RAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!

by Talley Ho @, Playa la Ropa, Friday, May 16, 2025, 10:25 (540 days ago)

It started sprinkling when we were paddling early this morning.
It's now 10:30 and we are up to .12 inches that is 3 mm.
Now huge, but a nice start.
Who had the best guess???

There are CHARCOS in the streets, so it's an official LLUVIA. ¡Ojalá que continúe!

I missed it by 6 days. It looks like Tere was the GANADORA. She guessed May 17. She's a smart one, that girl! B-)

As a resident of the US, I'm used to temps being stated in Fahrenheit and know what to expect when I leave the house. How could it possibly be considered offensive to translate Celsius into Fahrenheit for us Gringos?

I suspect Victorio was being sarcastic, but you'll notice I never use °F, and as an Austrian immigrant you originally learned the metric system growing up, so I don't understand your faux indignation, amigo. The metric system simply isn't that difficult to learn. Much easier than the archaic imperial measurements.

No indignation. Just suggesting to deal with reality, i.e. Gringos are used to Fahrenheit. If they move to Mexico, it would make sense for them to learn Spanish and get used to Celsius, visitors not so much.

Hola. Why are USAers so arrogant when they travel. ? They are from one of two countries in world that uses the Fahrenheit scale, but everywhere they go, everyone must conform to their standards?

I would suggest that the arrogance here lies with you. You know nothing about the people that you castigate, calling them "disrespectful" or "arrogant". I simply made a post, while sitting in my home in the USA and looking at a weather app that reported the current weather conditions in Zihuantanejo and the temperature was listed in Fahrenheit. I'm sorry if that somehow ruined your day. I was certainly not "traveling" in Mexico or anywhere else at the time, was not running through the airport or mercado screaming, "you locals must conform to the measurement system that I grew up with, or else." I have never insisted that anyone "conform" to anything when traveling abroad. When in Mexico I don't complain that items are measured in liters or kilograms, I find it enjoyable to do mental conversions to the measurement system that I grew up with and have lived with for over 60 years. It's not my fault that the US uses the system that it uses, and I doubt that the US government could care less what my thoughts are regarding it.

It might be a good idea to look in the mirror before calling others arrogant or disrespectful.

When I have visitors in my USA home I'm perfectly fine if they use terms like 'liters', 'meters' and 'Celsius' if that's what they're most comfortable with. I can do the math. Even aboot and hoser are acceptable. It's aboot being a gracious host and it keeps them coming back.

Man, you get your knickers in a twist over the weirdest things. Chill out.

The metric system is far superior to what is now called the United States Standard System or more commonly the United States Customary System. The U.S. loses a tremendous amount of economic productivity because of this antiquated throwback to the Middle Ages and beyond. If I were king of the U.S., I would decree that we will move to the metric system. In anticipation of the fits of hysteria that this would engender, the caveat would be that we will take 100 years to complete the transfer. Everyone alive today will never have to deal with the metric system. All measures would sit side by side for generations. Obviously, it wouldn't take that long but perception is so much more important than reality with many low-IQ individuals.

However, having said all this in support of metric, personally I prefer Fahrenheit over Celcius. The units in Celcius are two wide. It is much easier to say "low 70's" than to say "mid-lower 20's."

Canada began introducing the metric system in 1975, but conversion has been a
bit spotty. Weather, (temperatures, wind speed, rain, snowfall, etc), most weights and measures, distances, etc. are all metric.....but for some strange reason, meat is still advertised predominantly by the pound, with the corresponding....and shocking....kilo price in very small print.

I was pulled over by a Washington state trooper, who said I was speeding in a
60mph zone. I replied that I was driving at exactly 100 kph on my speedometer,
which corresponds to 60 mph. He replied: "No, 100 kph is 62.137 mph, so you were speeding. I'll let you go this time, but remember that conversion."

My dad, born in 1921, (Canada) thought the government was crazy to switch to metric. He pointed out that the country had been surveyed in Imperial measure, miles, not kilometres, by Range and Section. He said they would never re-survey, so what was the point of switching?
I, too, was raised to learn Imperial measure and found it challenging to switch. Sometimes I still do mind calculations to figure out what I am doing. Measure seems toughest for me - how long is 7853 centimeters?? I'd probably need a calculator to figure that one out, so I could actually envision what 7853 cm actually looked like!
But I have to speak metric to younger people. They don't understand Imperial so I have to translate for them! LOL

I was such a big fan of 10cc. It is a pity that the song that they are most remembered for is, "The Things We Do For Love." Within the industry, they were mostly known for inventing the Gizmo, also known as the Gizmotron. Although eventually it was a commercial flop because of technical difficulties, it was coveted by many musicians for the sounds that it could produce. It was used to great acclaim in their only other song that still gets air time on radio, "I'm Not In Love."

I miss 10cc.
