you? I dare you to find even one credible instance that they do. Look. Start with the premise that drag queens aren't entirely stupid. They are acutely aware that they're out there on the fringes of society and that they're loathed by at least half of America. So they're not going to go out of their way and do anything that will bring down even more scorn and hatred, perhaps even violence. And for what purpose?

The propaganda becomes reality for people incapable of critical thinking.

In NO school do teachers not know what women are. In NO school are teachers asking elementary school kids what gender they are. In NO school are drag queens reading pornography to children. As for transgenders participating in sports or the military, it bothers me not at all. Why does it bother you? Do you even know a transgender person?

You've been well indoctrinated by the divisive MAGAt propaganda.

Who you SHOULD be worried about are MAGAts and their adherents. Almost every day one of their preachers, pastors or politicians is getting busted for being a child predator. As far as I'm concerned, in my 67 years in the US, it's always been this way. To get a "vote", you have to separate yourself and to do that today it takes a pretty obtuse opinion.

It isn't just the US. In the last decade numerous European Countries have migrated to the Right, some considerably.

Mexico is progressing and moving forward, even though we remain one of the most Catholic countries in the world. Yet we've decriminalized and legalized abortion across the nation, state by state. We've insisted on being represented by 50% women, and we also include transgender people in our political environment as part of our society and culture. Yes, there is some pushback, but it's mostly hollow and based on phony machismo and ignorant intolerance. But unlike what's happening in the USA, no one is seeking to take over and destroy the nation's institutions because we've dared to ACCEPT and tried to INTEGRATE people with all their differences into our public life.

In the USA, conservatives in Great Britain caused the U.S. Revolution to be fought by liberals against an intolerant monarchy. The Civil War was similar: intolerant conservatives of the racist South attacked the more tolerant and relatively liberal northern states. They got their asses handed to them both times by resistance based on liberal ideology. I have no doubt liberals will again rise to the occasion in the States.

You use a phrase "common sense and normal" in reference to a GAY/etc individual and identifying their gender. As a Straight Male I find your "requirements" inconstant with the KNOWN world around us.

What I mean by that, there is much more to our physiology than was known 50 years ago much less thousands of years ago prior to the Bibles definition being "created". It is a known fact humans are born with mismatched physical parts, incomplete physical parts and mismatched genetics. So, utilizing common sense one would have to conclude that your definition with the "Known Factual Information" is extremely flawed.

Now, the presentation of that known data to children and when that data should be presented does deserve a more cautious approach, I'll grant that. But, once again, it's not just a dual equation........

I’m not sure what the “more cautious approach” is.

Is it more cautious, or fraught with more risk, to teach young people that there are only two genders, then years later tell them we lied to them?

Or is it more cautious to respond truthfully to them when they have questions?

Reality is that young people find all these things out for themselves because they have friends who become gay or transgender. They are taught intolerance at home, and now by the U.S. government. But this isn't the 1930's, and we won't get fooled again. Information is within reach, literally at our fingertips. Young people nowadays aren't so easily groomed by bigoted parents or a bigoted government.

"they have friends who become gay or transgender."
Probably just an unintentional error on your part, Rob, but it is my understanding that people don't become gay or transgender. You either are or you aren't. It's not like changing your hair colour, it's just the way you are. I think you meant to say "come out as,,,"
I think it is important to clarify, or the usual suspects will jump on it and say, 'see, they are trying to turn our kids gay!'

As someone who has lifelong friends and relatives who are gay, yes they may be born gay, but sexuality doesn't manifest itself in most children until puberty, and some even later. So I stand by my description. My gay childhood friends and relatives had no idea they were gay until well past their childhood. "Coming out" is a totally different event. Some gay people never come out, never admit they're gay and never experience a gay relationship.

I noticed that you don't mention your own experience to back up the rhetoric.
Perhaps mine will help.

I recently retired from a global corporation with HQ in the USA. "Woke proselytizing" is a complete fiction in the real world where the rest of us live.

"DEI" for me as a woman in a male-heavy workplace meant that my work stood on its own merits and I was extremely good at my job. I kept my head down, outworked most of my colleagues and advanced.

