Lluvias e InundaZIHones
Though it threatened to rain Wednesday night, it never did. A brief sprinkle early in the evening was all we got. Storms lit up the horizon as they floated past off our coast, but we were spared their fury, until the middle of this Thursday when the skies floodgates opened up and Zihuatanejo received quite a torrential downpour. We had a brief waterfall come down the steps from our azotea when the drainage pipes clogged up with leaves. Nothing a squeegee and a broom couldn't fix. But that was a first for us.
Tormenta Tropical Raymond is currently passing by off our coast. We may get more winds and rains this Thursday evening and Friday morning before it moves away northward.
Cars and motorcycles were left floating in front of Sam's Club and stuck in flooded streets all over town, and the taxi my wife took home from an appointment wanted to leave her at López Impresores. She had to pay a hundred pesos extra just to get dropped off in La Madera by the footbridge to the museum. I hate it when taxis take advantage of a woman in distress. A shame she didn't get his taxi number.
Thanks to all the new cement roads and deforestation on our hillsides, the roads now flood faster than ever. But instead of fixing things that need fixing like the canal or the non-existent drainage in most parts of town, the mayor wants to purdy up the walkway in front of her condos at Playa Las Manzanillas in La Madera and waste 50 million more pesos on the pier at Playa Linda. Long-time boat captains say the Playa Linda pier should be abandoned and they should return to using the pier at Playa Quieta which was always usable even during stormy weather and high seas, unlike Playa Linda which was a disaster since day one. I can still recall when our local politicians did things that were right out of love for Zihuatanejo instead of always seeking to further their own ambitions like today.
We even made the national news today thanks to our flooded roads! ¿Pueblo Mágico?
The port of Zihuatanejo remains closed to navigation. And black flags are flying at beaches outside the bay.
If you enjoy learning about and experiencing some of our local flora and fauna, El Refugio de Potosí is a center for wildlife conservation and environmental education. Among its attractions, it features a fully reconstructed sperm whale skeleton (the only one in Mexico), an observation tower, a wheelchair accessible footpath for observing local flora and fauna, and a butterfly pavilion. Located near the beach on the road to Barra de Potosí. Perfect for the entire family.
