The entire town was saddened this Friday morning to learn of the fire that burned several locales near the Mercado Municipal. The fire appeared to start around 4 AM in a tienda de chacharos with lots of plastic items but spread to at least 3 other nearby locales. Its thick smoke spread across the bay towards Playa Las Gatas and out to sea at first light this morning.

The Zihuatanejo community was also saddened to learn of the death yesterday of Tania Calzadilla Espinosa, beloved wife of 40 years of Salvador "Chavarín" Nogueda Alva. She had the swimwear shop in Ixtapa named Siboney. Her bright spirit will be sorely missed. QEPD

Quite a few visitors showed up today, and I was surprised to see the downtown beach and its restaurants full during the day. Restaurants all along the Paseo were doing a good business this evening, and the visitors appeared to be mostly middle class. There were also quite a few extranjeros out'n'about this evening. Has the exodus from the USA begun?

Apart from the smoky air that smelled of plastic this morning, this Friday was an absolutely picture-postcard perfect day. Some thunder boomed out of the sierra in the early evening, but no rain appeared in downtown Zihuatanejo. That should begin to change this weekend.

There was an enjoyable group of musicians and dancers from the Tierra Caliente putting on a show at the pier this evening. Their music and dance are very much a part of our local culture, and most locals grew up learning them in school.

From July 29 until August 8 tuna, including barrilete, are en veda (out of season) along the entire Pacific Coast of Mexico, so please don't ask for them at markets or consume them at restaurants until the veda ends.

Mexico's Cámara de Diputados voted to ban the use of dolphins for entertainment, their breeding in captivity, and their captivity in cement pools. I believe the measure must also be approved by the Senado before it's sent to the Presidenta to sign into law which takes effect when it's published in the Diario Oficial de la Federación. ¡BRAVO!

[image]One of Zihuatanejo's most authentic lodgings that best represents the old Zihuatanejo many of us fell in love with is Bambutreehouse. A lovely two-bedroom, two-bath open-air traditional home located on a low hill just a short walk from La Ropa Beach. Features a full-kitchen, daily maid service and wi-fi internet service. A little bit of Zihuatanejo heaven. Currently with dates available this season.

I saw the fire on the La Ropa webcam, so sad! Thankfully it seems as though nobody was injured.
Rob, I’m reading elsewhere that the tuna ban lasts until October 8. Is that correct?

The federal government says August 8. October would be better, for sure.

Interesting. Never knew this happened.

Any reason as to why? (And why so short a time?)

Hopefully it will be respected better than the oyster season closure. There is always one and often two oyster divers at the links, collecting oysters, every morning.

Yes, SO MANY RULES & REGULATIONS TOTALLY IGNORED BY OUR MUNICIPAL GOVERNMENT, but if you're a GRINGO walking a dog on their precious La Ropa beach (thanks to Francisco of La Perla) or trimming a tree IN YOUR OWN YARD they will attack you physically and fine you exorbitantly (thanks to Israel Campos), which is more than they do to any actual criminal or really any other local lawbreaker.

Looking like a non citizen makes way more careful here.

Interestingly, we have been in two or three social situations (think opening reception for our dentist for one) where he has been present. Every time he has latched onto us as if we were the greatest people out there, and we just smile, nod, make the occasional comment and then walk away and say nasty things about him to each other. Bet if he knew we have three dogs he'd leave us alone!

Ask Grace about the time her home was set on fire with her in it while she was in litigation with him over the property.

In order to plant a new tree, I was removing a dead one a few years ago. Someone walking by stopped and gave me a ration of sh*t for removing the dead one. I tried to explain what I was doing, but she wasn't interested, snorted and stomped away.

Hey Rob: Can you send me your email address? I have a picture I'd like to send you.

Any update on the results from the fire on Friday? I saw a photo. It didn't look too bad from the photo but the little I know about fires, it looks as though the building might need to be gutted.

Not sure what to add. The fire resulted in a total loss for the 3 or so businesses affected, including behind the local where the fire apparently started. I believe there are around 12 people now without a job or source of income. I doubt anyone had insurance. The cement walls of the building are all that's left.

Thank you for the update. It is as I had feared, a total loss. A friend of mine lives in a similar building just a block away. I jokingly mentioned to her that the Fire Marshal would not be happy with the condition of the interior of the building. She shot back, "What Fire Marshal?"

Speaking of which, the Estacion de Bomberos on the road to La Ropa seems to be well equiped with modern equipment. Can anyone speak to their level of professionalism and effectiveness?