One observation that stayed with me is that only white male colleagues could get away with emotional displays such as your comments demonstrate. In a way I envy you because I could not afford to be pegged as "emotional"

I hear you! What gets me is what some Statesiders are complaining about is precisely the direction Mexico is going in. Our president is no DEI hire. No product of "wokeness". Neither was Vicente Guerrero, Mexico's president in 1829, a Black man, or Benito Juárez, president in 1858, an Indigenous man. But we are requiring our legislatures and elected bodies to be as close to 50% men and women as possible. Our government and our society is moving forward, becoming more tolerant, more inclusive, righting old wrongs, while the USA appears to be going backwards full speed ahead. Watching that woman get manhandled and hogtied by 3 goons in a town hall the other day while all the ball-less men stood by and did nothing was shameful, and speaks volumes about what is wrong in U.S. society. And it at ain't the drag queens, sister!

Charlotte Whitton, mayor of Ottawa from 1951 to 1964, famously said,

"Whatever women do they must do twice as well as men to be thought half as good. Luckily, this is not difficult."

I grew up in a time when a woman who became pregnant was required to leave her job or be fired. I had three sisters who were each at least as smart as me, and certainly harder working and more conscientious than me. I was the only one who got to go to university because I was male. My university studies were supported by bursary money that was available only to male children of an engineer or clergyman who was also “white, Anglo Saxon, and of a Protestant faith”.

I grew up in a time when a common expression in the US to indicate that someone really had the best in front of them was to say they were “White, male, and 21”.

In British Columbia, the government employees’ union took a case to the Supreme Court of Canada to establish that job requirements must pass a “BFOR (Bona fide occupational requirement) test” to address discriminatory hiring practices that were based on “objective merit tests” that were constructed in a way that resulted in institutionalize d discrimination. (Meiorin decision)

I’m not interested in a Make Anywhere Great Again society that wants to return to faux “meritocracy” that discriminates in favour of people like me… male, White Anglo Saxon Protestants and against so many others.

"(I find it interesting that diversity, along with equity and inclusion are under attack.)."

You're confusing DEI with Affirmative Action. Unfortunately an all too common mistake these days.

"You're confusing DEI with Affirmative Action. Unfortunately an all too common mistake these days."
I know the difference. There definitely have been 14th Amendment-based lawsuits based on DEI initiatives such as mandated "Diversity Statements" when applying for academic jobs, and other hiring practices.

This is the last I'll say in this protracted thread, but here's a thoughtful essay by a black woman from the American South who is happy to see DEI be done with, focusing on how this bureaucratic institution fails in advancing the core tenets of Civil Rights.

I'm not sure of your age, but I'm 67 and I've seen the results of a couple prior goat-ropes just like this. The "Trickle-Down" economics theory has been proven to be ineffective, false and did nothing unless your income was considerable.

I've done oK for myself and whatever the Cheeto-n-Chief and his group of Corn-Nuts decide to do, I'll be ok. BUT, let me explain it this way. A poor man can afford a sandwich a day, a rich man can afford 10,000 sandwiches a day. So, when the economy fails by 50% one man has 1/2 a sandwich, the other has 5,000................you figure it out......

Thinking that the “un T” movement will make a substantive difference is about as delusional as thinking Musk will fix America. I personally hope that Trump is successful in everything he wants to do. Once the folks that supported him are unemployed, and hoping for welfare which no longer exists and have lost their homes and are on the street, will we have a chance to take this house and senate and paralyze him for his last two years. All of the well meaning protests and messes will do nothing other than make their originators feel good. They will accomplish nothing, Unless of course they are copyrighted which will make their authors a few bucks.

The one small problem with this gambit is that you are assuming that the 2026 elections will be fair and free. Musk and Agent Orange jest ain't gonna' let that happen if they aren't stopped by then. No, we must act now. We must do something, anything, everything to get our Congress -- our Representatives -- to act in the interests of the citizens, not our newly self-coronated king and his unelected Nazi-saluting President. Our Representatives took an oath to uphold the Constitution. We must hold them to it. We must remind our Representatives that their duty is to protect the Republic from all enemies, foreign and domestic.

We must also pray for our judiciary. We must pray that the judiciary stands their ground. When (not if) the administration refuses to enforce their rulings, we must pray that they issue contempt of court citations. The administration will most likely continually ignore them, even if some some officials are threatened with jail. We can expect the administration to continue to refuse to enforce the judiciary's rulings and refuse to jail the officials responsible for the illegal actions. That is when the Congress must act. If they don't, we will have lost the Republic. There is no doubt in my mind this dynamic will play out sooner than later. The administration is already breaking many laws and laying waste to constitutional norms.

When asked what type of government the new United States would have, Benjamin Franklin answered, "A Republic if you can keep it." We are in serious danger of losing our Republic.

