La Ropa news
Has there been any news of someone taking over Paty's on La Ropa? Such a great location and friendly staff. Always our first stop on arrival for our annual holiday.
Sure hope to hear some good news before November!

Sounds rather awful. A shame the municipal government isn't restricting beachfront building heights to 2 stories and everything else to 4 max. Nothing taller than the palm trees. That's how you build an attractive resort. But let's just copy all the mistakes of Acapulco because the inept and unscrupulous politicians there did so well. We've already got a 9-story skyscraper at La Madera that looks like something out of a 1940's horror movie. And guess who built it.

The sign on the beach, that just came down said closed 'indefinitely." There was a schedule posted for yoga, but again, the sign has been removed.
The beach toy rental guys in front know nothing at all, and are concerned as to their future.
Dogs are absolutely not allowed on the beach.
NO buses are allowed past Playa Kyoto, including the van size ones.
That's the latest.

La Ropa is just too depressing a place to enjoy visiting for me anymore. I'd rather stick to my nice memories than lament the bad planning, careless and greedy building, lost trees, lost footpaths, lost wildlife, and lost community we used to enjoy there. I refuse to visit a beach where police ambush, kidnap and harm a person and their dog for walking on the beach at dawn before any of the beach workers would normally be there. Too trumpian for me. I'd always hoped sanity and love for the community and natural beauty would prevail.
"Florida can never really come to grips with saving the environment because a very large percentage of the population at any given time just got there. So why should they fight to turn the clock back? It looks great to them the way it is. Two years later, as they are beginning to feel uneasy, a few thousand more people are just discovering it all for the first time and wouldn't change a thing. And meanwhile the people who knew what it was like twenty years ago are an ever-dwindling minority, a voice too faint to be heard."
John D. MacDonald, "The Empty Copper Sea" (1978)

"I get the feeling that this is the last time in history when the offbeats like me will have a chance to live free in the nooks and crannies of the huge and rigid structure of an increasingly codified society. Fifty years from now I would be hunted down in the street. They would drill little holes in my skull and make me sensible and reliable and adjusted."
Travis McGee from "The Quick Red Fox" (1964) John D. MacDonald

ROB, exactly why I NEVER waste time doing La Ropa any more. It's no longer community friendly. It used to be fun there. I've been here 27 years. I used to jog there in the middle of the day with my dog.

Guys, please don’t dog on LaRopa! Nothing stays the same over the years! For people like me, who live in a hectic city, LaRopa is paradise! I have stayed at Villa Mexicana 30 times & going back Nov. & Feb.
It is a small cozy hotel with the most wonderful employees! So convenient to all that Zihuatanejo has to offer!
To me it’s my 2nd. Home & my 2nd. Family! ????

For the last couple of months, Villa Mexicana has been building a large bar in the south corner that stretches from the beach to the pool. Seems to be taking a very long time to complete.

Apparently it is no longer possible to “dog on Playa La Ropa”.

Things do change. They can change for the better or for the worse. I think that people who live nearby (not me) think the changes are for the worse.
I have lived in Troncones part-time for decades. It has certainly changed since the early 1980s. Some of the changes have been good; some bad. I have tried to adapt myself to my community, and by ‘my community” I mean the families that have lived in the area, including Lagunillas, Boca de Lagunillas, Buenavista, etc.,.
I do not mean the outside investors who want to “Pave paradise and put up a parking lot” and “Take all the trees and put’ ‘em in a tree museum. (Thank you Joni Mitchell.)
What offends me is when people who have bought property in Troncones in the past five to 15 years expect the community to change to match their “back home” sensibilities, whether “home” is Olympia, Washington; Vancouver Island, Canada; or Mexico City.
My father-in-laws was an extensive world traveler, including conducting dozens of tour groups to places as diverse as the Philippines, China (in the 1970s), the Soviet Union, etc. He told people “If you want things to be ‘like home’, stay home.”

How will you feel if this year the Villa Mexicana gets knocked down to build a 20 story “Las Mexicanas” with a disco that goes from 10:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m.?
To me it’s my 2nd. Home & my 2nd. Family! ????
And how will you feel if/when your second home and your second family are displaced?

But.....but......someone just wrote the other day that the restaurant was open, and they tried to order food! (But it didn't go well, apparently.)

I have the pleasure of spending time on LaRopa with Joanna for several years . I love it the way it is and of course I would hate to see Villa Mexicana and Paty’s replaced by crap . The first time I visited was in Ixtapa when it was new and I never came back until a friend told me about LaRopa. Before that we visited Mazatlan every year. So if they ruin LARopa we will do what we did then, find a new little paradise. But if Sotavento is any model, I will probably be dead before the changes take place.

I too have been visiting La Rope for eons. The changes on La Ropa were minimal over the last four decades but the 'times they are a changin' as the bard of my generation sang. If it comes to the demise of Paty's and Villa Mexicana ....I fear the end of the Catalina too....Should this dystopian version of La Ropa happen I do hope you will post directions to the 21st Century version of La Ropa you find. Please!
Warmest Regards,

Doubt that Villa Mexicana is leaving. They are spending a lot of money on their new beach bar, which is still not complete and open.

I hope he doesn’t.
Spreading the information about hidden gems is how the gems become no longer hidden.
I remember talking with some people who had a hotel built in Troncones almost 30 years ago when it was a hidden gem. They said they had driven Ruta 200 for months, going into side road after side road looking at little beach after little beach. It was that extensive, time consuming legwork that resulted in them choosing the hidden gem of Troncones.
Of course, owning a business, they and others had to attract customers. Troncones became less and less hidden and in some views, less of a gem.
I figure if you find paradise, keep your mouth closed. Then no one else will “pave paradise and put up a parking lot”.
Shh.
Troncones will see major growth in the next 18 months.
Tour busses will be arriving soon.
Shh.
Hopefully no DDT

I’ve been seeing tour buses in Troncones for the past two or three years.
Mostly they park near the restaurants close to the entronque, but I have seen them parked as far north as Playa Manzanillo (the area between Hacienda Eden and Tronco Bay Inn).
No doubt pretty soon there will be a push for widening of the road.

You know what? If La Ropa becomes a "dystopian version" of its former self, i.e. a post-apocalyptic, scorched earth authoritarion hellscape, whether the Catalina is still standing will probably the least of our problems.
