Safety and entering MX with Perscriptoin Meds

by reid1015@comcast.net, Thursday, April 03, 2025, 17:32 (582 days ago)

We are coming down for two weeks to stay in Ixtapa. I was in Troncones back in 2020 and loved it and felt completely safe.

I have a couple of questions and would appreciate any feedback from folks that have been visiting the area for awhile.

Considering the current environment between the U.S and Mexico, has anyone experienced any safety issues in both Zih and Ixtapa? Are all the Taxis at the airport safe to take and is the road to Troncones safe to drive during the day?

One last question and probably most important.

My girlfriend takes Vicodin for a serious back injury, along with an anti-Anxiety medication. I read that you have to bring the original prescription, a note from your doctor and have both translated, is this true? I would really appreciate any input from people that have brought meds into MX. I take an ED medication (a little embarrassing to admit), lol, do I need to declare that?

Looking forward to receiving your responses.

Thank you,
Reid

I live in Troncones part-time. I took a taxi from the airport to my house yesterday without a concern. Tomorrow I’ll be driving back to the airport to get a piece of luggage that was delayed. It didn’t enter my mind to have any concern.

The driver I usually use was busy, so I had his cousin. We were talking about drivers’ licenses. The drivers for Transporte Terrestre hold a federal license, not just a state driver’s license. It required not only texting, but a criminal records check.

I can’t tell you anything definitive, but I have brought cyclo benzaprine hydrochloride just in the pill bottle with the original label on it. A friend brought a month’s worth of their psychiatric medications in blister packs without any problems. All of these were in carryon luggage.

ED medications are readily available in Zihuatanejo. You might want to compare prices from wherever you live and maybe pick some up here. There is a national pharmacy retail chain called “Similares” that sells genetics. There are several location in Zihuatanejo, including at least two that I can think of near the mercado municipal.

Safety and entering MX with Prescription Meds

You won't need to "declare" your prescription meds. In 20+ years of bringing our prescription meds into Mexico, we have never been questioned. Bring them in the original bottles with your information on them and keep them with you in your carry-on.

Thanks so much for the reply. I remember the last time I drove to Troncones the police had a barricade and pulled us over. They didn't do anything, but it was a bit unnerving. Have you ran across this in your drives to and from Troncones and if so, any suggestions of how to handle this?

Also, thanks for the feedback on prescription medication. These days all you hear about is how Fentanyl seems to be infiltrating a lot of meds in MX. Any suggestions on the safest and most reliable pharmacy to get meds. I care more about the integrity of the medication vs the cost.

Also, can anyone recommend a fishing charter that is out of Ixtapa Marina?

Thank you all, Appreciate your knowledge and feedback.

ZIH to Troncones

I drove from Troncones to Zihuatanejo today. Yesterday I drove someone to the airport.

Yesterday was nicer. There was less traffic. I saw a few Guardia National vehicles each day but no checkpoints. There is one between the airport and Zihuatanejo. It seems to operate intermittently.

I have gone through scores of checkpoints. They have become about as uninteresting as a “drunk driving” roadblock.
