I have to thank the municipal government for not using leaf blowers at 6am this morning to clean the Paseo del Pescador for an organized running event as they usually do. They may have read my comments the other day asking them not to, for which my family and I as well as our neighbors and visitors are all surely grateful.
While there appears to have been high numbers of visitors in town today, sales by local merchants and restaurants remain slow. With only 2 weeks of summer vacation left, even though it was a longer vacation period than normal, it's been extremely disappointing for locals. Receiving more visitors doesn't automatically translate into more local prosperity, and our current tourism is unsustainable. Unfortunately local, state and federal tourism "authorities" seem to be in a perpetual state of either denial or fantasy, pretending their trips to Spain every year are fruitful. Targeted marketing may be harder work, but it's the only way to attract visitors with the purchasing power we need for the community to prosper instead of just a few hotels and restaurants. Mass marketing ain't cutting it.
There have been two carjacking incidents on the highway through La Unión this past week, one involving a local resident foreigner, the other a visitor. PLEASE be vigilant and try to drive in convoy fashion. I wish I didn't have to keep reporting these incidents, but the government of La Unión appears extremely derelict in their duties.
Hardly a cloud in the sky all day until this evening. No rain in the forecast for this Saturday, but Sunday evening there's a slight chance.
How odd to see weather reports from places in the States where temperatures are warmer in many places than they are here. And the science deniers continue denying. As fast as Erin went from tropical storm to a Cat 5 hurricane, you'd think they'd start getting the picture. As the busiest part of the hurricane season gets underway along our coast, you can bet your bippy locals aren't denying the science along the Costa Grande. Not after Otis and John. While there is some rain in our local forecast for the next several days, there are no tropical disturbances, so we're grateful for that. However, in Mexico City they're getting what they describe as a once-every-500-years rain. Almost daily for weeks they've been receiving rains much stronger than they're accustomed to. The great lakes of Tenochtitlan, that just celebrated 700 years since its founding, want to return.

My home country of Canada is on fire coast to coast: wildfires/forest fires. The places are quite dry, probably due to lack of snow fall - it is ????????- and rain. But climate change is fake news, eh?
Climate Change
I think a lot of people aren't climate deniers but realize that it been very over sold by the progressives and that the cure is worst than the diseases.
Our climate has been changing for 5 billion years. Why the northern US was covered with a sheet of ice 10,000+ years ago and we have been warming ever since.
The progressives now say that sea level rising by up to 2 feet over the next 100 years is a catastrophe but sea level was over 100 feet lower just 15,000 years ago. I hope that the voices of moderation will win out.
Climate Change
Who and where are these moderates you speak of? And more specifically, what are their plans to deal with the effects of "man-made" rapid climate change, not the slow eons long natural cycles of nature?
Climate Change
I think a lot of people aren't climate deniers but realize that it been very over sold by the progressives and that the cure is worst than the diseases.
How can the cure be worse than the disease? The cure is to move as quickly as possible from climate changing fossil fuels to renewable energy. I use no fossil fuel energy for my home in Canada. My home energy is renewable hydroelectric. I heat and cool my home by heat pump and the occasional use of electric furnace. My car runs on renewable hydroelectric electricity. My home in Mexico is solar powered. I put more electricity into the grid than I take out. I replaced my fossil fuel cooking with electric. My PHEV operates 90% on renewable energy.
Was some of this awkward? Yes. But it pales to the alternative of global warming, condemning our children and grandchildren to a worse planet and worse quality if life. I guess the exception is for those self-centred leaders and followers how care only about the next fiscal quarter, the next election, or their physical comforts during their short time alive.

I guess we know you are not like a significant proportion of the climate change deniers and minimizers. They believe the Earth is only 10,000 years old because their infalible Bible tells them. Many of them say that we don’t have to do anything about climate change because that is not in the Bible and Jesus is coming back before there can be any serious consequences anyway.
The progressives now say that sea level rising by up to 2 feet over the next 100 years is a catastrophe but sea level was over 100 feet lower just 15,000 years ago.
Maybe. And maybe there weren’t millions of people living in the places that will be flooded. Millions of years ago the planet was much hotter than it is now. In fact, mammals could barely survive and dinosaurs were the major life forms.
If you don’t care about life on this planet global warming is nothing to think about.
If you care only about some form of life on this planet, global warming doesn’t matter.
If you care about the lives of our children, our grandchildren, and future generations, global warming ought to keep you awake at night thinking about what more you can do to stop it.
I hope that the voices of moderation will win out.
I hope sensible, science-informed voices will win out. When l hear the anti-science rhetoric in the most powerful country in the world and see the irrational decisions being made there so that some can hold power, I despair of that.

