Ya Viene La PreZIHpitación
After another hot and humid day with storm clouds dancing all around us, another good rain finally arrived to Zihuatanejo this Sunday evening. It looks like we'll be having quite a bit of rain for the next couple of days, at least. In other parts of Mexico including the Costa Grande, there've been torrential rains and strong winds that have caused considerable damage. Hope we don't have to go through anything like that. Unfortunately, with all the deforestation and so many new roads on the hillsides that lack proper pluvial drainage, our downtown streets tend to flood quicker than ever. What used to take days or even weeks to flood now does so in less than an hour. The canal "La Boquita" is in terrible condition, and the laguna Las Salinas lacks dredging as well as access points for water to drain into it. It's also concerning that the entrance to the lagoon is being modified and narrowed allegedly without any Environmental Impact Study, a requirement according to the law that our municipal authorities apparently omit repeatedly, according to investigations by the recently murdered environmentalist Alex Serna.
I'm also concerned that I haven't seen any sea turtle nests or tracks on Playa Principal or La Madera this summer. Checking my old photos from this time of year, they should be arriving. I suspect the bright lights are affecting them, something I and others continue to point out in vain to our local authorities who say one thing then do another.
World Cup fever is fading, but like many others here I still find myself trying to watch the remaining matches. FIFA's officiating has left a lot to be desired, and I can't help but think that all the permitted betting could be ruining the sport. It seems some teams win more by acting than through actual sportsmanship.
Apparently the huge swells that were predicted to hit our coast this week aren't coming after all. Today's forecast shows wave height decreasing through the week and remaining around a meter and a half, though I suspect we'll get some kickback from the storm currently forming out to sea off our coast and moving away from us.
One of our region's truly lovely vacation lodgings is Casa La Paloma, a place that will take your breath away and leave you wanting to stay longer than you planned. This beachfront vacation home is located on a quiet, sandy stretch of Playa Troncones. Sleeping capacity is 12 in 6 bedrooms. Enjoy the poolside bar and large gourmet kitchen, as well as the oceanfront palapas with hammocks and lounge chairs. Peaceful and relaxing. (click to enlarge photo)