What else do the people have, other than our bodies and voices, when the Legislative branch refuses to do its job and the Supreme Court is severely compromised? Mass protests are the only thing left.

Tim, people feel powerless. They're beginning to see what the stakes are...and how fast Democracy can unravel.
Uniting under a powerful symbol isn't enough, but combined with other efforts like showing up in large numbers, gaining press, calling our legislators might just imbue the icon with meaning. (Think the Black power raised fist, the posterized image of Che Guevera...and, yes, the swastika.
What would you urge folks to do? Do you think that action can help unify and motivate them?

On a national level there is really not much that can be done individually. Sure, whatever you do will make you feel better but it won’t really accomplish. The “let’s not buy anything today” movement is laughable. Not buying a toaster from Amazon today but buying it tomorrow doesn’t affect Amazon’s bottom line. Ultimately if he ignores enough court orders he could be impeached, but not with the current numbers in the house and senate. I am hopeful that enough people will be hurt by this insanity that in two years we take back either the house or senate and he can’t accomplish much. Until then there is much more that I (and you) can accomplish locally (as always). We have a mayor who thinks he’s king and a town manager who is an example of incompetence.. We have a candidate who can win and are actively working with her. I’m not saying that we should lay back and enjoy the ride, but we all should recognize that there is very little we can do that will be effective.

America is a continent, not a nation. Americans are the inhabitants of that continent, not a nationality. You've only to check your U.S. passport to see those facts in plain English. The rest of America except for the USA and Canada agrees that we are all Americans from Tierra del Fuego to the Northern Territories and Greenland. Even Europeans accept the correction after having it explained to them. Only U.S. citizens cling stubbornly to the incorrect use of America and Americans, and Canadians simply don't want to be confused for U.S. citizens.

A relative worked for Canadian immigration. That was not acceptable to Canadian immigration, but the immigration officers were not permitted to give the correct answer which was “American”.

Wouldn’t the terms for agreement be “North Americans”, Central Americans”, and “South Americans”?

As an aside, I have had friends and coworkers from Brazil, Uruguay, Chile, and Costa Rica. None of them would accept being called “American”. I don’t think that any of my Mexican friends or acquaintances would want me to call them American”.

He would never claim to be an American as his nationality, we're actually not stupid south of the Río Bravo. But if he were to go to Europe and watch a fútbol match between Canada and Spain, he would likely root for the American team, as most of us do who are from this marvelous land called America. No nation of Europe, Africa or Asia would be so arrogant as to claim they are the only Europeans, Africans or Asians. It's time to stop living a lie, especially considering that the USA has now submitted to Russia like a little lap dog seeking Putin's approval, as actions of the past week confirmed and last night's spectacle in the U.S. Capitol so clearly underscored.

That was not acceptable to Canadian immigration, but the immigration officers were not permitted to give the correct answer which was “American”.

You've only to check your U.S. passport to see those facts in plain English. The rest of America except for the USA and Canada agrees that we are all Americans from Tierra del Fuego to the Northern Territories and Greenland.

None of my Canadian friends or relatives would accept being called American. They would vociferously reject that description while agreeing that they are “North American”.

Exactly. This stupid argument just won't die, will it? If a traveler from Paraguay goes to Europe, or anywhere else in the world, including the entire continent of South America, and insists to the authorities that he is "American", he'll be arrested for personation....and stupidity.

And if he told his seatmates at that futbol match between Canada and Spain that he was "rooting for the American team" they'd think he was an idiot.
And so would I.

America is a continent, not a nation.

A continent? Or three continents? North America, Central America, and South America?

Americans are the inhabitants of that continent, not a nationality.

The only person who'd be thought an idiot in that situation would unfortunately be you. I speak from the voice of experience. Except for arrogant Gringos and confused Canadians, Americans root for Americans. It has always been thus since the days of El Libertador. If you were able to simply hang out with anyone south of the Río Bravo in THEIR world, not your Anglo-extranjero bubble, this would be one of those things that are understood among all, taken as a given. Not sure why this is so difficult for you to accept. It's like you're clinging to a belief in Santa Claus. ¿Prefieres averiguarlo en la vida real? ¡Vamos! Hay mucho fútbol hoy en la noche. Vamos a unos bares, tú y yo.

There you go again Rob with your feeble, esoteric, and utterly pedantic "explanation" of Americans having no right to call themselves "American." The only "stubborn" person in the room is you.

