It actually got cool enough Sunday night-Monday morning to have to sleep under the sheets. The rain the other day did its job and "broke the fever", but we're not out of the woods yet. La Canícula is still to come, starting in mid-July and for the following 40 days or so it settles in to make our lives much hotter than they need to be. Just in time for the summer vacation season.
Water rationing is getting stricter until the rains really start replenishing our local aquifers, so please take it easy with the water, especially those of you with pools and gardens.
My wife used whatever clout she has to try to get the problem with La Boquita Canal attended to. The municipal government may have cleared a lot of weeds from the canal, but they left behind hundreds of plastic bottles and other garbage. One of the unattended problems is the total lack of maintenance, which seems surprising during the terms of mayors who own a cement company who have used every excuse they could dream of to award themselves as many public contracts as possible to pour their own cement. The real problem lately is the terrible smell from water currently trapped in the canal. The water smells like sewage water because it is. For decades there's been a "fountain" in the middle of the canal about 100 m west of the "Puente Blanco" from a sewage pipe that runs underneath the canal that's been broken for all this time and yet no municipal administration has fixed it. I had to make a huge public scandal just to get one section of the canal's wall repaired several years ago. One administration after another has acted incredibly irresponsibly by allowing this problem to continue. So Lupita got on the hooter today to try to reach someone who could get the ball rolling, pulling as many levers as she could, which is still how we get things done here. Hopefully we'll see a positive response soon other than simply awaiting the next rain or opening up the mouth of the canal and allowing all the foul water to flow into the bay. But if not, at least she tried. I'm incredibly proud of my wife for the true love she has for our community and for all she has done over the years, like her mother, to make the community a better place.
