Problemas con LicenZIHas Locales
The overnight and early morning temperatures bring little relief from the ongoing heat spell. The water temperature is around 31°C, and it pretty much determines the minimum temperature that we feel along the coast. This Thursday's high was recorded at around 36°C, but with a heat index well over 40°C even this evening after sunset. No good chances of rain until Sunday, Monday and Tuesday when an area of low pressure will pass by our coast dragging along some rainstorms as it forms up. Fortunately, it will move northwestward and away from us, so we'll only get some rain and hopefully no strong winds. But it should kick up some swells reaching over 3 meters expected along our coast by the latter part of the coming week.
If you have a drivers license that was issued in Zihuatanejo, it may not be valid anywhere else but Zihuatanejo. Be sure to check the validity of your locally-issued drivers license before driving anywhere but Zihuatanejo. If you get stopped and it doesn't show up in this registry, you may be detained and/or fined.

The "capricho de la reina" continues at the pier. One of the public projects that was denounced for allegedly being irregular by murdered ecologist and investigative reporter Alex Serna, as was the Capricho del Rey project. Today the ZIHUA letters came down in pieces as did the small religious alcove with the image of the Virgen de Guadalupe that belongs to the local fishermen. And of course the pier continues to remain in darkness at night. The mayor truly has no shame and remains quite careless with expenditures using our taxes.
There continues to be a dearth of visitors around the area. Those at the hotels on the beach in Ixtapa mostly don't leave their hotels. A few were on the beaches today, but most downtown restaurants and shops remained empty most of the day. Everyone's wondering what happened to the summer vacationers. School has been out for most students in Mexico since the beginning of the month.
For a totally relaxing Bed & Breakfast lodging overlooking the remaining jungle in La Ropa, I highly recommend a hidden gem called Casa Arcoíris. The view of the sunset over the treetops from their pool is breathtaking, and the peace and quiet will relieve you of any stress. Five comfortable suites with air conditioning, TV, and Wi-Fi access at this LGBTQ-friendly lodging make it somewhat exclusive and definitely enchanting. Mention ZihuaRob's and get a discount. Shameful
It is absolutely heartbreaking to see this quaint little town I fell in love with over two decades ago reduced to cement. When you mentioned the little alcove being destroyed I broke down in tears. What in the hel* is happening! Have they lost their damn minds! Is it all for money?
I have consistently promoted Zihuatanejo to anyone who is interested in a wonderful, friendly area in Mexico. I have always considered Zihuatanejo a true gem and the best place in Mexico. Tonight I find myself quite concerned with all of the ridiculous tearing apart of our beloved Zihuatanejo.
Long time, annual visitors are not looking for a place covered in cement with all the beautiful trees torn down and that sweet alcove gone. Tonight my heart aches for the dirt roads and cooler temps of days gone by.
Shame on those responsible.

I couldn't agree with you more. Unfortunately, as macho-looking as the fishermen are, they're afraid to speak up. They are totally against what the mayor is doing, of that there's no doubt. But they don't believe it does any good to oppose her or to take a stand against her. And THAT'S a damn shame. But thousands of Alex Serna's followers and others who have read what happened to him and seen his videos ARE speaking up and taking a stand. There was a noteworthy demonstration by reporters in Chilpancingo yesterday at the offices of the Fiscal del Estado, the people who should be investigating Alex's murder. They can't murder us all.
Shameful
I arrived with a friend to Zihua in 1974. We stayed five months in a casita/palapa a staircase up from La Ropa beach.
And a great many adventures were had. Walking to the market as the sun rose...cacophony of roosters crowing, burros braying, and laughter and murmur of conversation.
The memories of our time there although 50 plus years ago remains as vivid as if this morning.
I kept returning to Zihua and la Ropa over the decades...first Ixtapa came. We thought this would be ok as the touristy tourists would go there (never underestimate the hubris of youth! we were adventurers not tourists)
and spare Zihua from high-rises and McDonald's franchises.
But time races ever onward, changes were made of course, happy to see improvements in schools, hospital, jobs etc.
But for a time the charm and magic of the place remained...mostly due to the landscape and of course the delightful and welcoming citizens of Zihua.
Now I am an oldster...I return and feel like a forensic anthropologist following hints and clues to memories of what was and it is getting more difficult with each passing year, as the relentless erosion of the natural landscape continues.
It is puzzling why the powers that be in Zihua don't understand the importance of maintaining history. I've travelled to a great many places in the western world and each place has an "old part" of city or town. Brimming with new neighbourhoods, and changes of the new century yet housed in historical buildings, and environs. Not a museum like environment but thriving, vibrant, working communities.
At least the fishermen on the principal playa, and Elvira's remain bright beacons in the ubiquitous rampage of cement pouring, lighting and vulgarity.
Zihua has provided a healing and soul comforting respite from this angst ridden, chaotic world. Truly heart breaking to see what was a thriving, joyous and energetic earthy power buried under this dark, non energy of greed and carelessness.
I take heart and much hope from the endless ebb and flow of the surf and the return of the sea turtles to lay their eggs as they've done for millennia.
Please understand I am not looking for comments, simply wanted to vent a bit. My apologies for rattling on.
M.