Riddle me this: why is it that Americans are the only country NOT allowed to called themselves the name that is part of their official country name: United States of America? Mexico's official country name is United States of Mexico and they call themselves (gasp) Mexicans!

No other countries in North, Central, or South America would even consider calling themselves "American" but we do and you find that cringe worthy? Please!

I'm a military retiree. I've traveled the world. Everywhere we (stubborn people) go, everyone (and I mean EVERYONE) immediately recognizes us as a person from the United States of America when we say we're "American." Give it a rest.

What country? Are you suggesting all European countries are the same? What did they think was wrong?

How come that thread about Rob promoting condo developments while simultaneously condemning them got deleted?

Democracy is the majority of a population ejecting their officials and in this last election both electoral and popular vote went to the potus. Not sure how that’s not democracy.

A "majority of the population" did not elect him. With less than 50% of the total, a majority of the voters did not elect him either.

Freudian slip there? I'm sure you meant "electing" their officials, though more and more "democratic elections" these days seem to result in a lot of ejecting of officials.....Navalny for one.
So, by your measure, recent elections in Russia, Venezuela, Belarus, etc., etc. were exercises in democracy?

All you've done is demonstrate you don't know what "America" is being referred to in the "United States of America". America is not the name of the country. American is not a nationality. It is the name of the entire continent, or supercontinent if you like. It refers to the collective of people and nations, as it was commonly used since long before the USA existed. Unfortunately, neither the Founding Fathers nor the Constitution ever gave its citizens a demonym, and therein lies the conundrum.

No, South Africans don't use your argument that "Africa" is in their name so that makes them Africans by nationality. Yes, the grammatical error is historical, and media has contributed to repeating the error. But Americans are reclaiming their collective identity and the title "American". Only stubborn U.S. citizens and Canadians who abhor being confused for U.S. citizens have a problem with this.

Sad to see you get angry about this instead of accepting the new information (for you) and learning from it.

Oh, and Mexico's name is "Los Estados Unidos Mexicanos". The United Mexican States. Mexico was trying to both flatter the USA with its new official name and at the same time show the U.S. how a demonym works.

The USA has not submitted to Russia. We just want the stupid war to end. Ukraine can’t win and the stalemate needs to end. 4 years is enough. End the madness please. Russia ???????? s not giving up the territory they claimed. Wasn’t anything learned when they took Crimea? This is Europes war to fight. If Europe was even remotely serious they wouldn’t buy all of that oil and gas from Russia. The idea of Ukraine joining NATI was the big mistake.

Rob, can't your system automatically identify and root out Putin trolls?

Mr. Neville "Deco" Chamberlain, wasn't anything learned from your appeasement of a brutal, murderous dictator when they took Czechoslovakia?

"Peace in our time ... until Putin rolls into Latvia, Estonia, and Lithuania ... and then Poland ... Hungary, Bulgaria, Romania ... and ..."

The Soviet Union wasn't so bad, ya' know. They kept the trains running and the price of eggs down.

I never, ever thought I would live to see the day when the right wing would be appeasing, aiding, and abetting Russia. Mr. Reagan and Mr. Nixon and Mr. Bush, Sr. are rolling over in their graves.

Ukraine *will* eventually be a member of NATO.

Here is how I see it.

There are people who are not welcome in my home because of what they say or how they say it. Homophobes, misogynists, racists, and some others are not welcome in my home. I suspect there are some people who would not be welcome in your home.

Rob operates a business of web design, website hosting, etc. from his “home office”.

Rob also has a “virtual home deck”.

Rob invites people to come enjoy discussion on his deck. You don’t have to have a business relationship to be welcome to the social relationship. But we who enjoy the discussion have to behave as good guests in Rob’s home.

Rob is more tolerant than I would be if people were conversing on my deck, but Rob’s
tolerance does get crossed sometimes.

“Your home, your rules. My home, my rules.”

Rob’s home, Rob’s rules.

SG, what would the appropriate response be when someone is parroting the propaganda from a lying, murderous dictator and his bloated, sick, cruel, corrupt lapdog? Honestly, what would you do if the lying, murderous dictator and his bloated, sick, cruel corrupt lapdog were very left wing spouting Marxist Communist doctrine? (I am speaking about real Marxist Communist doctrine, not Northern European Social Democracy ideology along the lines of a Senator Bernie Sanders.) Would you be so sanguine about them spouting their filth? Or like Judge Alito, as long as they are "on your side," would you allow them to continue?
