Level 4 travel warning
The US State Department up-dated the travel warning for Zihuatanejo/Ixtapa to a level 4 (Do not travel too). Last year the area was level for for the State of GRO but the local Ziu/Ixtapa was level 2.
Has crime increased since last year?
My family is very concerned that MY wife and I are traveling to Ixtapa for a
6 week stay.
Really -- How dangerous is it now?
Level 4 travel warning
Very dangerous! They have houses and stores and kids and cars. All the trappings of a modern 21st Century post-modern dystopia. They might even have a murderous dictatorship in the future, just like their their big neighbor to the north. Thankfully, that hasn't happened yet.
But in the meantime, if you keep your wits about you and stay reasonably sober and aware of your general surroundings, you should be okay. Oh, by the way, I would recommend not wearing a MAGA tee-shirt.
The politics of warnings
I live here six months of the year. I’m not going to suggest that the Zihuatanejo area is Disneyland, but neither is it Jackson, Miss., with a homicide rate of nearly 78 per 100,000 residents, more than 15 times the national average.
Zihuatanejo de Azueta, another Pacific coast favorite with an active expat community, ranked 41st with 61.3 homicides per 100,000 people.
But remember what these deaths represent. They are internecine killings within and between criminal organizations. If you are not involved in a criminal organization you are not likely to encounter such violence.
Where I live in Canada, I frequently forget to lock my door when I go out. I do the same here. In decades in both places I have never experienced a break in or other theft. I have never witnessed violence occurring in either place.
I would ask the US State Department to explain the reason for the change based on data related to American visitors to the area. Perhaps they are anticipating unfavourable treatment of Americans due to reactions to US activities in Latin America and elsewhere.
I think that most people in the world, including in Mexico, can distinguish between the citizens of a country and the actions of the government of that country.

I frequent las gatas with my family and am grateful we weren’t witness to the murders there a few months ago even if it was a feud between criminals.

I hope not many MAGA folks come to Ixtapa. I hate what is happening in the US. I pray that the stupidity of Trump and his MAGA idiots get knocked down with the mid term
elections in November. If I didn't have family, I would move to another country!
I have many friends from many places in the world including Canada, UK, Spain and Mexico. I just hope we are not judged for by being American. If an election were held today Trump would be out...the majority of Americans are as upset as our friends from
other countries.
The real numbers
Hola, this morning in Acapulco la Presidenta Sheinbaum reported the real numbers of volontary homicides in Guerrero compared to last year… it is in Spanish but easy to understand that the situation is better and not worse than last year.
Level 4 travel warning
If I had to guess, they increased it because the orange turd wants to attack the cartels in Mexico now per his interview the other day. We Americans already have a half painted target on our backs and if he does that it will complete the circle. Sadly those of us who are completely against the orange turd are now lumped into his dirty deeds by default. And with this we cannot live in fear. Go and enjoy what undoubtedly is one of the greatest areas in all of Mexico knowing the people there will take better care of you than our government here treats you. Don’t let the orange turd ruin your plans as there are sunny beaches, delicious freshly caught fish, banana leaf tamales and pozole awaiting your arrival. As Ralph Waldo Emerson once said “ do the thing we fear, and death of fear is certain”…..Salud.

I agree. I think It must be a terrible thing to see someone being killed.
And yet, and yet, I wonder how many millions of views there have been of a masked, government agent shooting dead a 37 year old mother of three with no reported criminal record.

Amazing a question about violence in Zihua somehow goes back to Trump and violence in Minnesota.
Having children and no criminal record does not give you the right to attack law enforcement. A responsible mother should probably be with her children and not attempting to obstruct law enforcement in an event that ended tragically.

Amazing how there is always at least one MAGA cult member who feels the need to parrot the lies and propaganda of the murderous regime of Orange Mussolini.

As best as I can recall, we've had a "Level 4 - Do Not Travel" designation since the days of Bush, Jr. I can only recall two violent deaths in recent years involving U.S. citizens, one who ran a checkpoint in Petatlán at some ungodly hour of the night, and the other a drunk/drugged tourist who spent the evening in a titty bar insulting its owner, who later shot him in a parking lot in Ixtapa. There've been a few car thefts, telephone extortions and house burglaries, some excessive restaurant and bar bills, and some harsh words towards a few U.S. citizens from time to time, but certainly nothing that merits the State Department's absurd travel designation.
You should invite your fearful family members to join you. They would be eternally grateful!
Our presidenta is visiting us today, and she doesn't travel with anything remotely resembling the security detail of the U.S. president. She'll probably walk a few streets and press a lot of flesh while also receiving requests and petitions from citizens.

