A cool Tuesday night made for perfect sleeping weather. The only thing missing is the sound of the waves in Zihuatanejo's bay. Even though we practically live on the beach, the waves are so small we can hardly hear any sounds at all from the ocean during the day or night.

Back when I was still a wee lad in Louisville, possibly Louisville's youngest hippie kid, I used to hang out in a head shop on Bardstown Rd. called "Trade Winds". At the time it was the first of its kind. It was owned by the same person who also opened Louisville's first dance venue for good rock bands called "Kaleidoscope" with cool light shows where I held my 9-year-old birthday party (shhhh), though the police were always harassing the place and its customers. I pretended to work at the head shop even though I was too young to legally work, so I mostly just hung out and ran errands for them. My "pay" was 2 cokes a day and a free pack of rolling papers every now and then, and a nice discount on the cool posters, patchouli, and the clothing I bought there. Anyway, the owner's wife ran the place, and we became friends. Her name is Keiko Guest, and she also has an interesting background, having been born in Okinawa but growing up in Louisville. Anyway, I recently found out not only is she still alive, she's a popular figure in the performing arts in Atlanta, Georgia. She is still very active and doing very well, and I finally managed to get in touch with her. Many of my friends when I was still quite young in Louisville were much older than me, partly because kids my age weren't allowed to be like me and their parents would threaten and warn me, and partly because my own personal history caused me to be a bit wiser, very different and more aware than most kids my age with few exceptions. Keiko was one of those friends who put up with me and made me feel at home, and I'm thrilled not only to reestablish contact with her, but to discover that she's still the same energetic and creative person I knew back then. Still a friend. Still an inspiration. Still a damn good person! And if you're ever in Atlanta and get a chance to see her perform, I hope you'll do so. She remains a total inspiration and still a wonderful person.

I don't post much about my personal life on purpose, but I do so here in the hope to inspire others to be themselves and to follow their dreams. You don't ever have to pretend to be something you aren't to be liked or loved or respected by others. Pretending and being false is lying to yourself and everyone around you, and there's no need to do so. You'll never find real happiness or real friendships there.

The ayuntamiento held a big whoop-tee-doo this Wednesday evening to light the huge Christmas tree at Plaza Kioto. The problem is, after banning fireworks for all the right reasons during the Día de Guadalupe and all the days leading up to it, they had a massive fireworks display that sent wild and domestic animals into a frenzy and had many of us questioning if there was a shootout going on, because we are a community still traumatized by violence. A damn shame to see their hypocrisy displayed so publicly again. And unfortunately we can expect more of the same on Christmas and New Year's nights.

One is a one-bedroom house with a kitchen, and the other has a ground-floor bungalow and an upstairs cabaña that shares a kitchen with the bungalow. All located amid exuberant tropical gardens across the street from Troncones Beach within easy walking distance of the small village with its stores and restaurants.