No, no, no. All those scientists decided to conspire to deceive the populace.
Just for shits and giggles. They were bored one day. The same scoundrels who orchestrated the framing of OJ.

We had a nice chat about business yesterday with a restaurant owner on la Ropa.
She agreed with everything that "Lupita's husband" has been saying about visitors this summer. She shared that Rossy's hotel, which is normally 100% full, is running 20 to 30% occupancy. The hotel next to Jungle Pizza is empty, and most of the other small ones are too. She is having no dinner business.
Instead of 2 weeks off in September, she will close the entire month because last year there was no business. Great time to do a very through clean of everything.
This winter and next summers plans are to be open for the 5 winter months 7 days a week, all three meals. No Sunday afternoon off or Tuesdays. Next summer, open for breakfast and lunch, and dinner? Not on the nights Jungle Pizza is open, and probably not at all. There has been almost no interest in dinner this summer, and in the winter, it becomes reservations necessary.
Staff? Normally she hires a few more waitstaff for winter, but this year she plans on just keeping who she has so that they will make enough to hold them through reduced hours next summer.
Hopefully it is a good winter season and next summer is no worse. Hopefully other business owners are making plans too.

China is responsible for 35% of the earth’s greenhouse gas emissions. The US is 11%. I’m not sure what metric you use to measure climate change but my understanding is being 3x the US’ co2 output is not good.

Of course renewable energy policy and CO2 omissions aren't quite the
same thing. Also China has 5 times as many people as USA.

You still don't get it. Why is China or any other country emitting so much pollution? BECAUSE THEY'RE IMITATING AND CATCHING UP TO U.S. CULTURE! I figured out as a kid that humans couldn't sustain themselves if the entire world imitated U.S. culture, and I suspect a lot of others did, too. Why should anyone bother being economical or ecological when there are going to be people like you rationalizing their unsustainable overconsumptive lifestyle? The data centers that are coming onboard with no end in site, which is nowhere near peaking are going to use so much coal just to keep states from blacking out. Predictions are it's inevitable to happen. Nuclear is the only option, renewable will never cut it. They are already talking petawatts and multiple grids are mandatory.

You use the term "progressive" pejoratively. Obviously in your opinion, the progressives are to be trivialized. However, it is not the progressives who are predicting a rise of 2 feet. The predictions are coming from the scientists who have dedicated their lives to research and reporting the truth as best they can, however imperfectly. You know, those same individuals who are denigrated by the "regressives" for being woke, DEI LIBERALS. The same folks who brought the world several Covid vaccines in six months while the regressives were denying that Covid existed but interestingly and alarmingly were taking horse parasite drugs to protect against the disease they didn't believe existed.
For some areas, the 2-foot rise could happen much sooner than 100 years from now. A simple Internet search will yield that this is going to be a serious issue. Many coastal cities will be inundated. Many more will experience constant flooding. Millions of people will be affected. As mentioned by others, taking action now is imperative. Sadly, the regressives will say and do whatever they can to bring about the tragic consequences of climate change, if only to "own the libs." As Kurt Vonnegut would say, "So it goes." Translation: We are screwed. Apologies to future generations.

More people died from covid vaccine complications than the disease without underlying conditions if you want to check VAERS.

"A man convinced against his will is of the same opinion still." - Various attributions
Surfguy, if you really believe this fantastic and thoroughly debunked claim, there is no reason for any more discussion. However, a few minutes of your time with an open mind will show you that this claim is utterly absurd. Here is just one of many rebuttals to the belief that the VAERS proves that more people died from the Covid vaccine than the Covid disease:
Claims that millions of people have died from the
COVID-19 vaccine are unfounded
It starts by saying that the VAERS shows exactly the opposite of what the anti-vaxxers want to believe.
But why should anyone who is already convinced of a massive lie want to fact check their beliefs? If that were the case, no one except for billionaires and fanatical racists would have voted for the Orange Mussolini.

