Ditto. Thank you for a great trip report. Sorry to hear how arduous your viajes to and from Zihua were.

Just wanted to remind folks that if you can make your way to San Diego cheaply or easily or both, there are direct flights from the Tijuana airport to Zihuatanejo. No customs at Zihua. There is public transit from the San Diego airport to the Tijuana airport. If you have a ton of luggage, though, it would probably be better to Uber or taxi from the San Diego airport to the Cross Border Express (CBX). Lugging your bags from the airport to the Trolley, across the pedestrian bridge into Tijuana from San Ysidro, and then to the taxi or bus to the airport would be a struggle for some. Both the drive and the CBX would be expensive but the CBX lets you walk across the border and drops you down right into the Tijuana airport. On the way back, you avoid the long pedestrian lines getting back into San Diego.