HOW DARE YOU BLAME THE VICTIM!
That's it! I'm done with you here. From here on NO MAGATS ALLOWED. THIS MESSAGE BOARD IS FROM NOW ON A MAGAT-FREE ZONE! I will no longer tolerate their treasonous insanity. They need to seek professional help for cult deprogramming therapy. My patience with their idiotic allegiance to a TRAITOR, a PEDOPHILE and an INSURRECTIONIST is done.

Over many years I have enjoyed having political discussions with the right wing or Conservative thinkings. But for the last few years I find it is not useful nor enjoyable as these Maga minded people thinkings are cast in stone, most of their response seems to be what ever their dear leader or Fox Entertainment broadcast. Its too bad as the differences should be able to come to a compromised result but not anymore

You have an incorrect assumption and/or information.
There has been a level 4 travel ban in Zihuatanejo/Ixtapa for at least 8 years. by the subjective US government. But time fly's and it is probably more like 12 years.

Yeah, I believe it goes back to the Bush Jr. years. But I could be mistaken. It seems like forever.
Level 4 travel warning
I think that the level 4 warning has been present for the state of Guerrero for a very long time. The resort areas of Ixtapa Zihuatanejo were initially excluded from this. It seems to me that this exception was dropped 5 or so years ago.

In Zihuatanejo cartel gangsters kill other gangsters. In the USA, federal law enforcement agencies kill unarmed moms. Where would you rather be?

But they only kill unarmed moms who say unkind and hurtful things about ICE agents. So that makes it okay.

"It's OK dude. I'm not mad at you," were her last words. Boy, that's gotta sting. "F***ing bitch," were the last words to her from this noble and kind officer.

What is mind boggling to me is most people that ask these questions believe they are safe in the U.S. I am very comfortable walking around Zihua at night to one of our favorite restaurants. When we visit places like San Francisco, Los Angeles, Las Vegas or New Orleans my head is on a constant swivel. Mexico doesn’t kill people for sport.

I agree. I lived in a several cities and several rather lawless places in Florida. Drunk rednecks and car rage crazies were the worst threats. Not poor dark-skinned people even though I frequently worked in public housing projects. The only time I've ever been shot at was by a couple of road rage crazies in Florida.
Mexico has its share of crazy cave men who kill women whom they believe spurn them, and we've enacted feminicidio laws to deal with them. But that's an entirely separate problem. The majority of the numbers that make up our homicide statistics can best be described as mostly gang warfare. Though I still wouldn't say that the old Guerra Sucia is entirely over either. As our presidenta often says when reporters or foreigners ask why she's able to mingle so much with the public: amor con amor se paga. But the converse is also true. Old wars never end entirely.

And precisely because it's come to this, where a clear line of RIGHT vs WRONG - GOOD vs EVIL has been crossed. This is WAY past a simple moral mindfart. I have a primal reaction to such people that makes ME a danger to them. I've worked hard to try to be kind and polite, try to reason, try to be patient, but the line has now been crossed more clearly than ever, especially considering the dictator they've empowered who is currently claiming the world is his. Of course, his useful idiots think he's just kidding, clowning around, owning the libs... until he does what he said he was going to do. Then they cross Rubicon after Rubicon defending the indefensible until we've come to this. He now owns Venezuela as his personal fiefdom, complete with announcing he'll be personally taking charge of the proceeds in an offshore account, and he's threatening other countries who are historically the USA's allies while coddling to Putin, of all people.
You don't ever come back from crossing this Rubicon. This isn't grabbing women by the pussy or raping children, it's savagely raping the entire world.
I draw the line. If you defend this, stay away from me.
MAGA is a mental illness. MAGAts represent a threat to the safety of a peace-loving civil society. They need more mental healthcare than all the USA's addicts of any legal or banned substances combined. They are a social cancer on the USA and humanity, wherever they are.
I do not welcome them, and I will not make them feel welcome here. I don't speak for anyone but myself. I don't represent anyone else's point of view. I don't believe in insisting others think like me, but I don't believe in being phony either and pretending something extremely wrong isn't extremely wrong, that evil isn't evil, that cruelty and evil are acceptable. Fair, no?
There really shouldn't be any questions about this at this point, but if you just gotta, then I'll try to humor you. But I'd rather not waste time on this.
One love.

We're forgetting the 2014 murder (or murder-by-hire) in Zihua of US citizen Al Rak, by Canadian Frank Sheppard, Sheppard's subsequent disappearance, and the shocking release of the men who'd been convicted of the actual killing.
I wonder if karma, or the Grim Reaper, ever caught up with Sheppard. One can hope. And this reminds me that it must be the only time in history that a criminal fled to Canada from Mexico, and not the reverse.
Oh, and I was one of those car theft victims, way back in early 2007.

Good memory. I tried to keep up the pressure on Frank, but Al's wife eventually asked me to stop.
Sorry about your car. The road through La Unión continues being a favorite spot for carjackers. They don't appear to care about anyone's nationality.