Many of the responses to my comments were expected since a large number of users of this site have left of far-left leaning.
Many times worst-case climate predictions are played as likely or fact by the press or likes to liven up articles to attract eye-balls and by politicians who want to scare voters into voting for them. They tend to feed the climate dogma with many predictions turn out to be wrong:
Thomas Lovejoy, secretary for Environmental and external affairs for the Smithsonian in 1993 stressed the world has one remaining decade of opportunity to avoid calamity since this great environment struggle will be either won or lost in the 90s with the next century too late.
In 2006 Al Gore projected that unless drastic measures were implemented the planet will hit an irreversible "point of no return" by 2016 - Game over.
UN General Assembly president Maria Garces declared in 2019 an 11 year window to escape catastrophe.
Also in 2019 Joe Biden threw his support behind this projection: "Science tells us that how we act or fail to act in the next 12 years will determine the very livability of the planet.
This trend of over hyping the likely effects of global warming continues today especially during heat waves like we have now. Anyone who dares to utter moderating words are attacked as being deniers and implied to be stooges of special inters or imbeciles. This is no way to discuss issues but seems to be the state of discourse today. I seem to think his is the result of many getting stove-piped news feeds from the internet where unwanted articles or opinions are never provided.

Al Gore and all those other people you mention were right. We sailed right past that point of no return and now hurricanes go from TS to CAT 5 in ONE DAY, Bill. The heat wave in the USA and Europe this summer was a result of human-induced global warming. I've only been on this planet for the best part of 7 decades, but a brief perusal of hurricane history shows that we never even registered CAT 5 hurricanes before. Hell, I watched Hurricane Patricia, at that time the largest hurricane recorded at CAT 4, sail past the coast of Zihuatanejo right in front of us. Seeing is believing.
Apparently your very narrow conservative mindset believes everyone who thinks differently than you has been brainwashed by the media you watch and the politicians in your currently pathetic country. Welcome to PLANET EARTH, Bill. Over 8 BILLION people live here. Most have never heard of your news media or your politicians. But they believe what they see and experience. I believe what I've experienced and lived mostly in Florida, the Caribbean and here. The coral reefs I grew up guiding tourists through barely survive, many are dead and gone. They were teeming with life just a few years ago, now bleached from warming, destroyed by increasingly devastating hurricanes, and suffocated by Sargasso seaweed blooms the likes of which have never existed before. I lived the best part of two decades in the Caribbean and Florida and not once did anywhere I live suffer a direct hit from a hurricane. Not Florida. Not the U.S. Virgin Islands. Since I moved away, both places have been devastated REPEATEDLY. Global warming may have been a natural process at other times in history, but it has sped up like never before, and humans are the cause. It's no longer a theory, in spite of what you want to believe.
We've seen here ad nauseam your accusations that the rest of the world is wrong, leftist and brainwashed if they believe differently than you, and that only your conservative ilk and you are right, which is actually the polar opposite of reality, a simple projection of your own shortcomings. Start from there, Bill, and there might yet be hope for you. Otherwise your ethnocentric bias will continue to leave you socially handicapped and in an ever shrinking group of wrongheaded people. Good luck. Wishing you a speedy epiphany.

This is true.
So true and predicted from before the vacines were available.
And how many of you know you can not kill a viris?

I dunno Bill. 97% of climatologists agree that not only does global warming exist but that it's largely caused by the burning of fossil fuels. Seems like a very strong mainstream consensus and not a "far-left leaning" opinion by leftist radicals.
The problem of course is that you have a very distorted view of what is mainstream or centrist, probably because you don't ever get out from under the highly dishonest, gaslighting right-wing media.
Climate Change
Never said it doesn't exist just that a lot of times the dire prediction given are exaggerated (sometime greatly) and that this is pick up by many for their marching orders and attack anyone who disagrees.

If you actually took a deep, objective dive into all this you'd find that the vast majority of predictions are coming true, though maybe not on the timeline that Gore suggested. And I'm curious about the phrase "marching orders". (Perhaps you can tell me why my check from George Soros hasn't yet arrived.) In my experience Liberals/Progressives/Democrats are far more likely to be independent thinkers than those on the right. The overwhelming majority of Republicans who still believe that Biden stole the 2020 election is a perfect example, one of many, of delusional groupthink.
And a disagreement isn't exactly an attack.

