Mucha DiverZIHón pero Pocos Turistas
Though it sure looked like it wanted to rain last night, it never did in Zihuatanejo, though I heard a rumor that it sprinkled in Ixtapa. Looks like it'll be 2 or 3 more days until we have another chance for some rain. We were fortunate to enjoy mild temperatures for sleeping last night, and the sound of the waves from the mar de fondo were like a lullaby. Yes, the mar de fondo event continues, though in Zihuatanejo's bay it wasn't bad enough to keep folks out of the water. Visitors to our downtown beach seemed to be enjoying standing in the breakers getting whacked by the waves. I've lived by the ocean most of my life, but I've never stood in the breakers for enjoyment. I'd much rather bodysurf them.
Some tourists showed up yesterday and today, but not many, and apparently they brought very little spending money, so local shopkeepers had disappointing sales. Typical for this time of year.
We've been lucky so far to have no major fires locally even though the hills are tinderbox dry, but the smell of smoke from fires in the region can still be detected during the night and early morning. Several hillsides that are usually burned for clearing to plant maize seem to have been invaded by squatters this year, so maybe that's why locally the fires have been fewer.
An excellent way to enjoy our coastal region is from the ocean with its majestic views of the mountains. For your adventure on our local waters I highly recommend the services of Zihuatanejo Ixtapa Charters. They have vessels for all occasions. Take your pick and enjoy an unforgettable day on the ocean in our paradise.