Many times worst-case climate predictions are played as likely or fact by the press or likes to liven up articles to attract eye-balls and by politicians who want to scare voters into voting for them. They tend to feed the climate dogma with many predictions turn out to be wrong:
It seems that some people can’t see the forest for the trees. Perhaps more awkwardly but more accurately they can’t see the missing sections of the rainforest because they can’t see the missing trees.
If you tell someone they need to study five hours a week or they will fail the course, but they study only three hours a week and get 51%, it doesn’t mean you were an incorrect alarmist. It means you were correct and their corrective actions reduced the disaster, but they will still not be getting into university. Some countries have taken some actions against global warming, but so much more action is needed.
Some people also think that there is only one tipping point. In fact, there are multiple tipping points some of which we have already passed. Others we have yet to pass.
For example, glaciers are retreating all over the world. That is a tipping point that has been passed. The coral reefs are dying because of the acidification of the ocean water as it absorbs more of the carbon dioxide that is produced by petroleum dependent countries and industries. Island nations are planning for their own elimination because of global warming.
How to leave a sinking nation: Tuvalu’s dreams of dry land
The fact that you have not been killed yet as a consequence of climate change does not mean that others have not died. The fact that your home is habitable with air conditioning doesn’t mean that people can continue to live where there forebears have for generations.
H.L. Mencken said, “It is difficult to get a man to understand something, when his salary depends upon his not understanding it!”. It is also the case that for many, it is easy to maintain an expensive lifestyle today if the next generation is going to pay for it.

They may be ahead in renewable energy but they are also way ahead in Polluted cities, Polluted Air, polluted rivers, polluted lakes. An ocean around them with no fish as the poison's and the over fishing have killed them all. No birds except seabirds. So you are correct that China is ahead in renewable energy but they need to be as they pollute worse that most all industrialized countries. USA was bad 30-40 years ago. USA/Canada has cleaned up its act. China will most likely change as well, just so far, they have not.

And other parts of the world have yet to go through their most polluting stage of development. Much more the reason for the USA to take the lead and try to atone for its cultural sins of overindulgence.
The USA contains around 4.4% of the world's population, yet it consumes 16% of the world's resources. Only Qatar consumes more resources per person than the USA. The USA remains the largest user of petroleum per day. It already did the coal and the wood-burning part where most cities lived with blackened skies during much of the year. Since China has roughly 3 times the population of the USA, it's consumption of resources per person is notably less than that of the USA thanks to its ever-increasing policies of efficiency. They know they're at their limit and that their economic development is currently unsustainable. The USA also knows that, but is now intentionally heading in the wrong direction, undoing much of the hard-won progress of the past 40 years in favor of the oligarchs and the corporations currently running the country.
Climate Change
“Only Qatar consumes more resources per person than the USA”. Let me put my bean counter hat on, average household income in the U.S. is 10 times higher than China, Qatar is 3 times higher than the U.S. Perhaps there is a correlation there, just saying. Using those stats North Korea must be amazing, just don’t ask the people that live there. Big oil has screwed use for decades, they all must be friends of agent orange.

Many of the responses to my comments were expected since a large number of users of this site have left of far-left leaning.
When Hurricane Helene hovered over North Carolina and 250 people were killed, when 137 Texans, including dozens of children at summer camp, drowned in flash floods last month, and 440 people died in California wildfires earlier this year, the climate change impacts of those events killed without regard for their political leanings, right, left or center.
When it happens in your community, the effects of climate change become very clear.

"The Northern Hemisphere's summer of 2024 (June-August) was the hottest on record, with temperatures exceeding the previous record set in 2023, according to climate agencies."
But that's just a coincidence.

Fire those DEI, woke, Communist, LIBERALS who reported those fake numbers!!

So your thought is if the whole world adopted much tougher than Ca.type policies we would be a lot better off? The biggest problem with that is the terrible high cost. We all spending many of trillions of $ per and not having much impact.
What is it, a good number of the people live on less tha $10 a day. If they had these policies a large number of people in Africa would starve. Why in California if you don't make $40k per year you may have to live in your car or worst
.
The worst hurricane in us history was the 1900 Galveston with 8k to 12k dead follow by the 1899 one with 3,400.
Sorry if this is not smooth text since on on the road and using the very small cell screen. Thanks for not just doing a left wing rant.
Climate Change
We all spending many of trillions of $ per and not having much impact.
Well not trillions yet but it might well get there. But that's spread out across the planet and many years. And a relative pittance compared to the estimated costs of doing nothing.
There was a time when conservatives believed in the concept of insurance - being prudent as Poppy Bush would say. And that's what mitigation is here, a form of insurance. The overwhelming consensus of climatologists could be wrong, though the evidence gets stronger every year. But what if they're right? They seem to be very sure of themselves, with all their charts and graphs and data - fake news in your bizarro universe. But if they're right, and given that the endgame would be catastrophic, it might be prudent to try to mitigate the problem now while it's still relatively affordable and not too late. Putting your head in the sand is not an option. That's what Poppy would say.
Green energy is a'comin' whether you like it or not, even if all this climate-change stuff is hokey. It's simply a more intelligent option. The only question is if it will get here in time to save us all, or will Luddites delay and obstruct and slow-walk it until it's too late. With Trump and his minions I fear the latter.

1. Not sure how you extrapolated that assumption from my comment. Climate change events don't care about one's politics. I agree that we probably are past the point of no return.
2. If you sincerely believe that human life and property are simply collateral damage and you will not be impacted, okey dokey.
3. When the Galveston hurricane happened in 1900, the city manager told the residents that the seawall would hold back the storm surge. They did not evacuate. The Galveston tragedy led to the founding of the National Weather Service. Hurricane models have improved over the past 125 years.
4. Bless your heart.

Very good, was wondering if you catch that in 1900 very little early warning which contributed to high death total. Point is very bady huricanes have been a very very long time.
I don’t know but my guess world wide over the last 20 years trillions maybe 10 or more due to all the subsidies, back door requirements, and lost growth that results in more poor and working poor. With all this money spent not sure what impacts it has had and no analysis was what works well and what is not very effective. Maybe you're knowledgeable of this but it seems to me we just keep throwing money at all without focusing on were the money is best spent and don't have any information on what progress we made. Seems like basic information is need.
All we get is deier predictions that seem to me their main purpose is to scare and as i said above many predictions aren't good.
Boy i hate typing on my phone. I know you all are getting tired of me asking these questions but it seems some on the left take whatever is dished out.

So by that effete, pusillanimous logic we should all be neutral, or apathetic, on these issues, despite considerable evidence on a matter that affects morbidity and mortality of millions. Billions.

Totally agree with the assertion that the best form of action is the contribution of money, time, and effort, etc. to actual organization that are helping. Disagree that dialogue is a total waste of time. The trick is to do your best not to have the conversation devolve into a tit for tat, "I'm right. You're wrong." It ain't easy. As my Dear Sweet Mother used to say, "There are two sides to every story. Yours and the shithead's."
The real problem is the denial of facts that are staring us in the face. It amazes me how so many individuals swallow massive lies without question, totally unencumbered by any thought processes.

Actually, if you read Bill's last post, it looks like we're making headway.

I asked a question of you days ago regarding your solutions and as of yet I have seen no solutions offered only denial and right wing platitudes and talking points. What are your solutions? I guess you don't need solutions when you'd rather bury your head in the sand than believe what science is telling you. Of course, the new right-wing (I wont call it conservative because it certainly isn't) mantra is less education is better. Let's keep everyone as ignorant as possible while the oligarchs rob the rest of us blind.
The Voices of Moderation
The progressives now say that sea level rising by up to 2 feet over the next 100 years is a catastrophe but sea level was over 100 feet lower just 15,000 years ago. I hope that the voices of moderation will win out.
Who are “the voices of moderation”?
What do “the voices of moderation” say? That anthropogenic global warming is real or not real? That this global warming will benefit humanity or adversely affect it? That we should let humanity’s greenhouse gas emissions continue to increase year after year? Or that we should take steps to decrease GHG emissions and remove environmental CO2?
Is there a problem that requires solving? And if so, what actions contribute to the necessary solution?
